Man...he's good or damn that Gerard!
  • He found me out, not sure if he's a computer genius or if I'm as really stupid as he points out. Actually it was a tipster so I guess I shouldn't give him too much credit.  Instead of leaving snarky and arguementative comments on other mp3 blogs (see here) I decided to just do an anonymous online critical mp3 blog diary.  I had no grand plans or lofty intentions it was just for me to air my thoughts.  Gerard points out it was not funny which is true because I'm not that funny and I wasn't writing it to be funny. I could have just put my name up as I wasn't ever going to write anything inflammatory but decided not to (ironically in grand Gerard Vs. Bear fashion).  In fact Dodge was the first commenter and in typical zen like fashion said he appreciated the discussion but that I was wrong.

Gerard thinks he made some great discovery but it's not like I'm ashamed of anything I wrote. In fact it's all stuff I've said before elsewhere (ususally here). So I'll put my name on it and continue it if I want.

So can someone please find out who Gerard is.  I'll put up a reward. All my extra promo cds plus the one free long sleeved sweatshirt I got in the mail from some label (but not my orange Ashtmatic Kitty shirt, that I'm keeping).
  • No matter how low there's always further to go!
  • Well, Gerard is going to run out of NYC bloggers to poke fun of soon. I mean the guy seems to know half of Brooklyn.  ...

Come on NYC bloggers, couldn't be that hard. I mean the guy was in CMJ running around taking pictures. Somebody could have known what boxer he wears and have him tied in empty warehouse in meat district somewhere by now.

anonymizer if your friends peps, don't let me have another 'I told you so' moment.
  • why do so many people here seem to think having ads is automatically "whoring out"? So long as you have the integrity and wisdom to separate editorial and advertising, it's not a big deal. <-granted, now that I think about it for more than a second, that can look sketchy where you're a one-person operation, depending on whether your advertisers and subjects are one in the same. (still, it doesn't lead to a slippery slope to britney spears, nor does everyone writing about her do it *to* get ads)

anyway, gerard...love the guy (or girl). "game talk more shoe than woman." And, yeah, good for gerard for demanding something better than "Making the Bland" from the music press.

he/she ain't any of the more common guesses I've heard (nick sylvester, matthew perpetua, chris ott, me, william bowers). I also don't think it's the same person who did Shins Could Change Your Life-- doesn't strike me as that person's style. I'm 99.9% sure it's not anyone from P4k.

I do think it's a New Yorker and based on his concerns and work, it's almost certainly a writer/critic/blogger-- not someone on the label/pr/artist side of music.
  • How awesome would it be if Ott ran one of these things? Pretty awesome.

I guess I'll have to keep reading his posts on hipinion in the meantime.

  • Ott is doing that! It's his Blogwash column in the Voice, but it basically started the same time as and was overshadowed by Gerard. (I'd guess that Ott would never, ever do anything anonymously.)

He also does Shallow Rewards, of course.
  • (I'd guess that Ott would never, ever do anything anonymously.)

    10000% agreed.
  • Gerard is wildly entertaining, but I have to say I am against anonymous posting in any form, either on a blog or in comments. (I have to admit though, I forget that Gerard is anonymous because he/she has created such a strong personality online.) Someday, I'm sure, Gerard's facade is going to crack. I'd love to have a couple beers with him, particularly in full-on Triumph the insult comic dog mode.

As Craig discovered it's easy to throw rocks from behind a mask, but a drag to be found out. There's just too much mean-spirited and anonymous venom on the internet. People should have the guts to say what they mean without hiding from the consequences.
  • Anyone who would think that it's me doesn't know me very well at all! I'm nothing if not a person who would want full credit for any critique that I wrote -- I'm not big on anonymity.
  • I missed that...did someone accuse you of being Gerard? (Personally, I would find that HIGHLY unlikely)
  • (wait, just reread some of Scott's gossipped guesses)
  • I've heard a few times, it's always like "Gerard says nothing I wouldn't say in public given the inclination!"

Ha, you've never actually been to NYC, have you Squashed?

i read his anti-Pipettes article and gave up.

  • Oh that's too bad. You missed out on his completely asinine broadside against the Knife (whose live show he did not see, and with whose music he is quite obviously barely familiar) in his column about the Decemberists. However,  it is definitely nice that Chris has been able to find a way to make some money out of being a bitter contrarian.
  • you should see his message boarding. dude is vehement.

    i hate the knife too.

  • Oh, the people at hipinion are always so charming. I can just imagine.
  • i think it's gorilla vs bear chris.
  • you're kidding, right?

yeah, it's me. i started a blog to rip on a bunch of my friends, and i thought it would be funny to use an almost identical name as my real blog. that's some quick thinking, sherlock. i can assure you that the dude who runs Gerard is much funnier than I am.

  • I bet it's Everybody Likes Chad, him being above suspicion and all ;)

  • Don't get so hung up on Gerard guys it's getting a bit silly looking from this side of the water... Tell me I'm wrong if ya want but Christ stop the guessing. You're just fueling his fire..

Back to the music ...I just saw Diplo DJing in the Guinness Factory .. it was AWESOME.. Any Dooooob???  :)

  • hey, I spent a good five minutes photoshopping this.  You're damn right I'm getting some mileage out of it.
  • Science damn you!
  • i just hate you guys so much and youre all a bunch of jerks
  • no offense, yknow
  • none taken :)

  • I bet it's Merz. Seriously.
  • how many bloggers could gerard rationally be in terms of reality?  like, maybe four or five people maximum.
  • 1

worrying about gerard's real identity is really very interesti..ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

  • yeah dancing with the stars is much more interesting craigy
  • gerard (conceptually) works because you're all so damn narcissistic.  and, i mean that in as nice and understanding way as possible.  he's become the Ashton Kutcher of mp3 bloggers.
  • I'm much more entertained reading everyone's reactions about gerard than reading gerard him/herself

  • i enjoy seeing the way people type when making comments on Gerard's site. as if their adopting of Gerardese is going to actually amuse someone or make them seem to fit in more. it's very similar to seeing American tourists trying to adopt British phrases and lingo when vacationing in London.
  • Gerard was so clever to adopt his own manner of speaking and language.  Maybe I'll try that.
  • WHAT UP THE FUCK
  • he speaks like that in real life too.

    ...so they say

of course i was joking!  i guess it didn't come through in the post...sorry.

  • no problem, i was just making sure.

speaking of gerard, he was nominated over at the Plug Awards for "Music Blog of the Year," along with some deserving actual "music blogs" like Music For Robots, BV, Fluxblog, Stereogum, LHB, MOKB, YANP, etc., as well as some not so deserving ones (gorilla vs. bear, Idolator). YAYGERARD!

    http://www.plugawards.com/general_vote.php

  • i voted for gerard. sorry guys.
  • I nominated Gerard - sorry! (I also nominated four of you all.) (well, five if gerard walks among you on this mssg board.)
  • That list is so rounded, it makes me itchy to post something extremely odd. heh..

    ------

Hey, anybody notice there is no mp3 blog award? ....

come on, picking the best mp3 blog will at least result in one 4 page long elbo. thread.
  • Toolshed nominated Gerard too ;-) as well as four others
  • wow. well then let me be the first to say that I definitely don't think Gerard should've been nominated.
  • I guess it depends how seriously you take awards.
  • who gets to do the nominations for the PLUG awards?
  • the advisory board:

    www.plugawards.com/authors/ABList.php

everyone got to submit up to five picks for each category.
  • Seems to me like it should be only limited to people who don't fit in that particular category.  Music websites voting for music websites?  Bloggers voting for bloggers?  Music labels voting for artists? Basically everyone who's on that board got nominated, whether directly or in-directly. I'm not saying that they nominated themselves (though, let's be serious, I'm sure a couple of 'em did), but still... let's get rid of the in-breeding.

Anyhow, I kind of hope that Gerard wins. Most of the other nominees are pretty typical. I'd like to see it go to a dark horse.

Then again, it's just the PLUG Awards. The only other time I've ever payed any attention to the PLUG Awards was when I went for free through my campus paper and saw Saul Williams and TV On The Radio. Man, that was awesome.
  • i really hope that gerard wins too. it's not that i don't like any of you at all, but i too like to see the underdog win and that would be great. (this coming from a perennial underdog in her blogging days. yes.) i don't give a fuck if he's made fun of me or made fun of anyone else, but he's more original than a lot of blogs that are nominated.
  • incest is best when it comes to the "butt" plug nominations
  • guys i just went to make a sandwich and the bread was moldy.

and then my dog mollie ate it out of the trashcan.

i'm guessing she'll throw it up later.  and then probably lay all over my folded clothes on my bed.
