Jam-uary
  • okay january's over, what are your jams, blog-people.  here's the stuff that's stuck to me like finished spaghetti (in no particular order, and most of which isn't like really released yet)

Titus Andronicus The Airing of Grievances (self-released)

    Goldfrapp Seventh Tree (Mute)

    Ssion Fool’s Gold (Sleazetone)

Atlas Sound Let the Blind Lead Those Who Can See But Cannot Feel (Kranky)

Flowers Forever Flowers Forever (Team Love)

    Sebastian Tellier Sexuality (Record Makers)

Black Mountain In the Future (Jagjaguwar)

White Hinterland Phylactery Factory (Dead Oceans)

    Mahjonng Kontpab (K)

    Fuck Buttons Street Horrsing (ATP/R)

    Vampire Weekend Vampire Weekend (XL)

    Clark Turning Dragon (Warp)

    Apes & Androids Blood Moon

    Destroyer Trouble in Dreams (Merge)

Realistic Perpetual Memory Loss (Illegal Art)

    Killer Mike Ghetto Extraordinary (self-released)
  • I really liked the Black Mountain and Drive-By Truckers (surprisingly so) albums

Gonna have to dive into some of those on your list here this month
  • Cheers for the list Eric, the Tellier and Fuck Buttons is playing well so far
  • Grand Pocket Orchestra - Odd Socks EP

Blackball False, Truth! - I Prefer Hello
  • jacqueline taieb - 7 heures du matin

neil young - time fades away (particularly 'dont be denied')

    pants yell! - alison statton

that's basically all i've been listening to here lately. winter gets me a bit obsessive over certain songs or albums..
  • Fuck Buttons

    Black Mountain

    Magnetic Fields

    Atlas Sound

Still on the fence about the new Goldfrapp

Need to hear the new Clark record
  • my listening pile:

beat pyramid - these new puritans (domino)

alegranza - el guincho (discoteca océano)

    dead knowledge - moviola (catbird)

    red album - baroness (relapse)

totally flossed out ep - the cool kids (c.a.k.e)

you can see i'm somewhat out of phase with new stuff.  the new long blondes and breeders records are pretty good, too, but you know.....
  • I think the new Goldfrapp sounds a bit like Texas.  I like The Dodos, although they can get a bit much at times.

Also Sara Lowes and Gerry Mitchell & Little Sparta
  • That new Mars Volta is pretty good.

Life Long Tragedy- Runaways is probably the best record in hardcore right now and will probably be in my top list for 2008.

I really dug beat pyramid. I think an elbo.ws blogger introduced me to them but I can't remember.

A+ on the Baroness record, they seem to be pretty versatile.

Bob Moulds new record is pretty good and streaming on his myspace. But there is a vocoder and the forbidden drumbeat on one track. You know the forbidden drumbeat, un tiss un tiss un tiss un tisss... I am so over that drum beat.
  • Destroyer

    Malkmus

Is this as good as the single? because this is totally in AOTY consideration if so

Crushed Stars <-- get on this, dudes

I just went to go listen to them on myspace and noticed they have less that 500 friends. I thought every band had 85690213509317509 friends.

  • people don't appreciate bands that sound like the clientele or quiet yo la tengo, i guess
  • I think it has to more with them not having a copy of this...

  • The Radar Bros., Auditorium

    Vampire Weekend, self-titled

The Helio Sequence, Keep Your Eyes Ahead

    Still digesting:

    Black Mountain, In the Future

    The Mountain Goats, Heretic Pride

    Anxiously awaiting:

    Cadence Weapon, Afterparty Babies
  • i like the new Tellier more than i thought i would. also: White Denim's debut LP, Destroyer, White Hinterland, about half of Hercules & Love Affair's self-titled LP, and still way into the new Beach House.

Eric, is that "lost" Killer Mike thing worth downloading?
  • British Sea Power

    The Mountain Goats

    Evangelicals

    Vampire Weekend

    Hot Chip

    The Raveonettes

    Headlights

    Okay

    Magnetic Fields

  • "Do You Like Rock Music?" British Sea Power

    "Dummy" Portishead

"The Wishes and the Glitch" Say Hi

"Bedlam in Goliath" The Mars Volta

    "In Rainbows (disc 2)" Radiohead

Haven't been on a huge album kick lately.  I've recently discovered the quality shuffling of playing your entire library in Alphabetical order by song title.  I don't think I've had the same artist come up two songs in a row yet (and I'm in the D's)
  • edit: "We Got it For Cheap Vol. 3"
  • The Ghetto Extraordinary album is great.  Definitely worth downloading.

Did a short January roundup thing last week:

    http://rockitforme.blogspot.com/2008/01/stuff-to-check-out-january-albums-etc.html

Afterparty Babies is amazing as well.  It's got some just totally jaw-dropping tracks.  Been holding off on posting since it's not out till March.

in short, no.  there are a few songs better than the single ("Art Deco House," "Lindberghs & Metal Birds"), but there's also a lot of twirling little girl music-box frillery that i could do without.

Eric, is that "lost" Killer Mike thing worth downloading?

it's pretty awesome after a few listens.  he's got that ice cube-level intensity that i find pretty invigorating.

yeah, this is also a pleasant surprise, esp. the lead track.

Posted by: SongbyToadI think the new Goldfrapp sounds a bit like Texas.  I like The Dodos, although they can get a bit much at times.

this could be true re: Goldfrapp, but i'm not too familiar with Texas.  it's hard for me to get toooooo nuts rec'ing that album to friends because OMG it's not as instantly wondrous as felt mountain or even black cherry, but i don't really like the debut anyway.  this new one more reminds me of Siobhan Donaghy's Ghosts, which i really liked from last year (so did Maura Idolator w00t).

the dodos are 50/50 with me; they sound a bit like my two least favorite XTC records: Big Express and Mummer

  • Definitely Black Mountain and Vampire Weekend. Digging Thao Nguyen, as well, and I like that Kate Nash record a lot more than I thought I would.

Destroyer isn't grabbing me as much as I'd hope, which is weird considering I'm in love with 99.9999% of what Dan Bejar even breathes in the direction of. It's just not as ridiculous to me as Rubies, and I like him when he's sounding batshit insane. But I've only listened to it once or twice, so I'm hoping to have changed my mind by the time it's officially out.
  • magnetic fields, stephen malkmus, vampire weekend, no kids, beach house, bob mould!
  • For me, it's been

    Dawn Landes - Fireproof

    Thao - Bee Stings

    Firefox AK

new one?  what's this one called?

  • here is my January compilation (70MB .RAR file included):

    http://obscuresound.com/?p=1730
  • new Firefox AK single = Winter rose (ft. Tiger Lou)

CDS includes 4 remixes and an instrumental version. I'm running a contest tomorrow to give away a copy and will have a few for resale too (hopefully by the end of the week). New album "If I were a melody" is out Feb 27. Haven't heard it yet, but supposedly I have a copy on the way.
  • The big four:

    Black Mountain (obviously)

    Times New Viking

    Vampire Weekend

Unsparing Sea (mentioned this band in another thread earlier in the month.  Rec'd for fans of ambitious nautical folk and NMH)

Then, there was the Brit Box.  The christmas gift that kept giving during the month of Jan.  That led to lots of Suede, Verve, and Stone Roses.

I also enjoyed the album by Thao, but as far as the woman folk goes, I think I like the new one by Scary Mansion better.

Lastly, I listened to the new Dead Meadow, lots, but I haven't formed a strong opinion on it.  Do I like it just cause I listen to lots of stoner/psych rock, or does it excel outside of its genre?
  • As an aside, who wins in the battle of the f*ck bands?  Holy F*ck, F*ck Buttons, or F*cked Up?  I still haven't heard the new F*ck Buttons outside of what I've snagged on HM, but the other F*ck bands have been releasing some killer tunes of late, too.
  • fuck bands are the new bear bands, which were the new wolf bands last year . . .

Woah, I just decided to try that out. Not bad...! My last four:

    The National - Abel

The Magnetic Fields - Abigail, Belle of Kilronan

    Vetiver - Arboretum

    Nirvana - About a Girl
  • Another great playlist I've put together is the Top 11 Albums of 2007 and the Top 11 Albums of 2006 together on one.  It's basically my 22 favorite albums of the past 2 years, and it's fucking stellar.  Plus, we all have handy lists to refer to :-D

I think I might do the same for my top songs of both years, that would be a pretty rock solid block of tunes...

  • The Airfields - Up All Night

    Star - Devastator

    Crushed Stars - Gossamer Days

Moscow Olympics - Still 7" (over and over and over and over and over and over....)

    Les Calamites - Les Calamites

The Brilliant Corners - BBC Sessions

Panda Riot - She Dares All Things

The Morning Paper - Making You Up EP

Cyndi Lauper - She's So Unusual

    Would-Be-Goods - Mondo

Not too much new new things to be interested in right now aside from

The Airfields, Crushed Stars, Moscow Olympics, and Panda Riot

This year will be good though

good things are on the way
  • oh and i forgot The Raveonettes

Lust Lust Lust is the bee's fucking knees
  • oh and everyone should listening to The Deirdres, too

    do that
  • i'm gonna go watch pete&pete now
  • I forgot Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin - Pershing

and the new Constantines album, which is just staggering
