What songs are you currently obsessed with?
  • yep.  great album.
  • yeah very delicate and elegant. The mix of style is odd too, west africa vs. latin. I am going to make a list...
  • Hey LA people...anybody knows anything about "Castledoor"? they have scattered mp3 online, kinda blurry do it yourself recording, but big strong melody. Are they any good in real life?
  • Kay Kay and his Weathered Underground are my official new obsession.  Listen to a couple of tracks here, the entire album is brilliant a la XTC, The Beatles, Jon Brion.

Do they have a full length now?  Last I checked they only had a Cassette Tape!

Hey Momma was my #1 song last year, so much fun!

Their full length is due in March.  Don't know who's putting out the CD, but there are details on the vinyl at the above link.  The album is truly, truly phenomenal.

  • I saw the vinyl link in your post. While I love vinyl, I also love having some form of it that I can listen to at work and elsewhere.

Could you send me an email? thabombshelter at gmail

  • check yr email mayne
  • I finally got The Avett Brother's Emotionalism and Ben Harper's Lifeline. Love 'em both.
  • bon iver--"blindsided" cannot stop playing it!
  • Molly Shannon, Molly Shannon - Nichelle Nichols

    What an album too.
  • my last.fm profile shows that i've listened to leonard cohen's 'songs from a room' an embarrassing number of times here lately. that might just be the weather.

this pants yell disc is still the best record of '07, though..
  • songs from a room?  an embarrassing number of times?  not possible.

  • i don't know - i've gotten to the point where I actually like the constant jaw-harping in the background.. and I spent saturday arranging 'the partisan' for ukulele and banjo. i think a line was crossed somewhere..
  • "last wish" by munck//johnson

it's eerily beautiful and so sad . . . hits the spot.
  • The Partisan may be one of the best songs that humankind has ever produced.  If anyone has ever written anything more casually heartbreaking I have yet to hear it.

     :)

i've been listening to a lot of dave deporis' stuff lately. and dept of eagles. they're so damn good.

  • Who sings the Partisan, Matthew?
  • "this sultry day" by hearts on fire
  • That Retribution Gospel Choir record is a really nice surprise.  I guess I was expecting something more akin to Sparhawk's solo CD, for some reason.  But it's just good rock.

And whenever Emmy the Great lets a new song slip it winds up as compulsive listening.  So: "24" and "We Almost Had a Baby."  Happy she'll be stopping by town on her way to SXSW.

  • "the world doesn't spin on us" by the aluminum group.
  • Posted by: Harry_ThaBombShelterWho sings the Partisan, Matthew?

Harry, I think it's a traditional one, but the version I am talking about is Leonard Cohen.  I'll email it to you.

  • This song called "Feet To The Fire" by John Elliott .  He is by far one of the best emerging songwriters I have heard in a very long time.
  • "When Water Comes to Life," Cloud Cult.

And yes, there are a good half-dozen things about the song that should have me pulling my hair out.  But by the time he sings "water-water-water" I'm just totally lost in it.

  • Loving Sun Down by Nik Freitas (Paul Simonish) & Get On Board by Eric Bibb (blues).
  • The song "Hands to Water" by Rachel Ries.  This song is so beautiful it brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it.  RIYL Andrew Bird, Antony and the Johnsons, Elliott Smith, Joanna Newsom, etc. etc. etc.

     now this is promising stuff.

  • Now You Are Pregnant by The Wave Pictures. "And I don't have any bad memories just bitter regrets"

And pretty much anything by The Indelicates, but particularly Point Me to the West, which is a b-side to Julia, We Don't Live in the Sixties.
  • Thee Oh Sees - "Block of Ice"/"Two Drummers Disappear"

    Whole Effin Erykah Badu Album

    BYOP "Black Hole" 10,000x/day.

  • I'm going nuts over that Soulwax remix of The Rolling Stones at the moment.
  • "Seeing Stars" by Meg Hutchinson.  I don't know how people don't know about her -- it's hard to describe how moving her songs are without sounding contrite.

RIYL: Natalie Merchant, Aimee Mann, Patty Griffin, Shawn Colvin, Anais Mitchell

"Look real close/You might see scars, but me/yeah me, I'm only seeing stars."
  • "Trem Two" by Mission of Burma from the new Vs reissue.
  • the entire devotchka album, a mad and faithful telling, is on constant repeat.
  • Posted by: mjrcthe entire devotchka album, a mad and faithful telling, is on constant repeat.

Hell yes, this is so good.

  • Grail - Soft Temple (Burning Off Impurities)

sort of gothic psych rock, but not too scary. It's perfect kitschy serious music. lol
  • i can't stop listening to "blind" by hercules and love affair--antony is amazing!
  • The Son Lux album.
  • Best track of the month sorted. Probably.

    Cats in Paris - Foxes

Dystopic, spirraling, and about as close as “hardcore/ experimental/ folk” could get to indie-pop. No teasing: the drums ride up front, whilst electronics and bleeps keep everyone awake all through the night. Foxes has chapters you race through, fluidity that unsettles you, a rhythmic anger powered through the proper channels and god-damned interestingness (an elusive beast).

  • "Atlanta" by the French Kicks--it went straight into my Favorites of 2008 folder.
  • Local H, "Hand to Mouth."

I need this album to leak, like, now.

why don't you just interview them and then maybe they'll give you a copy? you are their number one fan! ;-) seriously, though, you should.

I don't want to get all faux-journo on them.  I just want the tooooooooooonz.

They're also (supposedly) playing the annual Joey Ramone Birthday Bash this year, which is a curse and a blessing.

  • then you're just going to have to wait like the rest of us! ;-)

I went through a big Mission of Burma reissue week or two as well.  Now I'm on to the new Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin.  I thought I was going to hate it for being too cute after a good month on the likes of MoB and Th' Faith Healers (which may have biased me against the new Kathleen Edwards a bit), but this is good cute stuff.
  • Jeremy Enigk - World Waits

Saul Williams - Black History Month

    Man Man - Rabbit Habits

    Portishead - Machine Gun

Notwist - Where in This World

  • Local H, "The One with 'Kid.'"  Holy mother.

WHERE'S ALL MY KYUSS RECORDS?  YOU NEVER LIKED THEM TIL YOU MET ME.

  • I still can't fucking stop listening to Pershing after nearly 5 weeks of total stereo domination.

Also, American Analog Set's Promise of Love, new sun kil moon, and the casey dienel record.
