Link exchange anyone? Puhhleeaze?
  • I feel weird starting a new topic but I've been e-mailing bloggers one by one asking to swap links and I've gotten a bit tired though I did have some pretty good success. I noticed a link exchange topic has been done before but I figure it's easier to manage by starting a new one.

I guess some bloggers want more established blogs and I've been music blogging since October, page rank of 3, and modest traffic of 25K pages views the last two months.

I'm pretty open with link exchanging with any blogger who just updates often (I love visiting sites on my blogroll), traffic not a requirement (I understand the pain).

    So anyone interested?

Edit: because I'm dumb enough not to include  link to my blog: http://music.allansworld.info
  • OK.  You asked for it.  I'll put a link up on Six Songs:  http://sixsongs.blogspot.com/

I am new at the blogging game and have NO IDEA about how popular music blogs get.  Will someone please enlighten me.  How many page views per day do the popular mp3 blogs get?  What kind of numbers does an average mp3 blog get on an average day?  When is a blog doing a good job getting viewers?

The best day we had so far, in a month of doing this, is 400 page views.  We usually get about 100 per day, but we are brand new.  Not on Hype Machine yet, etc.

  • I think the best way to get links is to link to blogs in your sidebar. and then link them inline in your posts.  I've got a few links in the blogosphere, some from friends, some from other bloggers, but I've never ASKED for a link.  I don't know why, I think that the unsolicited links are more sincere, you know?  I would rather someone add me because they liked my blog or they read it or whatever, not because we're just trading off.  I know the only blogs I have in my sidebar are blogs I read regularly.  I think of it as an endorsement to my readers who click through to them from ThaBombShelter, I'm giving my stamp of approval that these blogs are great, so great I took the time to put the html code in my template.

You do make a great point. I have gotten a few links from people genuinely adding them to their sidebar on their own. That process is slow and I'm impatient. I actually keep up with more blogs after adding them to my site it's my personal bookmarking. I do add mp3 blogs I do like but I only read 2 everyday before starting my own.

Getting people who randomly add my sidebar + getting readers who may find me off another person's blogroll is twice as nice.

Where did you find that Apartment Story cover by the New Division?

Just curious ... that's an amazing song by the National, and I'm surprised someone already has covered it.

  • I don't remember actually. Somewhere on hype. The only site that has it is : http://www.pandamagazine.se/?p=360  so I guess that's where I must've gotten it.
  • is the purpose of link exhanges just to increase traffic?  the effect of sidebar links on traffic seems so small as to be irrelevant.  unless you're link exchanging with stereogum or kanye west's blog, i don't see the point.  you could spend the time creating another post for your blog and probably increase your traffic more.  of course, if you're swapping links for more altruistic or friendly reasons then that's a different story.
  • In my opinion, if links are used properly, they are a good way to develop loyal readers.  When I discover a new blog, I like to check the links too, to see if there are more treasure to be found.  If somebody is linking to my blog from a blog with a similar focus/attitude, there is a good chance that the person following the link will stick around for awhile.

I agree that you get more traffic from the Hype Machine, but my guess is that the readers who find you through links from similar blogs are more likely to become regulars.  Also, some links do generate a pretty good amount of traffic.

I'm also a big fan of promoting good posts on other friendly blogs and creating good will that way.  Instead of just doing a link, I would suggest using your sidebar area or your own posts to draw attention to specific good things you have enjoyed elsewhere.

Well there are other reasons such as increasing the amount of links to the site and possibly increasing something like page rank (financially this is good). Link exchanging with blogs, is probably one thing I haven't really tapped into when it comes to getting people to my website. I want to maximize all ways of receiving traffic and interconnecting with other blogs has been a weakness. (I have to thank you for linking to me before and for sending me the Dengue Fever album).

I do add blogs to my sidebar that haven't linked back to me but they're blogs that I read on occasion. Otherwise I link a lot to other bloggers that got me into an artist or mp3. It doesn't always work well but out of the goodwill of helping smaller blogs I like doing it occasionally. I've had very little response when I've linked to blogs (big and small) but I'll continue to do so. What's wrong with doing a lit bit of everything though? Some pure link exchanges and linking to blogs I dig. Doing one solely has never worked out.

Figured it would be worth a shot creating a thread.
  • I am 99% sure you are already on mine, but reciprocation would be marvelous.

    I just checked, you are:)

  • Already had you on my list.
  • I do enjoy a tasty link or 3, I'd rather have someone find my blog and hate it, than not find it at all--usually the former.

My system is: Link to stuff I like, and if I get a link back (usually without provocation) I'll bump their link into the top "TYVM" section--it's a slow process. I happily add links without ever expecting one in return, but then I have a links-page rather than sidebar links--eventually I'll write a short description for each link--which probably reduces click-throughs.

I always try to thank whoever links to Lambprey from a post via email, and in some cases I'll add them to my links-page.

@chengy, you reminded me to do my monthly links update and I was planning on adding yours anyway; any blog that posts Tool - Schism MP3 + video gets a permanent residence on my linky links.

@harry, http://2008.sxsw.com/music/showcases/band/69705.html (unedited version of flocks 3) was gunna post it in your comments, but I'm feeling lazy.
  • Your layout is freaking sexy.

Someday I'll make a really good one for mine, but until then I'm stuck with my nooby one.

I like your blog, you've been added.

Wow that post seems old. Good thing you enjoyed my friend's contributions.

I like your blog, you've been added.

I can't take credit for designing my layout. The layout was originally in Italian and just added some "touches" on it. Good thing the theme isn't used as much.

I added you guys both, thanks a ton!

  • Thanks for that link, ML.  Much appreciated
  • Is there anyone else interested?

Agreed. Dunno why, but I've always felt this way.

  • I don't see anything wrong with "asking for a link."  There are so many blogs out there these days that it is just a way to introduce yourself to another blogger, as in:  "Hey check out my blog that your readers might like."  Just good old fashioned promotion.
