The 500 Best Songs of the Decade (00 - 09)
  • A few more which I love and still haven't seen mentioned:

    391. The Go! Team - Ladyflash

    392. Thieves Like Us - Drugs in my Body

    393. Isolee - Schrapnell

    394. Sebastien Tellier - La ritournelle

    395. Doves - There Goes the Fear

ps: I've only heard the John Mayer song out of those ones you mentioned, are the rest truly that awful?
  • Yes. Truly. I actually think Mayer's tune is the best of the lot. That should give you a pretty good indication!

I think the Merril Bainbridge tune is the worst.

    Some highlights...

I took my time to look around
In love and all the places I have been
    I pushed and stumbled in,
    But I was late,
Still God told me to wait
And if I throw a pile of magic beans
Lets hope that I don't sneeze

    But if you're lonely,
Kiss the boys and make them cry
It only, hurts you for a little while
    And we'll keep, turning,
    Turning round the sun,
And all the days roll into one.

    Georgie Porgie pudding and pie
Kiss the boys and make them cry
When the boys came out to play
    Georgie Porgie ran away
    Georgie Porgie ran away

  • No, they aren't.
  • I was really amused by the thought of 'The Babyshambles', for some reason. I don't know why.
  • Posted by: Sean RI was really amused by the thought of 'The Babyshambles', for some reason. I don't know why.

ALL CAPS and excessive quotation mark usage cannot be far behind.

    444. Interpol - Not Even Jail
    445. LCD Soundsystem - All My Friends

Not really well thought out tbh. Only 443 and 445 would definitely make it in my top 5 from 00-09 but oh well, too much fb music in the 00's
  • @foreignthoughts - hard to keep track of this far in, but i think a few of those are already listed.

    http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=pakuNoTgXIIBawvZ5Mnofcw
  • looks like the spreadsheet has fallen behind but i have some free time tonight and i'll update it
  • Yeah, sorry about that. I thought 'All My Friends' must be listed :P Best track of the '00s imo.

It's just 'All My Friends' according to the spreadsheet so I'll replace that with Bon Iver - Blood Bank. :D
  • Well, the big idea was to fill the list first. then prune, improve, rebalance. Get loud about every single revision (haa haa)   each subsequent revision would be better than the one before....

    but.. you know...lazzzyyyyy
  • oh you mean we get to debate the spread? hmmm now this is getting interesting!
  • yeah...what fun is a list without the brawl? haa haa...

(don't forget to fill in the album and "year")  I bet the decadal distribution will be very odd too.
  • ahhh, i thought the point was NOT to dissect the choices. don't we all argue enough? ;)
  • though this list is clearly top heavy with sean r/moka selections.
  • @squashed - i'm trying to fill in all the missing album/year info at this very moment
  • Okay, I've done what I can with album info/year. Maybe someone else could take a look and fill in the blanks? Also, the sort functions do not seem to include all the new listings.
  • Yea, ill fix the other pages, they were temporary and easy to regenerate.
  • Instead of fixing it I made a google site that has the spreadsheet embedded and has sorting capabilities that doesent affect the spreadsheet.

    http://sites.google.com/site/500bestsongs/
  • Very nice Bryon! Thanks for taking the time to do that.

that sort function is very useful.

it's surprising how relatively evenly distributed the songs are by year.  other than 2009 . . .

    2000 - 35

    2001 - 50

    2002 - 43

    2003 - 44

    2004 - 46

    2005 - 54

    2006 - 42

    2007 - 49

    2008 - 31

    2009 - 9

  • I figured 2009 would be thin. Interesting that the highest # is 2005 (approx the middle of the decade).
  • 446. Stars - Your Ex-Lover is Dead (Set Yourself on Fire)

    447. The Cinematic Orchestra - To Build A Home (ft. Patrick Watson) (Ma Fleur)

    448. Frightened Rabbit - Keep Yourself Warm (The Midnight Organ Fight)

    449. Phoenix - Lisztomania (Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix)

    450. The Mountain Goats - No Children (Tallahassee)
  • 451. J. Tillman / Casualties / Long May You Run, J. Tillman (2006)
    452. Elephant Micah / Imperial Blues / Exiled Magicians (2008)
    453. My Morning Jacket / They Ran (Acoustic) / Heartbreakin' Man (2004)
    454. Songs: Ohia / Didn't It Rain / Didn't It Rain (2002)
    455. Damien Jurado / Flowers in the Yard / Four Songs EP (2001)

In no order - and the numbers are not matching up on the spreadsheet as mine are numbered 428-432 and Lee who posted right above me is (currently) listed at 423-427.....hopefully I didn't break it!!
  • yeah the numbers don't match, it said to just follow the elbows thread for numbers so as not to confuse even more. (even though it's confusing anyway...ha)
  • i think it's because a lot of the original picks were doubles (i had a few myself). and a few people picked songs that were pre-2000. so our numbers a little off.
  • So far our list kicks the crap out of that Pitchfork list.

We should get this up to 500, prune it back down, fill in the gaps, and actually post it somewhere.  And have everyone who included songs put up a post about them on their own blog and link to the communal one.

I nominate someone who has actual web design skills to create a central location that we all can link to.

Ideally, we'd get enough entries to avoid having to include 30-40 tracks from some people.  Make it 5 or 10 per blogger.
  • good idea.  i'll add some more this week.
  • currently fixing the list order, using this thread as the master
  • okay.  it is all fixed!

the problem started back on pg 3 beginning with Christina Aguilera - Beautiful.  none of J HoaS' entries on that post were entered in the spreadsheet, and the same with Mollov's following post.  i entered the artists and tracks, but the album info still needs to be entered.

also Sean R's Death Cab For Cutie - Champagne From A Paper Cup was missing from the spreadsheet, and now requires album info.

what is the verdict on albums released in 1999, with the single being released in 2000?  yay or nay?

    ****

    456. Lupe Fiasco - Kick, Push

    457. The Thermals - A Pillar of Salt

    458. Deerhunter - Nothing Ever Happened

    459. Roisin Murphy - Overpowered

    460. Pharoahe Monche - What It Is

    461. Q-Tip - Move/Renaissance Rap

    462. Annie - Heartbeat

    463. Bloc Party - This Modern Love

    464. M.I.A. - Boyz

    465. M.I.A. - Galang

    466. Chad VanGaalen - City of Electric Light

    467. Aeroplane feat. Kathy Diamond - Whispers

    468. Junior Boys - Birthday

    469. Jay-Z - Takeover

    470. Wale - The Kramer

  • eeek. yeah that was missing because it came out pre-2000. i had previously removed that and a few other pre-2000 tracks as well as repeats. that's why some of mine and a few others don't match.
  • no worries.  we just need to keep the numbering consistent.  if a track has already been entered, or it is pre 2000, then we can simply replace the redundant entry.  that way we aren't screwing up the numbering of the following tracks

i went through the thread and double checked for the redundant tracks before i made any changes.  all of the other replacement changes had already been mentioned in this thread.

    401. Death Cab For Cutie - Champagne From A Paper Cup will need to be replaced with another track.

I also saw that you had replaced Morrissey - First of the Gang to Die with Morrissey - Irish Blood, English Heart, which I kept since "First of the Gang to Die" had already been entered.  That was the only other change that I noticed that had not already been mentioned in this thread.

As a rule, all changes to tracks should probably be mentioned in this thread since it is the master list.  Also, it's a good idea on the off-chance that some jerk goes into the spreadsheet and deletes everything. . .
  • hmmm, it should have been replaced already. i'll figure something out and pop it in there.
  • excellent.

i figure we might as well get to 500 sooner than later.  then we can start dissecting it, voting and arguing over which tracks to throw out, and adding more entries (if that's what people want to do).

    30 more songs till we hit 500. . .
  • so are we at 471 then?

    I added two:

    471. "The Best Day In History In Ever", Sybris, Sybris, 2005

    472.  "In Your Heart", A Place To Bury Strangers, Exploding Head, 2009 .... although at the moment, it's just a single, the album will be out Sept. 15 I think.

yeah, we need some fuzzed out/wall of noise guitars in there :)
  • 1. This is an excellent thread, lots of great choices.
    2. It is extremely difficult to choose

But here is what I've got.

    473. Architecture in Helsinki - Do The Whirlwind
    474. Gorillaz - Feel Good Inc.
    475. The Books - A True Story of A True Love
    476. Danger Mouse - Dirt Off Your Shoulder (The Grey Album, though the original was a close call as well)
    477. Justin Timberlake - My Love
  • any thoughts on a track from the recent XX album, I have been obsessed with the album today and couldn't pick one specific track yet. (if I did it would probably be shelter as a personal favorite)
