Best time to post a new track
  • What do you guys recon is the best time to post a track?
I assume most users of elbo.ws live in the united states and there are a bunch of timezones across that country. I personally live in South Africa, so we run on CAT (Central African Time).
So what time is the best? Afternoon, early morning, night? i obviously compensate for the time difference so my post don't generally appear at like 2am in new york.
    kthnx
  • I haven't tracked elbow general flow.

but for general blog traffic the prime time for aggregator is Monday morning before lunch (about 10 am to 12pm eastern).  So you have to get in about 1-2 hour before the rush hour.   around 8 am eastern.  that should put you in lunch time peak hour (assuming you get aggregate properly and it's a regular day. Not everybody is posting like mad trying to fit the rush hour.)

Second prime time is 3pm to 10pm, with peak around 5-7pm, depending on school semester season.

two biggest time zone is eastern time and central european.

but this sort of thing usually have bigger effect for thematic/scheduled contents, rather than one shot post.
  • I guess it depends. The high volume times are also when you find the most blog posts. Your post can be lost in the shuffle at the same time.

If it's a track you are a posting, I would either a) try it to post it before others or b) post it when the same track isn't in the hot post category (you'll have direct competition).

I guess it's easier to say when you shouldn't post. For me 3-am-7am EST are the lowest traffic times and just stay away from that time.
  • When you want people to listen to it is usually the best time
  • elbows tends to pick things up faster than the hype machine. hype can have a delay of several hours but elbows tends to be within the hour, at least that's what i find.
  • cool, thanks.
as the tracks posted on my blog (www.electrotrash.co.za) are by south african artists I'm not too worried about posting them before others do, we usually get it before other s.a. bloggers do, but often s.a. artists do remix international artists so international kids are bound to want to d/l those at least!
i think i'll go for the morning posts (eastern time) seems like then it's during a decent time of day in europe too...
    thanks for the feedback!
  • I've tended to find that posting late afternoon in London (so lunchtime in New York) tends to be the best for picking up traffic, but that it depends far more on what I'm posting. If something captures the blogosphere's imagination then it doesn't matter what time you post; the aggregators will highlight the fact that a given post/track is popular.
  • I've found the best time to post a track is when the post itself is done.... before that and it's just confusing, after that and I wonder what I'm "scheduling" it to do? Unless, I'm trying to drum up a little suspense... but then again, I'm not trying to be the next GvB or anything.
  • When you get to it? Lol, there isn't really a best time.
  • I always heard some golden rule about releasing hot new material on tuesday. Thursdays hot releases get the tune to people right before the weekend, so they got something to jam out to on the car ride out to the parties or at the parties.
  • kif boet, a south african blog! i grew up in cape town, but i'm living in washington d.c. right now and focused mostly on north american and european indie rock (though some of my contributors go into other genres). i'll be sure to bookmark your site!

    cheers,

  • I tend to find Tuesday, just after tea and biscuits, is the best time.
  • So that's just before the first G&T then, no?
