Numero Group is my favorite label right now - the only label where I'll buy their records at the store without hearing a note, confident they'll be stellar.
i haven't really had a favorite label for a while, but back in the day i was pretty obsessed with velvet blue music. they used to put out so much good stuff.
it wasn't even necessarily the label as much as the community that was built around the label. the dude who runs it was basically putting out a lot of stuff from his pals. there was stuff from dudes like the martin brothers, richard swift, frank lenz, menomena, lassie foundation, denison witmer and what seemed like a million other great bands that have fallen by the wayside over the years.
plus it was a great example of a label that had a staunchly DIY attitude and did good stuff consistently.
I did an internship with Absolutely Kosher and Misra (who coincidently operate in the same building as Alternative Tentacles) both really great labels who have done a bit of Spencer Krug based projects as well as some Xiu Xiu and Mountain Goats which is cool.
Moshi Moshi and maybe Bella Union are my favourite labels right now though.
Orange Twin, Elephant 6 Recording Co., Merge, Western Vinyl, Hometapes, Asthmatic Kitty, and Autumn Tone are all high on my list, but I know I'm forgetting someone... I've often wished iTunes had a label column for easy referencing...
Yeah, it might sound cliche, but I've been loving Warp's music for a while now. Incredible roster: Grizzly Bear, Born Ruffians, Bibio,!!!, Autechre, Aphex Twin, DJ Mujava...
There used to be an amazing label called Mister Tramp Records from Scotland. I only found them this year but it looks like they just suddenly stopped operating some time late last year, I sent them a few e-mails and even tried to buy some of their records but no response. Pretty strange from a label who used to work with Frightened Rabbit.
I still have no idea what happened to them but occasionally give their myspace page a play. http://www.myspace.com/mistertramprecords
Well so many record labels of that size are (like us) basically just run by one person in their spare time, so all it takes is for them to have a kid, lose their job, move away, run out of juice - it could be anything and the label basically just ceases to exist.
@Tim theBlueWalrus i did the Great Manchester 10k in 41mins22seconds this sunday just gone. That beat my previous PB by 3mins and 22s which given the little amount of training i did i find astonishing. I think i owe a massive part of this to my soundtrack for the run which was Kitsune Maison 9: Petit Bateau or the Cotton Issue. That just sent me flying from start to finish!!!
I think they may well be about to start working with Edinburgh band Withered Hand, who are fucking brilliant. This is great news for absolutely everyone!
I didn't know the girls running Young & Lost were so young when they started the label, but they are just released their 50th single - and they're both two years younger than me...
Their back catalogue is a who's who of some of my favourite bands over the past few years - http://www.youngandlostclub.com/releases/
Withered Hand and Absolutely Kosher would be so sweet, I know Cory is a big fan
I forgot to mention it ages ago but Cory 'Abko' Brown mentioned Song By Toad as one of his favourite labels in an interview i did with him a while back http://apocketfullofseeds.wordpress.com/2010/04/21/an-interview-with-cory-brown/
actually he does so right before saying that Withered Hand is one of his favourite UK bands
Bay area rules, i was based in North Beach for a while and it was awesome but the really cool shit goes down in East Bay, very jealous. Definitely get down there if you can and try and have a word with Cory he's the best.
I've had this theory for awhile that I'm a 55-year-old folk music fan trapped in a 20-year-old college kid's body, and accordingly I'll always love Rounder.
They appeal to my inner old-man with Robert Plant and Gregg Allman whilst sticking with folkies like Nathaniel Rateliff
