The New Hype Machine
  • Well see... now you are just getting greedy...
  • Vic, it's been thirty-five long years and I am still working on being a man!
  • Being a boy, I seem to be able to manage quite effortlessly, however.
  • Authorized mp3s makes it obvious that most of the other mp3s are unauthorized... I can't see that happening :P
But posting a lot in the dubstep scene, it's amazing how much legit stuff there is out there, especially mixtapes - tell me if that category ever gets added, I'll be in it in a flash :D
  • I'm ambivalent about the dubstep scene, it feels to me very limited these days... like the trance scene, only churning out 3 to 6 quality songs at most every year and each passing year getting increasingly tiresome with the same bag of tricks. There's very few artists doing something significant and with a style of their own, everyone else seem too comfortable jumping on the bandwagon without bringing anything.

Either way, that's just me.... never been a huge fan of the while thing - I do love the work of artists like Milanese, Deadboy, Ramadanman, Mt. Kimbie, James Blake... - and it's always good to find specialized blogs to clue people into a specific genre. I'm too hyperactive to focus myself on a specific one, it'd drive me crazy.
  • That's one of the things I've noticed - when I started my blog, I had very little idea of what sort of music I'd be posting on it, but now that I know roughly what it is (1/3 Dubstep/Electronica, 1/3 Hip-Hop/Rap, 1/3 Everything Else (and of course that could very easily change (I've only got 10 posts (goddamn I'm nesting my parenthesis)))), I've decided one of the things I need to do is properly use categories, probably having a separate rss feed for each genre in addition to the full one; when I posted a post that didn't fit with what I had been recently posting, my subscriber count halved.
  • Anthony I was thinking it'd be cool to have a link to the author's hypem account (when available) somewhere on the blog's hypem page. I'd definitely want to befriend the people behind the blogs if they're active on hypem, follow their loved/last listened tracks.

Actually, and this I know would be much harder to implement it'd be cool to have some sort of shoutbox or comment box in each user's profile (an maybe also on the blog pages) similar to the profiles on last.fm only you know, this would be better as it's in hypem. I mean you already have thousands of users, if you find a way to make them interact between them I'm sure they will appreciate it and it's an incentive to spend even more time navigating through hypem which means more $$$! People love pimping their profiles, showing who they are to the world. The internet is an ego feast. Work it on your favor.
  • I'll second Moka's idea about profiles, I think that's a great idea.
  • @anthony: a quick suggestion!...and also a bit of a request :-D

Where it now says "Posted 6 hours ago >>," I believe it used to say "Click here to read full post" or "Full post" or something. I feel that that historically made it easy for readers/users of Hypem to understand that they could click there to read the full post on the blog that posted it -- and often get the song for download. "Posted x hours ago" however, doesn't exactly have the same "HEY, click me!" draw to it. Anyone else feel this way?

I know this is sending people away from Hypem, but from the music blogger perspective, having a review well-read/visited can be inspiration to keep posting as much as possible.

So, what're the odds of throwing back a "Click to read" or something similar in there after the "Posted x hours ago"?
  • I'd second the above, found that a bit strange when I saw it first. Doesn't seem like it links to the blog the way it's worded at the moment.
  • As a female blogger from a HM-listed site (Binary) NOT listed in the 'Female Bloggers' category, and then my own pet project which I haven't yet come close to attempting to list, I think the gender-based categorical distinction is a nice addition.

In the case of a blog like Binary or my own, which try to focus on the emotional interpretation of music rather than just 'the facts,' I think making a distinction between blogger genders is a useful tool. For example, take a song (by a male artist) with subtly misogynist themes. As a female, I'm going to have a completely different and unique emotional response to the song than would a male. I'm not saying males can't try to relate. However, as a woman I'm somewhat predisposed to interpret said subject matter differently, perhaps a bit more cynically. Or perhaps the song might take on a different meaning for me entirely. For a male listener the song might represent empowerment, whereas for me it might represent degradation. (Those of you who tend towards political correctness might argue that I'm grossly underestimating gender-related interpretive capability. But let's be honest with ourselves, we all tend to be a little biased towards what we know best: in this case, being a male or being a female.) It's not that we aren't equal in the grand scheme--this is the 21st century after all--but human nature has us make snap judgements influenced by our level of familiarity with a certain subject.
I don't think that Hypem is trying to 'judge' blogs based on writer gender. Rather, what I think Hypem is trying to do is highlight the interpretive nature of music as subjectified by gender, which (fortunately or unfortunately) cannot be escaped.

I do think the point Toad raised regarding aggregating based on race is valid, for the same interpretive reasons that I highlighted above. However, I can understand why they shied away from 'race' categories, as that begins to delve into the realm of TOO politically correct. This shit's supposed to be fun, it shouldn't draw those kind of lines in the sand.
  • Politically I sit largely inbetween Socialism and Libertarianism* and Micah P. Hinson's rants about Obama fundamentally change my emotional reaction to his music too.  Where is the liberal bloggers' category, dammit?

I don't disagree with you, everything about who a person is adds nuance and depth to their interpretation of music, but I am not sure why gender is the category chosen to play with in this instance.  Maybe, as you say, because it's not as politically charged as things like race, whilst still clearly being an issue in the world of music.

*Honestly, I assure you, it is possible, stop sniggering!
  • Opinions and assholes, we all gots 'em!

I'm actually more curious how the non-bloggerin' community is taking the new hypems... Is it like Facebook, where everytime they fart a change in your general direction, the status stream becomes a series of rants against the smell?
  • honestly i don't know if the non-bloggerin community cares all that much. :-/

at least, amongst my college friends who use hypem for all their mp3 needs...not a single one has commented on the new layout/categorical system.
unfortunately, to them it's still all about getting 'the most hyped track' versus looking for post quality. such is life. grr.
  • really? people really just want the most hyped track? That's depressing. So, the "indie-kids" are no better than the Top-40 kids they hate?
  • Eh not particularly. I guess I was a little vague.
The 'indie kids' I know (I'm making generalizations here but bare with me) are still likely to seek out the 'meat' in blogs, The indie kids are still worried about content, and to them the new Hypem might prove a useful tool.
However, the depressing group to whom I was referring are those typical 'top 40 kids'. They're using Hypem now too--yes it's become that mainstream, at least in my conservative southern university (surprisingly)--but they aren't concerned so much as to a blog's integrity. Rather, they're looking for a quick new music fix, and a sort of 'mainstream elitism' if you will. So, the growing bulk of the Hypem audience (the mainstreamers will always outweigh us...) are more concerned with quantity over quality, so to speak. At least that's what I've found at my school. Not sure if we serve as a microcosm for the rest of the college audience, but I can only assume the same trends are occurring elsewhere.
  • I think this trend is pretty well evidenced by the persistent appearance of (really shitty) mashups on the Hypem charts. while the trend seems to be dying down a bit (thank god), i think the main force driving all that chart presence were primarily college students.

I think the problem is far more rudimentary than complex song interpretation from gender difference. A lot of time it is as basic as asking for basic help, talking to someone who a person is comfy, pointer to working examples,  history, how-to, how to approach audience, etc Let's face it, female mp3 bloggers are rare, and they don't last for one reason or another. Nobody has written a big how to, explaining why this is and how to get pass it. There is no large enduring mp3 blog headed by woman yet. (maybe I am not paying attention, which probably the whole point of it all. Who is paying attention?) Simply piling people to achieve critical mass in one subject might help a lot to accelerate the learning curve.

stupid mash up has been hypem staple since God knows when. I think it's terminal and chronic.
  • >>So, the "indie-kids" are no better than the Top-40 kids they hate?

    Yes. Well, kind of...

I know I'm speaking in generalities and stereotypes to say that and I hate myself for it, but the indie/hipster group features a lot of the groupthink/bandwagoning that it despises in the mainstream group (for example, the James Blake leak).

Most of my friends that use Hypem are just listening for songs and not to read anything, even if they're into the indie stuff and not the pop remix side. Generally speaking, of course.
  • Yeah, I think people treat Hype more as a listening tool than we always appreciate, not necessarily as a gateway to blogs. Consequently, what's Hot or Popular or whatever becomes kind of the point of the whole exercise really, especially considering it doesn't have a recommendation engine like Last.fm or others.  I suppose bloggers' individual pages work like that a bit, but I wonder if people spend much time there, rather than searching or just listening to the main feed or the hot list.
  • Caveat: the above is all just pure speculation of course!
  • Looks like Hypem changed the Popular list to now say "First posted by..." rather than showing the most-recent.
  • "Bloggers read too much into things, me thinks." he says while drinking tea, pretending he didn't read every post in the thread & thinking about a Hype Machine shirt with a non-ironic "aging white hipster" tag/category logo...
  • HEY YOU!  BEING AN AGEING WHITE HIPSTER DOESN'T MAKE ME A BAD PERSON!

And actually I was never a hipster, so you can just bugger off.
  • Sorry Toad, in the states, all non-USians who are into indie-music are automatically hipsters. It's your "euro-clothes" and exotic accents. On the plus side, you get laid, like, ALL the time. Sorry Canucks, the same doesn't apply. No matter how I got abOOt it, at best, it only brings cute giggles.
  • ("The bigger picture": I'd like to point out that Tsuru's wife is Canadian... And she's pretty hip... And Tsuru giggles a lot regardless of whether she says about or aboot... And, yeah, it is pretty cute when he giggles.)
  • "And Tsuru giggles a lot regardless of whether she says about or aboot (note: ab*00*t)...And, yeah it is pretty cute when he giggles."

Sometimes in the blogging world credits cards can't capture moments, and for those moments...

    it's just priceless.

  • ~Merry Christmas?

    *giggles*
  • lmao. *giggles*

also never heard anybody say *aboot* in my life.
  • really? you just need to get out of the city, nice and north... Best family dinner I had, my wife's step-sister's husband, a fireman from a decent chunk north east of Toronto, was alllll aboot his aboots and ehs! I was mesmerized. Toronto folks don't have much of an accent, just a hearty "sore-ry" for sorry, a slightly pronounced U, and the random eh.
  • Take off ya hosers!
  • i admit to the hearty sore-ry.. I think I type eh? more than I say it

Hmm.. lovin the subscription option to hypem. Found myself on that site more than I used to be
  • Hey guys,

Love the new hypemachine but came across a new feature i haven't seen mentioned yet (i might be wrong)

Clicked on this link today which appeared at the bottom of the new Hypem site... anyone else seen it, very interesting... the context says
"instead of rapidshare, mediafire, yousendit (ysi) or torrent " - with the Link "MP3 Downloads"

    http://hypem.com/download/

    Thoughts??
  • Quiche - It's how Hype indexes their tracks and the links to eMusic, etc.

(There aren't actual MP3 downloads there...)

  • @lee

Ha.. your right! Should have tried clicking on the MP3 before i posted... feel like a "newb" all over again! haha.

    Thanks Lee,

    Paul
