A Sincere Humble Request To Help "Grandpa" With This.....
  • Ok, so my request thread about your top 5 Albums of 2010 failed miserably and I understand why.

Commenting in another thread gave me another idea. I stopped reading music blogs because I feel that a large bit of what is out there is generic and lacking any uniqueness. Maybe I'm right, maybe wrong but most probably am "meni vituiksi".

Anyways, here's a request from a humble old Grandpa. What about a short list of your favorite music blogs you read, that you feel are unique, niche or just overall good? A short list from y'all would be cool to give a nod to other music blogs and would also help an old "meni vituiksi" Grandpa to be happy.

So, what do you say - yea or nay?

  • The Recommender just did a little survey of music bloggers to nominate their own favourite blogs over at http://therecommender.net/2010/10/28/the-best-music-blogs-of-2010/
It brings up a few great suggestions if you are looking for new corners to read.

That said, my personal top 5 are (in no particular order):
    Fucking Dance - http://fuckingdance.blogspot.com
    Song, by Toad - http://songbytoad.com
    The Mad Mackerel - http://madmackerel.wordpress.com
    ABeano - http://www.abeano.com
Sunset In the Rearview - http://sunsetintherearview.com
  • Truants - http://truantsblog.com/
    Louis Louis Blog - http://www.louislouisblog.co.uk/
Kid City Blog - http://kidcityblog.com/ (although it seems to be down at the moment, has been for a few days)
    Palms Out Sounds - http://palmsout.net/
    Neonized Magazine - http://neonized.net/
  • I read a lot of your blogs on occasion... usually through my google reader or through clicking through your tweets.
  • I read a lot less of the blogs these days, but I still make sure to keep up on a couple regularly.

Hits in the Car - http://stytzer.blogspot.com/ (Indie pop, lots of Euro stuff.  Everything Labrador and beyond)

Can You See the Sunset? - http://www.canyouseethesunset.com/ (the most likely to unearth something that I love and never would have otherwise heard - punk stuff mostly)

Knox Road - http://www.knoxroad.com/ (not really off the beaten track, but the writing is good and the music is good, too)

Really miss Shake Your Fist, though.  Now that was a music blog..
  • I hardly ever read other blogs anymore.

    Weekly Reads:

    Wears The Trousers: http://www.wearsthetrousers.com
    Love Shack Baby: http://www.loveshackbaby.net

  • @Muruch, et al,

Thanks so much for the suggestions so far! It's also good to see a mix of blogs I've never heard of and ones from the forum members. I'm keeping a list and will be getting my new laptop Saturday. I've been very sick but this will help me especially during the holidays.

@Tsuru, Yes, definitely every music blogger on this forum is on my list. Was curious though, if my little Tumblr is on your list? ;-) Right now a lot of political nonsense on there but it will be about the music when I get my new lappy.

Anyways Folks, please keep the suggestions flowing. I sincerely appreciate it!

  • Actually, Merz, I don't have your linky! Give it to me so I can add it to my follow!
  • "Linky" in account info.

No music until I get new laptop this weekend. But seriously don't bother, no massive mixtapes and probably too mundane for your tastes.

Though, nice of you to offer.

  • Following.

Merz, I love ya man, but you need to put your chin up and be a little more proud of your endeavours!
  • Ok, to get this thread back on track I thought I should list 5 favorites. I haven't read music blogs in over a year but these are 5 favs from back then.

"And Before The First Kiss" - Colin was my very first cyber friend. We both share a love of Shoegaze. Sadly, my "meni vituiksi" life caused us to break apart. A fantastic writer, huge knowledge of music and a truly wonderful person.

"LargeHearted Boy" - Gutowski is an invaluable resource in music. Everything is there: new music releases, free legal mp3's, links to music articles from around the world, book reviews and tons more. I seriously cannot comprehend how he does this on a daily basis. Truly amazing.

"Chromewaves" - Frank is truly the "Iron Man" of music blogging. Unbeatable. Like Gutowski, I just don't know how he puts out great quality everyday.

"mp3hugger" - Kevin is also one of my first cyber blogging friends. A wonderful guy. Great written reviews, superb taste/knowledge in music, and he runs his own record label. Fantastic.

"Speed Of Dark" - I love Linda. Great blog, excellent writing and photography. She's from my generation and we can really relate well. Plus, she reached out to help me and my "meni vituiksi" life. A beautiful person.

  • The first regular blogs I started reading ( about 2 years ago) were the ones on MBVmusic.com

Definitely ChromeWaves and LargeHearted Boy. I also enjoy SaidTheGramophone just because it provides a very different side to the blogosphere and does it so well. More recently I tend to keep up with most of the people who post on here regularly (Song,ByToad, IndieShuffle, Blue Walrus, Tsuru, Knox Rd etc.) and there have been a few that I seem to find repeatedly on Hypem.

There are also a fair few other non-blog sites which are worth keeping up with (Et Musique Pour Tous, La Blogotheque and Flavorpill (awesome mixtapes) being some cool ones)

hope that's of some interest :)

  • I used to love reading Speed of Dark, but I don't think she's updated in ages.

    Blogs I read consistently:

    http://freakytrigger.co.uk/
Mostly the Tom Ewing stuff, his Popular column is a must-read for any blogger, IMHO.
    http://www.popjustice.com/
Because I love cheeseball pop songs.
    http://www.knoxroad.com/
Nice range and I really enjoy the Abbey's Road feature.
    http://www.muruch.com/
Right when I think I have her pegged, Vic will throw a curveball. The guest posts have been consistently good as well.
    http://crumbler.tumblr.com/
My friend Casey. Not the best source for new music per se, but lots of great music/music industry commentary, quotes, essays, etc.
  • Well for me, the main thing for me is whether they actually post music I actually like - a blog can be the most amazing blog, but it'd have to amazing blog for it to warrant reading on its commentary/articles alone.

But anyway, my faves, in no particular order:
    Media Contender
    http://mediacontender.com/
The way that it focuses on underground music scene allows me to feel just little bit part of it from the other side of the world.

    The Burning Ear
    http://www.theburningear.com/
They pump out music I love at breakneck pace, and their use of of the song titles in the post titles are corny but fun to read.

    Vacay Wave
    http://www.vacayvitamins.com/
I must admit, this is slickest site I've ever seen, it's simply a joy to read, and the extended vitamin metaphor is intriguing.
  • Got my MacBook Pro, still learning how to drive it but can absolutely say I'm never going back to the Microsoft PC world!

Am loving all your suggestions, here are some favs:

@Caleb - "Vacay Wave" is great! Introducing me to the electronic dance music world.

@Sean - "Freaky Trigger" is excellent! Also, thanks for turning me on to another fellow Tumblr - "Crumbler".

@Marcus - "Said The Gramophone" is a classic! Some of the best writing in the music blogosphere.

@Muruch - "Girly Sounds" is fantastic and unique. I love the focus on female artists! Also, loving your blog too.

@Olneyce - "Hits In The Car" was one of my past favs! Stytzer always visited Mars Needs Guitars and is a good guy.

@forwardslash - Heard about "Palms Out Sounds" but never tuned in. Excellent!

@Tim - "The Mad Mackerel" is excellent! BTW. who is that Song By Mr. Toad guy? LOL! Hopefully, Matthew should know by now that he and his blog are one of my favs.

Just wanted to update y'all and say thanks again for the suggestions.

Looking forward to more suggestions from others!

  • I might have to delve into these suggestions, sounds like a treasure trove of goodies!
  • Sean & Merz - Aw, thanks, guys! :) Merz - if you like Girlysounds, you'll probably like Wearsthetrousers since they also focus solely on female artists.
  • @muruch I also am a fan of your blog as well. Nicely done.

@ Loose lips has a very nice blog as well.

I also like Fat Berri's Electronic Music Blog. I'm not sure if he is on the Elbo.ws forum though. Nonetheless, he's got a great, well-organized blog.
  • Hey Dave!

Yeah, I am out of the blog game.  It was eating up all my time, and I wanted to do other things.  I haven't written a post in about a year now, and I haven't been here either in longer than that.  That hasn't stopped me from being totally obsessed with music, however!

I occasionally read Song By Toad, Lost In Your Inbox,  It All Started With Carbon Monoxide, and We All Want Something to Shout For, but not nearly what they deserve.

But really, I just wanted to say thanks so much for the kind words from you and Sean.  It gave me a lump in my throat.

Dave, you know I love you too.  I am so happy to see you here!
