Apple Vs. Google: Oh, It's On!
  • ha ha, now you know why HTC stops making Microsoft phones.

Did You Know Microsoft Makes Five Times More Money From Android than From Windows Phone?

Here's how it's happening: Back in April 2010
Microsoft settled an intellectual property infringement case against
HTC. In the agreement, HTC agreed to pay Ballmer and his cronies $5 per
shipped Android set. Citi says that HTC has sold 30 million sets, adding
$150 million of fresh greens to Microsoft's piggy bank.

Now, Microsoft sold two million Windows Phone licenses over the same
period, which accounts for $30 million dollars using an estimated
license fee of $15 for each Windows Phone shipped.

But there's more. That's not the only way they are going to be
getting money from the Android handsets: Microsoft has sued other
Android phone makers. And if HTC gave up, you can be sure that those are
lawsuits that are also likely going to be settled too. To the tune of
$7.50 to $12.50 per handset sold, says Citi.

    http://gizmodo.com/5806227/did-you-know-microsoft-makes-five-times-more-money-from-android-than-from-windows-phone

Everybody is making sure Microsoft is dead in the water. No more new product that sell.

  • Apple and Samsung bargaining already? gaaahhh...that was lame.  Where is the price war death match?

    http://gizmodo.com/5806098/will-the-ipad-3-have-an-amoled-display

Some reporters from The Korea Herald claim Apple may ditch its IPS LCD display, snub its nose at a new high-resolution Retina display for tablets and adopt AMOLED for its next generation tablet.
Tim Cook is rumored to be talking with Samsung about slapping an
AMOLED in the iPad 3. Cook supposedly made a personal visit and left
behind a sizable advance to secure an ample supply of these displays.
The biggest problem with this theory is that AMOLEDs are in short
supply. Yes, Samsung uses AMOLEDs in their line Galaxy S handsets, but,
duh, they make them. With the way iPads are flying off the shelves,
would Apple really gamble that Samsung could meet this staggering
    demand?
  • In 2009, Intel pulled the plug on Nvidia's
rights to produce chipsets and IGPs that could communicate with its Core
iX (Nehalem) chips. Nvidia was already on its way out of the chipset
market -- the GeForce 320M was its last offering -- but Intel sealed the
deal. A vicious court case ensued -- there was a lot at stake for both
companies -- and a settlement was finally reached at the beginning of
2011. Intel had to pay Nvidia $1.5 billion -- but in exchange, Nvidia
lost all rights to use Intel's DMI and QPI technologies, and to the x86 processor architecture.

But that's all right: With Tegra, Tegra 2, and the upcoming Denver
(Tegra 3) system-on-a-chip, Nvidia is fully invested in ARM. While the
first iteration never really took off, Tegra 2 is the platform that most
2011 Android tablets will use. Tegra 3, when it's released, will
    feature a quad-core CPU, a 12-core GPU, and hardware decoding of 1080p
video. Furthermore, Nvidia has just bought baseband specialist Icera
    for $400 million, which means a Qualcomm-like all-in-one smartphone
chip will almost certainly appear in 2012. With so many baked-in
features, Tegra definitely makes for an appealing smartphone and tablet
chip -- which is fortunate, as its raw processing power is comparable to
a 4-year-old Intel Core Duo chip.

In other news, Nvidia still maintains a 60% share of the "prestige"
desktop graphics card market, and shows no sign of losing any further
ground to AMD/ATI -- but that's not necessarily a good thing. The
discrete graphics processor market -- graphics cards for desktops and
laptops -- is a bad place to be right now. PC sales are slowing, video
games consoles have usurped PCs as the de facto platform for gaming, and
the gap between discrete and integrated solutions is shrinking.
Sales-wise, the next big boost for discrete graphics processors won't
come until the next-generation Xbox and PlayStation -- and even then, it
wouldn't be surprising to see those consoles use integrated solutions
    instead.http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,2845,2385120,00.asp
  • heh heh. Obviously no deal has been reached. And Intel knows they still have the chance to sway Apple and strenghtened x86 market hold. (not the least Intel knowledge about the true state of everybody's fab capability. )

I got the feeling, Apple is confuse and now finds out how deep of a trouble they are in picking a fight against Samsung. They have no idea how complex and deep chip supply chains are. They think they can just barge in, call somebody's sales office and order whatever quantity of chips they need for their iGadgets. Apple needs Samsung for all their product, Samsung only needs Apple for 2% of their profit.

They will be in for even more surprised when foxconn starts dropping their ass and taking tablet order for more lucrative domestic china market when dollar drops/US economy entering full stagflation. All of a sudden Apple is the new Palm Inc. Worst than Motorola. A company with no manufacturing capability, can't supply key components, dwindling OS marketshare, no meaningful sale outside US ... and add dead Steve Jobs on the list too. Apple is SOL.

At an investor event in London, remarks by Intel CFO Stacy Smith gave a boost to the recent rumor that Intel may be in talks with Apple to fabricate the ARM-based chips that go into iPhones and iPads.

"If Apple or Sony came to us and said 'I want to do a product that
involves your IA (Intel architecture) core and put some of my IP around
it,' I wouldn't blink. That would be fantastic business for us," said
Smith in a Q&A session with journalists.

  • "If Apple or Sony came to us and said 'I want to do a product that
involves your IA (Intel architecture) core and put some of my IP around
it', I wouldn't blink. That would be fantastic business for us," he
    said.

"Then you get into the middle ground of 'I don't want it to be a IA
core, I want it to be my own custom-designed core,' and ... that would
be a much more in-depth discussion and analysis," Smith said.

He spoke to reporters at an investor conference in London along with Christian Morales, head of Intel's operations in Europe, Middle East and Africa.

"The data is the data," Morales said. "The [highest sales] volumes are notebooks, then netbooks, then other devices."

  • A report from Japanese Mac fan site Macotakara
said that Apple has ordered a MacBook Air with an A5 processor in it,
rather than the Intel Core 2 Duo or Intel’s Sandybridge chip set, which another rumor from Taiwan’s DigiTimes
said will be arriving in July. The report cites an anonymous source who
claimed to have seen the A5 MacBook Air, which was supposedly built for
Apple by Quanta, one of Apple’s Taiwan-based manufacturers.

    As
rumors go, this is a weak one, and on many levels. We’re only bothering
to mention it in order to squash the idea that Apple is planning on
    shipping such a MacBook Air.

  • Sean Maloney, Intel’s newly appointed president of Intel China, plans to deliver a keynote speech at the Computex
trade show in Taiwan next week where he will unveil a heavy-duty effort
to steer Intel into the production of low-power microprocessors.

Maloney is expected to say that Intel will accelerate its efforts to
make chips that are more appropriate for tablet computers, smartphones,
laptops, and low-power desktops. Intel has been doing that for some
time. But Maloney, a well-respected executive who recovered from a
stroke that kept him sidelined last year, is expected to push that even
farther, according to a source familiar with the matter.

This shift within Intel is similar to the shift that occurred when it
launched its Centrino laptop processors in 2003 — which Intel referred
to as a right-hand turn. This is another right-hand turn, since the
current roadmap isn’t as ambitious when it comes to low power
    consumption.

    http://venturebeat.com/2011/05/27/intel-to-steer-its-center-of-gravity-into-low-power-microprocessors-exclusive/

  • My sense, Apple is in trouble and they are trying to twist Intel arms by saying: We'll stop using intel in notebook if you don't fab A-5.

probably Intel will call Apple's bluff after being coy few more months to gauge how desperate Apple is. (Intel has Android source code, worst case scenario, they can call up some scrappy chinese outfit and offer them discount if they do Pentium/Android tablet. And start the tablet market from there)

Apple on the other hand will have to deal with TSMC flaky 22nm process or pissed off Samsung. Not to mention entire supply chain and manufacturing line in the far east controlled by rivals from end to end.

If the order come to kill Apple, Apple will die in the blink of an eye. Just like Microsoft phones. Apple will be lucky if they can procure a single screw, let alone rare earth products or fab spots. And then Apple products will start randomly die or explode. Class action lawsuit fun.
  • The teenage boy who runs an online business selling white iPhone
4 conversion kits has been hit with a trademark infringement lawsuit
from Apple, though the company also filed a simultaneous request for
    dismissal.

Filed this week in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New
York, Apple's complaint comes against Fei Lik "Phillip" Lam and his
parents, Yuk Lam and Dunwah Lam. Their son created the website
"whiteiphone4now.com," where he sold tools and materials that allowed
customers to modify a black iPhone 4 and make it white.

The site has been offline since Apple issued a cease-and-desist letter
on Dec. 1, 2010. Prior to that, Lam's service served a niche of
enthusiasts who wanted to have Apple's long-delayed white iPhone 4 but
could not yet buy it. The need for such extraordinary measures became
largely negated last month when, after months of delays due to
production issues, Apple finally began to sell the white iPhone 4.

    But as noted by MacRumors,
Apple also filed for a voluntary dismissal at the same time. That has
led to speculation that Apple and the Lam family may have reached a
settlement out of court. Apple's dismissal gives the company the right
to refile the claim if it so chooses, leaving Lam potentially on the
    hook again.

The complaint accuses Lam of "infringing and diluting Apple's famous
trademarks" through the sale of his conversion kits, which included
parts obtained from Apple's overseas manufacturing partners. The kits
included white front and black panels branded with the Apple logo and
    iPhone trademarks.

  • Peter Chou, HTC’s CEO, writes: “There has been overwhelmingly
customer feedback that people want access to open bootloaders on HTC
phones. I want you to know that we've listened.

“Today, I'm confirming we will no longer be locking the bootloaders
on our devices. Thanks for your passion, support and patience.” No

  • The PadFone will likely run the next version of Google Android, code-named Ice Cream Sandwich
by the time it launches later this year. That makes sense, since Ice
Cream Sandwich will be the first version of Android to officially
    support both phones and tablets.

While I have to wonder if the PadFone will be a jack of two trades
and master of none, Asus points out two good reasons why this could be
    an appealing design:

    1. You don’t have to sync your data if it’s all stored on one device.
While Google makes synchronizing apps, contacts, calendar appointments
and other data pretty easy, there’s plenty of data you accumulate on
mobile devices that is harder to keep in sync. For example, with this
system your progress in games, eBooks, audio books, podcasts, and other
data goes with you when you switch from phone to tablet.
    2. Since the phone is powering the tablet, there’s no reason to sign up
for a second wireless data contract. Just pay your carrier for an
unlimited (or limited) smartphone plan and you can use the tablet and
phone anywhere. You won’t get docked with tethering fees because you’re
not using your phone as a simple modem to get a laptop or standalone
tablet online. In this case, the phone is the tablet.

  • While the Eee Pad MeMO tablet Asus is showing off at Computex this week looks an awful lot like the 7 inch tablet Asus first introduced at CES in January, the company has made one major change: The MeMO now features a glasses-free 3D IPS display.

When Asus introduced the tablet earlier this year, it was already
pretty unique thanks to a few unusual features. For instance, the tablet
has a capacitive touchscreen display for finger input. But it also
comes with a stylus with a rubbery tip which you can use for pressure
sensitive input (although it’s not as precise as using a digital pen
with the HTC Flyer or another tablet with an active digitizer). Asus is
also bundling a “MeMIC” Bluetooth hands-free headset for listening to music or making phone calls using the tablet.

  • For as long as I can remember, Android Market has been home to countless console emulators
like Nesoid, Snesoid, Gameboid, and many more. These emulator
applications allow users to use game ROMs from different consoles and
    play their favorite games
on their Android phone or tablet. Surprisingly, they work very well and
a lot of these emulator apps are found among the top paid applications
in Android Market. … Well, they used to be.

Yong Zhang, developer of several emulator apps, woke up this morning
to an inbox full of panic-filled emails and to find that his apps and
developer account (yongzh) had been removed by Google, without notice. Lucky for previous buyers, Zhang has moved his applications over to the SlideME market, where the will be available for free for a limited amount of time.

Unfortunately, this isn't the first time this has happened to
emulator developers. Just last month, Sega filed a complaint over two
emulators in the Market and they were quickly removed. A similar story
came from ZodTTD when the PSX4Droid (a PlayStation emulator) app was unexpectedly pulled from the Market and their developer account was frozen.

So what is with the sudden purging of emulators by Google?

  • And while Computex is first and foremost an event where IT buyers and suppliers can make deals and solidify relationships, it is also a major IT venue for industry leaders to jostle for mindshare. The hot topics this year include market trends such as color e-book readers, 3D Television and cloud computing, but it will be the tablet market that is expected to grab the main spotlight during the show this year.

The Apple iPad has created a surge in demand for tablet PCs, resulting in a situation where semiconductor firms focusing on x86 architecture - mainly Intel - will face off against ARM-based architecture vendors including Nvidia and Qualcomm, while competition in the software arenas will pit Microsoft and its upcoming Windows 8 operating system against Google Android and Chrome.

    -

Intel will also exhibit the X79 chipset (code name Patsburg-HEDT) that will be offered in August 2011, with the chipset to match three 6-core and quad-core Sandy Bridge-E processors to form the Waimea Bay platform.

During Intel's recent analyst day, the company indicated it would be making two major high level changes in its roadmap and those changes should be evident at the Computex show. The first initiative is a renewed focus on essentially reinventing its vision of the PC, one that was much more CE device oriented and featuring ultra-thin, ultra secure and ultra-responsive devices in its plan. The company is stressing features that put it into head-to-head competition with its rivals from the ARM camp, including features such as instant on, always on and always connected, as well as 10 hours of battery life.

While not directly conceding that it needs to better compete with ARM in the tablet segment, Intel most definitely reminded the world why it is the industry leader in the semiconductor industry with its second initiative, which is to accelerate its SoC development strategy. The company plans to halve its two-year process technology development cycle for SoCs for smartphones and tablets starting from 32nm products next year (Medfield) and then 22nm (Silvermont) products in 2013 and 14nm products (Airmont) in 2014, essentially doubling the speed of Moore's Law to help the company improve its standing in the ultra-mobility market.

Nvidia Tegra 2 seeing booming demand

CEO and president Huang Jen-hsun will introduce Nvidia's road maps of developing Tegra and architectures.

However, Nvidia's possible participation in Microsoft's Integrated Development Program specifically for developing Windows 8 is expected to be the question that the media will be asking.

Absent from Computex in 2007-2010, Nvidia will return to the IT event this year to showcase the achievement of Tegra 2, including applications to tablet PCs, smartphones and automotive electronics as well as release quad-core processors and Project Denver. Nvidia plans to unveil quad-core Tegra 3 (Project Kal-El) in the second half of 2011, Tegra 4 (Wayne) in 2012, Tegra 5 (Logan) in 2013 and Tegra 6 (Stark) in 2014.

Intel is trouble. They really have nothin. Their chips are too expensive, too power hunry for thin or low cost tablet. • Steve Job is having a nightmare for sure right now. This is a perfect rerun of PC vs Apple. Apple lost the rich graphic games in the 90's and never recovers. iPad is about to get crushed big time in graphic. Power VR does not have next generation graphic on the work yet. The one after Tegra 3.

  • Apple on Monday confirmed that CEO Steve Jobs
will attend the company's annual developer conference next week and will
discuss forthcoming versions of the company's desktop and mobile
operating system software, Mac OS X and iOS 5, as well as the company's
widely anticipated cloud services offering, iCloud.

MobileMe has been widely regarded as overpriced--given the quality and
storage capacity of free email, storage, and photo services--and
underwhelming. The service's rocky 2008 relaunch didn't alter that
impression. Apple appears to be aware that it has to provide more value
to compete with the likes of Amazon, Dropbox, Google, and other cloud
services. Last year, it made its Find My iPhone service, previously
available only to paying MobileMe subscribers, free to any user of
recent vintage iOS devices with an Apple ID.

It's unclear whether Apple will reveal information about its next iPhone
at WWDC, which isn't expected to ship until August or September.

Samsung and HTC couldn't wait to duke it out with iPhone 5. That phone better be friggin' amazing. Anti gravity and time machine amazing, or else Samsung next generation screen plus quad core will eat it alive.

  • The obvious choice would have been to jump on the Android bandwagon.
Attracted by Google's free software, every other major smartphone maker
except Apple and RIM had already done so, and almost every large carrier
was supporting Android as the only genuine Apple alternative. But
Google was riding so high that it essentially refused to negotiate,
offering no concessions to Nokia despite its global presence. Elop later
told the Salo employees that Google "acted like they'd already won.
Apple and Android deserve some real competition."

That left Microsoft. Its Windows Phone 7 software is well regarded by
technorati ("It's new, it's fresh, it stands out," says Gartner Group
analyst Roberta Cozza), but very few people are buying Windows 7 Phones.
Elop was certain, too, that he'd be accused of being a double agent for
    his former company.

With the clock ticking on the London analyst meeting, talks with
Microsoft went into high gear. On Jan. 10, Oistämö and a few colleagues
spent the morning negotiating in a windowless room in the basement of a
London hotel. To that point, Microsoft had forced handset makers to obey
strict rules about how they could customize Windows Phone 7, and they
wanted the same from Nokia. Not only did Nokia respond that it wanted
the right to innovate freely, it asked Microsoft to commit to using
Nokia technology as a foundation of the Windows Phone platform,
particularly its detailed Navteq maps database. Believing that Microsoft
could not afford to let the largest phonemaker in the world throw its
weight behind Android, Oistämö also asked for a large payment.

  • Now the race is getting serious. Microsoft stops goofing around and they know they are in trouble. Wintel laptop and desktop sale is dipping noticeably. This usually means they come up with OK stuff.  a) apple is toast. again. b) Google better stops thinking they already win the game and get down to work. Google doesn't know personal computer, market research and consumer computing. More importantly google is too rich to ever get desperate and fight in consumer electronic space.

My first demand for Google. I need real file manager for android. Android is now a grown up OS, managing hundred if not thousands of files. Third party file manager is inadequate. second, Icon centric program launching is tired. Tablet will be so much better with widget/tile/driven my tumb and front page system.

  • $299 rockchip tablet is coming... . wintel/apple camp better start panicking now, rockchip is the winner of low cost contest in china.

  • 2. Game Framework Maturity

Let’s face it, most user’s play lots of games on their
mobile devices. Games are huge. On iOS, there are a number of game
frameworks with very active communities, my favorite being cocos2d.
Android, on the other hand, suffers from a lack of mature game
frameworks. I first started writing games on Android and have tried
virtually all of the 2D frameworks I know of. I wanted a full 2D scene
graph and none of them were sufficient. I ultimately wound up using an
    incomplete port
of cocos2d to android which suffers considerably in performance and in
completeness, but is getting a lot better. This fact has resulted in iOS
being a much better platform for developers and users with respect to
    games.

    Thoughts on the Future

Android is a much more advanced and well though out operating system
compared to iOS. It is open. Its applications are free. Even its
development tools are more modern (which I will go into in another
post). Game frameworks will eventually catch up and the communities are
growing. The biggest leg up iOS has over android at this point is
hardware and aesthetics, and that gap is closing fast and might already
be closed. Unlike the laptop market, other handset manufacturers like
HTC and Samsung are producing amazing devices. The IPhone was
clearly superior when I was on my G1. After upgrading to a Nexus One, my
phone was superior to my friend’s IPhone 3GS’, before the IPhone 4 was
released. Next generation phones like the soon to be released HTC
Sensation and Samsung Galaxy S2 are going to blow existing devices out
of the water. The bar for applications on Android is also increasing and
the truly good, sexy apps are floating to the top.

Although I currently still develop primarily for iOS, I expect that
to change soon. All of the low hanging iOS applications have long since
been built and more and more apps are becoming free to compete with the
incumbents. I expect this to affect the profitability of iOS development
and the expectations of users. Android is also gaining market share and
truly has a better user experience. People are starting to
openly prefer their Android phones to their friend’s IPhones. If I had
to make a long term wager on a mobile OS, all my money would be on
    Android.

  • I like the windows metro layer on win 8.... I'm glad they are keeping a form of win 7 underneath for my mousing needs, but that it all works with fingers or mice or whatever. Looking good.   Though... I'll miss my big clean desktop with a sexy wallpaper.
  • Also, Got my gingerbread update to my Evo yesterday. Not much visual change (which is fine, I'm happy with the aesthetics), but got a nice snappy snap to the performance.  Love smartphones. Love my laptop. Still don't understand tablets.
  • I think current tablet is a complete shit. Crime against culture type of shit. And I am blaming Apple.

consider simple thing. weather and news feed. All I want is weather and news information on my screen. clean and beautifully presented as I want it on a screen page. I don't want to know what the app store has to offer, how many apps are available, if the widget gonna work or if I need try 20 different apps to see which works.  .bla bla..

I don't care about all that. I want my weather and news information directly on my screen. I don't want to scroll through my pages of icons, launch it and finally read my news. I don't want to click/launch 4 different apps... I want to reach actual information directly not fiddling with apps. zero click information.

(this is same with email, messages, etc) I always check the exact same thing. I don't want to repeat click same old proceedure again and again.

Same thing with book readers, music and video players. ten millions shitty choices and not one "simply work". take music players, all I want is to find, organize and listen to my music in highest possible sound quality. maybe then extra web information. A player that looks good maybe entertaining, but not essential. I don't care about rolodex album arts that barely work, I don't care about "cloud service" that has 2 millions tracks but not a single one I like, I don't want to have to shift through shitty marketing gimmick, spam and overcharge. I know exactly what I want. don't try to push crap.

Everything is Apple's style disaster. Twenty billions little glitzy apps to sell, works only via wireless, only by Steve jobs permission and dubious Apple information presentation sensibility. And of course motorola is trying   hard to copy this, ripping off and scamming user in apple style cable tv cum tablet walled garden, instead of information device. And they wonder why Xoom is crap. Where is the SD slot?

and how come I still can't connect to my stereo yet?

I  want my music, book and movie in one single click and organized in one file manager app. no run around and no fluff.

That's just for most basic multimedia and internet information. passive consumption.

Where are the "tools"? music, movie, pictures, note taking, computational tool, specialized database viewer... journals, etc. This is the actual tools that make computer worth having right? Do you know, not even apple has lilypond music notation ported yet?  I mean how fuck up is that?

It's the very thing tablet device is created for. (but rest assure, an army of music industry is about to sue everybody for music sheet being available on tablet device.)

And then there is the network. The fact that applications can launch itself, peer through network and calling mothership back annoys me to no end. complete fubar. who the fuck design this scheme? It's dangerous at so many levels.

... Gaming is shit. except for puzzle or sedate games, touch screen does not have the precision and speed required to control modern game. (tilt sensor, compass, etc are useful, but you are not going to play deep game with it. maybe arcade racing or stupid shit like that. rehash of 80's interface.) If I have to imagine tablet gaming, it will be RTS where you can control the movements of 20-30K objects running all over the screen using fingers. Things that can't be done using keyboard, mouse or control pad.

At least Android is open, so army of hackers will soon fix Android and make it into a real and useful computing device instead of Google's spying device. (wifi file transfer, strong kernel level security, controlling permission, filtering, stop big corporation to spy on your device, anti ad-spam, encryption, peripherals, interaction with other computers and electronic hardware, etc)  This part is the reason iPad demise is certain. iPad is only limited to Apple's extremely narrow vision and idiocy. What user can and cannot use their magical tablet. (hence, no emulator, no flash player, no ROM flash, no storage card, no USB, proprietary plug, etc. seriously people. wtf.. you actually take that crap?)

so no. Tablet is not a real tool yet. Privacy level of these devices is "front porch". nearly zero. You don't want to work on your big project on a tablet.

Microsoft buying Skype for a cool 8.5b is not the only M&A news today. Online gaming giant Zynga announced that they had acquired Sapus Media
which is owned by the two developers of the cocos2d gaming engine for
Apples iOS. Terms of the deal were not discussed. This is Zynga's 13th
acquisition in the last 12 months. That is quite a number for a company
    which isn't even public yet.

This acquisition will give Zynga some in house expertise in
developing games for the Apple mobile platform.  Zynga already uses the
technology for Farmville on the iPhone. The technology is also widely
used by companies like Atari and Gamevil. The two lead developers of the
cocos2d project will start working at Zynga right away.

What is interesting is that this is the first time Zynga has acquired
open source technology.  While they are a big consumer themselves of
open source, now they are in the developers chair. Actually they did not
purchase and will not own or control the cocos2d community. That will
remain independent and continue being run by one of the developers of
cocos2d who will now be working for Zynga.

The arrival of the iPhone 4 on Verizon Wireless effectively buoyed the iOS's share of the US smartphone market by nine percentage points sequentially in the first quarter of 2011. However, Verizon's actual iPhone 4 sales for the quarter reached only 2.2 million units, far below industry watchers' previous estimates of 3-4 million units.

Verizon's lower-than-expected iPhone 4 sales mean that it was only a temporary setback for Android. Digitimes Research believes that Android will resume its growth path in the US starting the second quarter.

In fact, Apple's actual shipments of iPhones have missed its internal estimates given to supply chain partners over the recent quarters. The gap between the estimated and actual iPhone shipments expanded to 39.4% in the first quarter of 2011 from 29.3% in fourth-quarter 2010, implying that demand had been overestimated.

A total of 18.65 million iPhones were shipped in the first quarter compared to 16.24 million units in the fourth quarter of 2010. Both numbers came below Apple's targets of 21 million for the first quarter and 26 million for fourth-quarter 2010.

Digitimes Research predicts that about 13.5 million iPhones will be shipped in the current second quarter of 2011, still below Apple's planned sales of 18 million units.

With more Android-based devices hitting store shelves in the second half of 2011, the Google smartphone OS will further widen its gap with iOS thanks to its more complete ecosystem, according to Digitimes Research.

  • The tablet is a couch potato / traveling device for those who don't need a full computer (i.e. most people). I rather couch potato / travel with my full computer then a hobbled computer, but I guess that's just me.
  • Hell... I'd rather pick up a netbook than a tablet for lighter traveling.
  • Tablet is DEFINITELY NOT for traveling, unless all one wants is watching pop movie or other meaningless activities...

It keeps trying to open network connection in hostile environment, it broadcast and request all sorts of personal information to network. A lot of potentially dangerous internal activities are invisible and kept out of user. Applications are not completely under user control, it calls home, it updates at will, broadcasting all sort of information, won't stays shut, etc.

If one is traveling in a country where the phone and internet network are spying device, tablet is going to kill. And Obama administration is thinking he is some sort of super hero using internet doing regime change all over  without thinking any consequences. He doesn't realize other people will soon retaliate and start counter attack. He is not the smartest guy in class by far. facebook, tweet, google, etc. These devices are weak points.Thing will get groovy for sure when the table turned. tablets are created as commercial data mining sponge, snitching on users because telcos and google are setting it up that way to make money. They don't stop and ask, what happens if they don't control the network and the environment turn hostile? Which is 80% of planet surface and 95% of global population. It's cute if one do it for CDMA from the 90's at at some midwestern bumville. But not current global network.

So if one is running around reading banned e-book, wrong account handle, watching wrong movies and transfering wrong images then the tablet broadcasting application list, data log and sale receipt, that guy is dead. If the device leaks information about internet and chat activities, somebody is going to die. If it keeps secret time, location, web log without telling user, it can be used against that user and somebody is going to die... etc.

...you get the picture. (this is on top of the usual rant on raw usability experience and low quality apps in general.)

This is going to get very interesting when US attacking India, creating unrest, or get caught spying using google service and devices. Then some poor indian sucker who works for google running around with a tablet with wrong information is detained in india. well, well ... this is already happening over and over in other places.

Google infantile world view about collecting information on everybody will quickly turn into Darwin award gold mine for sure. They are a global entity that idiot politicians consider domestic intelligence asset, users and staffs are going to get caught in the cross fire.

If there is a world wide epidemic, I do not plan to come near any device with google account on it. They are going to snitch and compile backtrack log on everybody.
  • Google delays Android 3.1 until August. Halts Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and 8.9 shipments till then

Bad news for Android fans waiting to get the latest Honeycomb tablet
running 3.1 version of OS. Android 3.1 has problems and Google decided
to delay it’s launch until August “for most countries”.

And it gets worse. The tablets that were supposed to ship with
Android 3.1 – Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and 8.9 – have been delayed until
    then too.

For now it’s still a rumor. But it comes from a pretty reliable
source – Mobile-Review.com’s Eldar Murtazin – who usually gets things
right, especially this close to the device launch. So I’m pretty sure
we won’t be seeing  Android 3.1 tablets here in Europe until August.

could be related to apple lawsuit. or part shortage.

That's what everyone does with them.  Ever seen them in the airport? It's for games, internet, and movies. The good battery life helps.
  • My missus takes hers everywhere with work (she's an investment manager).  It allows her to take all the documents she will ever need, all her research, and some stupid books for reading in the airport, as well as being a functional internet browser.  She seems pretty much in love with the thing, and she is not tech savvy at all.
  • Yep.... add in the ability to do short form typing (long form, you'll really need a keyboard to be effective), and check done.

But..............  update on the phone front:

  • hee hee...apple is still trying to control what people can and cannot read on iphone so they can keep selling crappy e-magazine from News.corp.

    2. Newsstand. Now you can subscribe to magazines and newspapers and have updates downloaded in the background.

Original? So-so. Android relies on programs that are not part of the
core operating system to view content, in order to allow 3rd parties to
compete against each other. Android apps, including the Market, are
still catching up on subscription and in-app purchases. But the OS has
had background updates and sync for quite some time. The nice thing
about the Android story is that the APIs for this are public.

    3. Twitter. Apple has integrated Twitter into the operating system and its major applications. Whether you like it or not.

Original? Absolutely. Nobody else is stupid enough to do this.

Seriously, Android has these standard messages called “Intents” so
that if your app wants to have a Share button it sends out an Intent
indicating what it’s trying to do. The OS will go out and find all the
apps that can do Sharing and give the user a list of them to pick from.
That can include Twitter, Facebook, SMS, GTalk, and whatever else you
have installed. Even social media apps that weren’t invented yet when
the program was written can be supported.

  • Definitely at war. I am unplugging myself from my last google account before shit hitting the fan.

    http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-06-02/china-s-baidu-gains-most-in-seven-weeks-on-gmail-hacking-report.html

Baidu Inc., the owner of China’s most
popular online search engine, jumped the most in seven weeks in
U.S. trading after Google Inc. said hackers attempted to steal
passwords from hundreds of Gmail users, targeting the accounts
of government officials in the U.S. and Asia.

Baidu rose as much as 4.3 percent, the most on an intraday
basis since April 11, to $138.20. Chinese Internet companies
Sina Corp. and Sohu.com Inc. (SOHU) gained at least 3 percent.

The U.S. government was notified yesterday and is looking
into the allegations, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said.
The FBI is working with Google to review the matter, said Jenny
    Shearer, a bureau spokeswoman.

  • Here’s the mobile news Apple announced today (iOS 5.0, iCloud)

Apple kicked off its annual developer conference today by introducing
the next versions of OS X and iOS as well as a new cloud-based service
for backing up and synchronizing your data. Here’s a quick run-down of
the iOS and iCloud news from today’s event:

    • iCloud lets you backup and sync your data without a PC

Apple’s much-anticipated iCloud service was unveiled today. In a
nutshell, you can use it to backup data from your phone to the cloud,
synchronize documents, contacts, appointments, and photos between
devices, and store your music collection online. The music portion is
already live. The rest of iCloud will be available when iOS 5.0 launches
      this fall.
    • What’s coming in iOS 5.0?

Mobiputing has a run-down of all the major new features in iOS 5.0
including an updated camera app, improved notifications, and more.
    • iOS 5o go PC Free: WiFi sync, OTA software updates

You officially won’t need a computer to use an iPad, iPhone, or iPod
touch once iOS 5.0 hits the streets. Apple will allow you to download
system updates over a wireless connection, and if you do want to sync
with iTunes on a PC, you’ll be able to do it over a wireless network.
    • Apple adds “purchased” apps to App Store

Apple just made it easier to re-download apps you’ve already
purchased, either on the device you’re using or on another device. Just
fire up the App Store and clicked on the “Purchased” tab for a list of
all your apps. Unlike iOS 5.0 and iCloud, this feature is already fully
      available.

Apple also released a developer preview of iOS 5.0 today, so it
shouldn’t take long before more details start to spill out. The company
says the next generation mobile operating system will include 250 new
    features.
