Question for Longtime Bloggers -- hosting MP3s
  • I get emails all the time from music PR saying that so-and-so's blog has premiered a band's new single.  How do you go about being one of those blog's to premiere a single so that your blog is cited for having the debut?
  • By being friendly with bands/management/PRs and having a site that will generate the sort of traffic they want from giving you the "premiere".
  • I have a pretty good relationship with Terrorbird and some of the others -- so I'm guessing that I'm not there with traffic yet -- just signed up with Quantcast and Google Analytics because I didn't know about using them to track stats when I started.  What kind of traffic are they looking for in terms of hits?  Thanks for the help by the way.
  • It really depends on a number of factors.
For a pop or well-known act then it will be pretty much pure traffic, but with smaller acts - they want them featured on sites/blogs that are renowned for that type of music, or for being "cool" - so getting premiered on there works well for all involved.

The jump in traffic really isn't all that big though and is very short lived - unless you get a huge exclusive which is pretty unlikely for all but the huge sites/blogs like Pitchfork or Stereogum. The simple fact is that even if you get the premier, a hundred other sites will have reposted that song/video/whatever within the next few hours for better or for worse.

I wouldn't worry about it to be honest - but if you really want to premier something then talk to the PR people and explain to them why giving you the premier is in *their* interest.
  • The advantage to premiering something is being "first" on Hypem.
    Tim covered the rest.
  • haha I forgot about the 'ole "first" culture
  • fucking firsts.
  • No one wants sloppy seconds.
  • First the worst, second the best, third the one with the hairy chest.

(that maybe just an English saying)
  • Zero the hero. Wait what?!
  • What the fuck you saying @SGTMT I've got a hairy chest. image
