Tablet frenzy has hit Southeast Asia's developing countries with
technology lovers there having snapped up more than 1.6 million tablets
over the twelve month span of 2011.

Based on research compiled by GfK Asia,
smartphones have taken over the market for mobile handsets in Southeast
Asia. The region's use of smartphones has exploded with two out of every three mobile handset users now carrying a smartphone
in his back pocket or in her purse. Last year, one in two handset
owners in the area was using a smartphone. In areas like Singapore and
Malaysia, these devices are employed by 88% of those carrying a mobile
phone. Smartphone use continues to grow in the region. In the first
quarter of this year, 7.7 million units were purchased at a cost of $2.4
million USD. GfK Asia says that in countries like Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Philippines, and Cambodia, growth in smartphone use year over year ranged from 40% to as high as 400%.
Touch
only models are becoming a favorite of smartphone users in the area.
While making up 47% of smartphone models in use last year, that figure is now up to 71%.
Of those smartphones sold in the region during Q1, 35% were equipped
with an 8MP camera or higher vs. 12% in 2011's first three months.
Certain countries like Cambodia (70%), Singapore (67%) and
Malaysia (58%) account for much of the demand for units with mid to
high-end camera sensors aboard.

Android is on escape velocity path in southeast asia. will be about same as Korea 2-3 yrs ago soon. 70-80% marketshare, and going to be real money by 2015. Apple has no fighting chance whatsover since they have almost no root there.

While the words didn’t expressly pass through the website or anyone
affiliated with it, one can only assume that Facebook was in an
apologetic mood a few days ago with the official app’s most recent
update. For those who don’t know, Facebook had taken some Google+ style
tactics and added a few apps along with the main one. Users who
downloaded or updated the app were treated with Facebook Camera and
Messenger apps. To put it bluntly, people didn’t like it.
Thus was born the Facebook Icon Remover app,
which in just a couple of short weeks racked up well over 1000
downloads. The point of the app? To remove the Facebook Camera and
Messenger Icons from the app drawer so people at least had the ability
to not look at them anymore. There was really no point for Facebook to
include them as the Messenger app was (and still is) available as a
separate app on the Google Play Market, and since every single stock
camera app on every Android device has a “share with Facebook” feature,
the camera wasn’t exactly useful either.
The report by comScore, a study of mobile behavior, found
Google sites attracted 93 million of the 97 million Americans using
their smartphones for the Internet.
Next was Facebook with 78 million, followed by Yahoo! (66 million)
Amazon (44 million) and Wikimedia, which includes the Wikipedia site (39
million).
But it also found that 80 percent of time spent was represented by "app" usage compared to 20 percent via browser.
Twitter saw an even higher percentage of time spent with apps at 96.5 percent of all minutes.
The most popular app was Apple iTunes with 32 million users, followed by Google Maps with 29 million and Facebook with 26 million.
Social networking was a particularly popular activity on smartphones, and Facebook led the pack, with the average Facebook mobile user spending more than seven hours via browser or app in March.

Facebook will start suing google, I bet. bundling G+ with 4.0.4.

As for rumored specs, the Hayabusa is said to sport a
dual-core Snapdragon S4 Pro chipset -- that's the one with the faster
Adreno 320 GPU -- with 1GB of RAM, a 4.55-inch 720p screen (with
on-screen buttons), and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.
A whopping 2200mAh battery and 13MP camera are also rumored. If
accurate, these specs would make the Hayabusa a worthy competitor to the
HTC One X and Samsung Galaxy S III. And if rumors of a 7-8mm thin
chassis are true, the device could also be a worthy successor to last
year's Xperia Arc.
A leaked roadmap suggests that the Hayabusa may appear in July around the €500 mark, while recent rumors from UnwiredView suggest a June announcement could be on the cards.

In this episode of XDA Developer TV, we get a little hands-on time with
Samsung’s latest flagship, and our own Portal Administrator Will Verduzco
(that’s me!) puts the SGS3 to the test. We begin by taking a look at
browser performance and voice control. Then, we test for USB host
functionality (hint: it works) using Elite Recognized Developer Chainfire‘s DSLR Controller App. Finally, we examine the size compared to the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, and cover some notable additional features and gestures.
Raising
the specter of last-generation browser battles, Mozilla launches a

Windows RT is DOA. Noody is going to buy that device, just like Lumia.
Though the report identified a smaller iPad as a 7-inch model, iMore wouldn't commit to that size, saying it was using the number "generically." Other reports have given a more specific size of 7.85 inches, or nearly two inches smaller than the current 9.7-inch iPad.

That news is that the company’s highly
anticipated Tegra processor that will contain built-in connectivity to
4G LTE networks will not be available until 2013. It had previously said
that the processor would be ready later this year. Code-named “Grey,”
it was to be Nvidia’s answer to rivals like the Snapdraggon chips from
Qualcomm. But the good news is that LTE isn’t going away any time soon,
and Qualcomm is also facing supply problems so it won’t be too much of
an issue to catch up.
“Looking forward, you’ll see Tegra 3 LTE phones with partners’
baseband processors in the second half of this year and then next year
with our own LTE baseband processors as well,” said Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun
Huang during today’s call. Apparently, phones powered with Grey might
not even be available until the end of 2013, so Nvidia certainly does
have its work cut out for it.

The leaked NTT DoCoMo spec sheet also gives us further colour on
specifications. The dimensions of the handset are 131mm x 69mm x 10.5mm
and will weigh 127g. The thinnest point of the phone will be just 8.6mm,
the thinnest point for the Xperia arc was 8.7mm. It will also come with
a 1700mAh capacity battery. Some of these stats were rumoured earlier
this week, but were not officially revealed by Sony Mobile. If any
Japanese readers want to decipher any other clues below then feel free!

This is crazy advanced phone. ....
There are three operating voltages for SIM cards: 5 V, 3 V and 1.8 V (ISO/IEC 7816-3 classes A, B and C, respectively). The operating voltage of the majority of SIM cards launched before 1998 was 5 V. SIM cards produced subsequently are compatible with 3 V and 5 V. Modern cards support 5 V, 3 V and 1.8 V.
The microcontrollers used for SIM cards come in different configurations. The typical ROM size is between 64 KB and 512 KB, typical RAM size is between 1 KB and 8 KB, and typical EEPROM size is between 16 KB and 512 KB. The ROM contains the operating system
of the card and might contain applets where the EEPROM contains the so
called personalisation, which consists of security keys, phone book, SMS
settings, etc., and operating system patches.
Modern SIM cards allow that applications can be loaded when the SIM
is in use by the subscriber. These applications communicate with the
handset or a server using SIM application toolkit, which was initially
specified by ETSI
in TS 11.14. SIM toolkit applications were initially written in native
code using proprietary APIs. In order to allow interoperability of the
applications Java Card was taken as the solution of choice by ETSI.

Starting up a new mobile platform is surely a challenge now that
incumbents iOS and Android have such a strong following. The biggest
obstacle could be finding developers to write applications for an
emerging system. But OpenMobile might give hope to Tizen, one of the newest operating systems for smartphones and tablets: Using OpenMobile’s software, Tizen devices can run native Android applications as shown in this video captured by the Handheld Blog.

Sky Gamblers party mode, Infinity Blade Dungeons, Star Academy, Nike+ Training and more on the way to iPhone and iPad

Ng and his colleagues showed me nine
apps and one iBook during the briefing, although he had a number of
meetings and the selection of apps may have varied from journalist to
journalist – in other words, this isn't the definitive list of the apps that Apple is showing off.
All
of them are iOS exclusives, for now at least. This seems to be where
the battleground is heading between iOS and Android, as Apple ramps up
its backing for apps that aren't available on other platforms.
See also the three exclusive apps shown at the unveiling of the company's new iPad in March, and senior vice president of worldwide marketing Philip Schiller's public abandonment of Instagram when it "jumped the shark" by being ported to Android.
But yes, the apps. Namco's Sky Gamblers: Air Supremacy
is already out – and was one of those iPad-event demos – but its
publisher is adding a party-play multiplayer mode designed to be used
with iOS' AirPlay feature and a TV.

The prototype is far from entering production, but Seraku officials
told The Verge that they think they have a good chance of finishing the
project and releasing it in the near future.
The company also
pointed towards two specific uses for the mirror. They hope to sell it
to beauty salons to replace traditional magazines and newspapers and to
bars for filing out questionnaires. The Smart Wash Basin might be your
perfect drinking partner and, if you find yourself drinking one to
many “cervezas” and getting in the mood to talk to someone, you only
have to direct your attention to the Seraku-manufactured LCD screen!

Verdict
If you’re in the market for a simple tablet that you’ll use primarily
to access music, movies, books, and other content from Amazon, it’s
hard to beat the Kindle Fire — especially since you can sometimes find
refurbished models for $139 to $169.
But if you’re looking for a more full-featured tablet with support
for the full Android software experience, the ability to snap photos,
add storage with a microSDHC card, or remote control your television,
the $249 Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0) is currently the tablet to beat.

A handful of companies I haven’t mentioned yet in this review also
offer 7 inch Android tablets for $300 or less. Acer and Archos spring to
mind. And Asus is expected to launch a budget Android 4.0 tablet soon.
But I haven’t found another tablet that has the speed, display quality,
and looks of the Galaxy Tab 2 all in one package.
If I was in the market for a budget tablet today, this is probably
the one I would buy — although I suspect I’d also install CyanogenMod or
another custom ROM to get rid of TouchWiz as soon as the first custom
ROM with full hardware support is released.

It's based on electrostatic technology that creates a physical force
rather than giving you a jolt. Makinen describes it as a force field.

Seen this in Japan half a year ago. It will be in Toshiba. Maybe they can turn the whole front panel into big electro static speaker. (which is what the system basically is)
“From poking around the kernel commits, the device they’re working on together features an Exynos 5250
(Dual core A15), with Mali T-604 graphics clocked at up to 533mhz
(codename: vithar). For reference, the Mali 400 found in Galaxy S II /
Exynos 4210 is clocked at upto 266mhz. SGS III and Exynos 4412 feature a
Mali 400 clocked higher, and _that_ GPU comes top of the smartphone
benchmarks besting even the iPhone 4S, so this should be much better.” –

Today, I uninstalled the Amazon Appstore and bought all the FAOTD (free app of the day) apps I've been really using. Why did I do it? Because, mildly put, the Amazon Appstore app, which is required for all Amazon-installed
apps to run and perform their license checks, has affected my battery
life in very negative ways. Even if you never open it, it will keep
running in the background, using up valuable CPU cycles, keeping the
device awake when it should be sleeping.

A new Firefox for Android Beta is now available for download and testing.
This beta has a redesigned look that blends in with the Android user
interface, performance enhancements and support for third-party plugins
like Flash for a better mobile browsing experience.
Firefox for Android Beta has all of the features you know and love
like Firefox Sync, add-ons and tabbed browsing, plus a new Awesome
Screen and enhancements to startup and response time, graphics
performance and panning and zooming.
We are always working on a beta here at Mozilla, but this one is
special because we’ve done a lot of extra work to add features, improve
performance and address things that make mobile browsing faster and
easier.

As Apple wades through patent battles and criticism over working conditions in other parts of Asia, it faces a different kind of resistance in India: a consistently low customer base.
Rival Android-based phones and BlackBerrys overshadow Apple’s flat
2.4 per cent market share as they continue to be increasingly popular
with the country’s youth and business markets.
Analysts say the reach of the Android operating system across global
and domestic brands attracts millions of low- and mid-budget customers
in India, as does the wide variety of apps available in the Android
Market.
“In India, there are 17 global and Indian brands that offer about 125
Android phones between them. So essentially the price range and the
choice of models make it attractive… especially to college-goers and
corporate users,” Jayanth Kolla, partner at Bangalore-based technology
research firm Convergence Catalyst told beyondbrics. “There are several
models already available that are under $100… [and] the user experience
on them will improve going forward this year.”
By comparison, an iPhone costs upwards of $400, a deterrent for all
but the most dedicated Apple fans in India. The technology giant sold
only about 75,000 units here last quarter, a tiny 0.2 per cent
contribution to its global sales of 37m.

India is going to be as big as china for android. India will be the reason huge mid range Android smartphone exist.

It’s also being said that Google might announce Android 5.0 (rumored as
Jelly Bean) at next annual Google I/O conference in June ‘12. But we
wouldn’t bet too much on it. Google has always preferred to announce its
new OS with the device itself whenever it launched a device – as in the
case of all Google devices so far: Nexus One, Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus –
so, chances are definitely more than not that Google would announce and
launch the Jelly Bean and next Nexus together, in October, beginning
the sale of phone in US (and UK too perhaps) with other markets being
covered asap.
bla bla... nothing new really. They better include file manager in 5.0. ffs.
