Apple Vs. Google: Oh, It's On!
  • image

2] Build quality: Maybe same. Once we have the SGS3 in
hand, we can be more sure. But in all probability, both phones should be
equal in this respect. Also Gorilla glass 2 in SGS3.

    Verdict: Tie

3] Display: More sub-pixel on HOX. Many people don't like
PenTile. But at such resolution, I don't think it would be such a big
deal. The display in SGS3 is 21% bigger area than SGS2. With this comes
60% more sub-pixels compared to SGS2. So, this should be definitely
better than SGS2 display. Note that Sensation had more pixels compared
to SGS2 (qHD vs WVGA), still it didn't stop SGS2 to sell few times more
than Sensation. Needless to say texts will be crisper on HOX, but SGS3
wins hands down on contrast and black levels. Common folk tend to like
the AMOLED screens just for vibrant and punchy colours. As per Anandtech: Take the Galaxy Nexus, subtract the luminance grain, make it a bit bigger, and you have the SGS3 panel.

Note that AMOLED is a big selling factor for common folks. There are
only 2 brands in mobile display - Retina and AMOLED. IPS / PLS / SLCD /
NOVA / INFINITY / AVS does not make any difference for general people. I
can bet that HD Super AMOLED logo itself will sell a lot more units for
Samsung. Plus or no Plus simply won't matter.

Verdict: HOX for XDA-nerds, SGS3 for general public.

  • Tablet sales in SE Asia hit US$962m in 2011

Tablet frenzy has hit Southeast Asia's developing countries with
technology lovers there having snapped up more than 1.6 million tablets
over the twelve month span of 2011.

    http://www.asiaone.com/News/Latest+News/Science+and+Tech/Story/A1Story20120502-343292.html

Report: Smartphone use soars in Southeast Asia

Based on research compiled by GfK Asia,
smartphones have taken over the market for mobile handsets in Southeast
Asia. The region's use of smartphones has exploded with two out of every three mobile handset users now carrying a smartphone
in his back pocket or in her purse. Last year, one in two handset
owners in the area was using a smartphone. In areas like Singapore and
Malaysia, these devices are employed by 88% of those carrying a mobile
phone. Smartphone use continues to grow in the region. In the first
quarter of this year, 7.7 million units were purchased at a cost of $2.4
million USD. GfK Asia says that in countries like Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Philippines, and Cambodia, growth in smartphone use year over year ranged from 40% to as high as 400%.

    Touch
only models are becoming a favorite of smartphone users in the area.
While making up 47% of smartphone models in use last year, that figure is now up to 71%.
Of those smartphones sold in the region during Q1, 35% were equipped
with an 8MP camera or higher vs. 12% in 2011's first three months.
Certain countries like Cambodia (70%), Singapore (67%) and
Malaysia (58%) account for much of the demand for units with mid to
    high-end camera sensors aboard.

Android is on escape velocity path in southeast asia. will be about same as Korea 2-3 yrs ago soon. 70-80% marketshare, and going to be real money by 2015.  Apple has no fighting chance whatsover since they have almost no root there.

Shares of Blackberry maker Research in Motion dipped to an 8-year low on Thursday, after this week's demo of its make-or-break new operating system failed to inspire investors and tech gurus.

Research In Motion Ltd (RIM.TO) gave developers and analysts a glimpse of its next-generation BlackBerry 10 smartphone at its annual BlackBerry World showcase. Most agree that the software looks decent, but analysts doubt that the product will be able to reverse RIM's fall from grace.

The Canadian company is counting on the BlackBerry 10 platform to win back eroding market share as consumers and professional customers flock to flashier devices made by Apple Inc (AAPL.O) or powered by Google Inc's (GOOG.O) Android.

"While we believe RIM is making some progress, we are unsure if BB10 will be enough to slow down strong iPhone and Android momentum," Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu said in a note to clients.

  • Lol. facebook thinks Android users are bunch of dumbasses... until people start writing "remover" app. Sooner or later people will move out of that slum hole, just like MySpace.

    http://www.xda-developers.com/android/facebook-says-sorry-takes-it-all-back/

While the words didn’t expressly pass through the website or anyone
affiliated with it, one can only assume that Facebook was in an
apologetic mood a few days ago with the official app’s most recent
update. For those who don’t know, Facebook had taken some Google+ style
tactics and added a few apps along with the main one. Users who
downloaded or updated the app were treated with Facebook Camera and
Messenger apps. To put it bluntly, people didn’t like it.

Thus was born the Facebook Icon Remover app,
which in just a couple of short weeks racked up well over 1000
downloads. The point of the app? To remove the Facebook Camera and
Messenger Icons from the app drawer so people at least had the ability
to not look at them anymore. There was really no point for Facebook to
include them as the Messenger app was (and still is) available as a
separate app on the Google Play Market, and since every single stock
camera app on every Android device has a “share with Facebook” feature,
the camera wasn’t exactly useful either.

  • Google is leading Facebook in the race for smartphone users, a US survey showed Monday.

The report by comScore, a study of mobile behavior, found
Google sites attracted 93 million of the 97 million Americans using
    their smartphones for the Internet.

Next was Facebook with 78 million, followed by Yahoo! (66 million)
Amazon (44 million) and Wikimedia, which includes the Wikipedia site (39
    million).

But it also found that 80 percent of time spent was represented by "app" usage compared to 20 percent via browser.

Twitter saw an even higher percentage of time spent with apps at 96.5 percent of all minutes.

The most popular app was Apple iTunes with 32 million users, followed by Google Maps with 29 million and Facebook with 26 million.

Social networking was a particularly popular activity on smartphones, and Facebook led the pack, with the average Facebook mobile user spending more than seven hours via browser or app in March.

  • Blurry-cam pic claims to show Sony LT29i Hayabusa

    image

As for rumored specs, the Hayabusa is said to sport a
dual-core Snapdragon S4 Pro chipset -- that's the one with the faster
    Adreno 320 GPU -- with 1GB of RAM, a 4.55-inch 720p screen (with
on-screen buttons), and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.
A whopping 2200mAh battery and 13MP camera are also rumored. If
accurate, these specs would make the Hayabusa a worthy competitor to the
HTC One X and Samsung Galaxy S III. And if rumors of a 7-8mm thin
chassis are true, the device could also be a worthy successor to last
    year's Xperia Arc.

A leaked roadmap suggests that the Hayabusa may appear in July around the €500 mark, while recent rumors from UnwiredView suggest a June announcement could be on the cards.

  • Nvidia ‘Grey’ LTE processor pushed back to 2013

That news is that the company’s highly
anticipated Tegra processor that will contain built-in connectivity to
4G LTE networks will not be available until 2013. It had previously said
that the processor would be ready later this year. Code-named “Grey,”
it was to be Nvidia’s answer to rivals like the Snapdraggon chips from
Qualcomm. But the good news is that LTE isn’t going away any time soon,
and Qualcomm is also facing supply problems so it won’t be too much of
    an issue to catch up.

“Looking forward, you’ll see Tegra 3 LTE phones with partners’
baseband processors in the second half of this year and then next year
with our own LTE baseband processors as well,” said Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun
Huang during today’s call. Apparently, phones powered with Grey might
not even be available until the end of 2013, so Nvidia certainly does
have its work cut out for it.

4G data speeds, add up to a fantastic smartphone and a fitting flagship
    for HTC’s 2012 range.

This is crazy advanced phone. ....

  •  high end Smartphone ranking so far...(my ranking dammit)

    - Sony Xperia GX
    - Samsung Galaxy S3
    - HTC One X
    - Sharp Aquos 104SH
    - Huawei Ascend D

    - Sony Xperia Acro HD
    -  iPhone 4S
    - Google galaxy Nexus
    - Motorola Droid RAZR maxx
    - Samsung Galaxy Note
    - LG Prada 3.0

Apple is very much behind on everything. Their phone is aging. partying like it's 2010.

My wish list for next smartphone:
    - either go all in one ultra light/thin minimalism, or Sony/Nokia style bright color with all sorts of features.
    - sub 140g, 7mm or less.  rugged, water/dust resistance.
    - 720p, 4" screen at least. High color accuracy, (readable under shade outdoor)
    - it is way past time to remove SIM card. (this thing DOES NOT MAKE any sense) This archaic technology is from LAST CENTURY modern smartphone can store entire continent ID number ffs.
    - NO more physical plug (HDMI) only micro USB and 4 pin universal charger. Even  charger should soon go wireless. USB should be replaced with optical connection ASAP.
    - Battery should last between one or two day with medium use.
    - Universal docking system. (charger, NFC, highspeed wifi)  One should be able to dock the phone half drunk, in pitch dark. Current smartphone is too high maintenance. cables, different voltages, proprietary plugs, etc. This is cute for feature phones, but unacceptable for a personal computer device. A simple low end dock should last years instead of being disposed every new phone comes. Save the earth.
    - more and higher quality sensors. (camera, audio, location, etc)
    -  smartphone has to work seamlessly with PC, TV/screen/monitor, low cost universal docking system connected to cloud/server. other smartphones. Printer? hello...?
    - The smartphone should help user handle huge amount of user generated files (seriously guys, file manager, security layer, standardized directory structure, etc...) It is getting out of hand, there are thousands of these... notes, images, audio recordings, settings to external devices, movies, all sort of cloud services junks...)
    - Fix security model. ( The era of device controlled by phone company is over) There is too much personal information at stake for these fuckers to spy on.  Phone company cannot be trusted beyond driver for modem. They should be banned from OS. Nevermind installing spy app or locking this and that.
    - User should be able to seamlessly manage owning 3-4 smartphones at the same time. The era of one phone for 2 years is OVER.
    - More useful cloud services. more advanced apps.
    - Somebody kill the phone company already. They are the biggest barrier to tech progress. Bad service, expensive, spying, low speed, etc.
  • Subscriber identity module

There are three operating voltages for SIM cards: 5 V, 3 V and 1.8 V (ISO/IEC 7816-3 classes A, B and C, respectively). The operating voltage of the majority of SIM cards launched before 1998 was 5 V. SIM cards produced subsequently are compatible with 3 V and 5 V. Modern cards support 5 V, 3 V and 1.8 V.

The microcontrollers used for SIM cards come in different configurations. The typical ROM size is between 64 KB and 512 KB, typical RAM size is between 1 KB and 8 KB, and typical EEPROM size is between 16 KB and 512 KB. The ROM contains the operating system
of the card and might contain applets where the EEPROM contains the so
called personalisation, which consists of security keys, phone book, SMS
settings, etc., and operating system patches.

Modern SIM cards allow that applications can be loaded when the SIM
is in use by the subscriber. These applications communicate with the
handset or a server using SIM application toolkit, which was initially
    specified by ETSI
in TS 11.14. SIM toolkit applications were initially written in native
code using proprietary APIs. In order to allow interoperability of the
applications Java Card was taken as the solution of choice by ETSI.

    Exclusivity on the rise

Ng and his colleagues showed me nine
apps and one iBook during the briefing, although he had a number of
meetings and the selection of apps may have varied from journalist to
journalist – in other words, this isn't the definitive list of the apps that Apple is showing off.

    All
of them are iOS exclusives, for now at least. This seems to be where
the battleground is heading between iOS and Android, as Apple ramps up
its backing for apps that aren't available on other platforms.

See also the three exclusive apps shown at the unveiling of the company's new iPad in March, and senior vice president of worldwide marketing Philip Schiller's public abandonment of Instagram when it "jumped the shark" by being ported to Android.

But yes, the apps. Namco's Sky Gamblers: Air Supremacy
is already out – and was one of those iPad-event demos – but its
publisher is adding a party-play multiplayer mode designed to be used
with iOS' AirPlay feature and a TV.

  • Verdict

If you’re in the market for a simple tablet that you’ll use primarily
to access music, movies, books, and other content from Amazon, it’s
hard to beat the Kindle Fire — especially since you can sometimes find
refurbished models for $139 to $169.

But if you’re looking for a more full-featured tablet with support
for the full Android software experience, the ability to snap photos,
add storage with a microSDHC card, or remote control your television,
the $249 Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0) is currently the tablet to beat.

A handful of companies I haven’t mentioned yet in this review also
offer 7 inch Android tablets for $300 or less. Acer and Archos spring to
mind. And Asus is expected to launch a budget Android 4.0 tablet soon.
But I haven’t found another tablet that has the speed, display quality,
and looks of the Galaxy Tab 2 all in one package.

If I was in the market for a budget tablet today, this is probably
the one I would buy — although I suspect I’d also install CyanogenMod or
another custom ROM to get rid of TouchWiz as soon as the first custom
ROM with full hardware support is released.

  • Samsung, HTC boost Android marketshare

Research from Kantar WorldPanel on Tuesday showed Android gaining share strongly in most of seven major markets -- Australia, Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United States -- in the 12 weeks to mid April.

In Spain and Italy, its market share more than doubled year-on-year to 72 per cent and 49 per cent respectively, while it almost doubled to 62 per cent in Germany.

Strong demand for the iPhone 4S helped market No.2 Apple narrow the gap with Android in the United States and Britain, but its share slipped in continental Europe.

  • India: Android outpacing iPhone

    http://blogs.ft.com/beyond-brics/2012/04/23/india-android-outpacing-iphone/

As Apple wades through patent battles and criticism over working conditions in other parts of Asia, it faces a different kind of resistance in India: a consistently low customer base.

Rival Android-based phones and BlackBerrys overshadow Apple’s flat
2.4 per cent market share as they continue to be increasingly popular
with the country’s youth and business markets.

Analysts say the reach of the Android operating system across global
and domestic brands attracts millions of low- and mid-budget customers
in India, as does the wide variety of apps available in the Android
    Market.

“In India, there are 17 global and Indian brands that offer about 125
Android phones between them. So essentially the price range and the
choice of models make it attractive… especially to college-goers and
corporate users,” Jayanth Kolla, partner at Bangalore-based technology
research firm Convergence Catalyst told beyondbrics. “There are several
models already available that are under $100… [and] the user experience
on them will improve going forward this year.”

By comparison, an iPhone costs upwards of $400, a deterrent for all
but the most dedicated Apple fans in India. The technology giant sold
only about 75,000 units here last quarter, a tiny 0.2 per cent
contribution to its global sales of 37m.

Customs orders are completely classified — excluded even from the Freedom of Information Act

    ---------------------------------------

HTC should introduce unlocked, GSM direct to customer product. just to see if design and quality can win in US. $599, I think can fly for 45nm generation.

I personally think the $399, Galaxy nexus gambit is very doable. But they should at least change the chasis color to give it more marketing push. (same everything else)
  • Apple's iPhone 4S helped it secure the second place in the US and the UK, but the iOS position in continental Europe weakened. The UK also saw strong demand for the HTC One X - the 12 week period that the report is on covers less than a week of One X availability, but the phone still made it to the Top 10.

Windows Phone is slowly gaining traction thanks to Nokia's switch to the platform (the Finnish company still has a strong presence in Europe). In Germany, WP7 doubled its share to 6% and it got to the 3-4% mark in the US, the UK, France and Italy.

Apple sees iPhone sale is collapsing everywhere... lol.  In asia S4 doesn't even have pulse anymore. Europe is next. (I swear, whoever in charge of Android 4.0/galaxy nexus strategy has to be fired, or at least put in corner office. That guy is total market loser. Android could have won the market easily by now. instead of giving apple 6 months free breathing room.  galaxy nexus doesn't even sell that many. )

If I were HTC, I will start pushing hard in UK, Canada, Mexico, Australia, (entire europe is easy game for One X.) ... Singapore has to be in 20-30% marketshare.. Apple knows they are failing, so they are going to play very dirty.   HTC better hurry, because Sony next generation models are truly deadly in Q2.
  • NTT Docomo Summer 2012 models are out... Sony Xperia GX is in there.

This model will be a mega chart topper if Sony doesn't fuck up. (as usual it's very advance phone, TSMC may not be able to fab as many chip as qualcomm wants to.)

  • Rumor: Next Nexus, Also The First Android 5.0 Jellybean Device, Launching in Early October ’12

It’s also being said that Google might announce Android 5.0 (rumored as
Jelly Bean) at next annual Google I/O conference in June ‘12. But we
wouldn’t bet too much on it. Google has always preferred to announce its
new OS with the device itself whenever it launched a device – as in the
case of all Google devices so far: Nexus One, Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus –
so, chances are definitely more than not that Google would announce and
launch the Jelly Bean and next Nexus together, in October, beginning
the sale of phone in US (and UK too perhaps) with other markets being
    covered asap.

bla bla... nothing new really. They better include file manager in 5.0. ffs.
