If you don't know the story as to why The Morning Benders decided to change their name to POP ETC , then you should read this . I certainly will infinitely and forever love the formerly known band for this: Frank and I saw them perform at The Troubador . They played through a long set and saved their best for the end. Typical LA indie crowd didn't budge until "Excuses" came up, at which point the room came alive with swaying lovers... You can't [...]

It is unlikely that any fans of the Morning Benders will have missed the fact that they've been reborn as POP ETC. Unfortunately, they may miss everything else about them. On their sophomore and breakthrough album, Big Echo, the Morning Benders built a compelling sound of jangling guitars and reverb saturated harmonies that was steeped in decades old influences, while remaining firmly tethered to the contemporary musical moment. This melding of past and present continues to inform the band's work as POP ETC, but the rock based sounds of the '60s have been supplanted by the canned beats and [...]

Popping Up is our recurring look at new artists making noise on the music landscape. Because, hey — Madonna and Britney were once unknown, too. Technically speaking, POP ETC is not a new band. Sure, the name might not ring any bells, but its members are no strangers to the musical world. Rather, POP ETC is a reinvention and reimagining of the Morning Benders , the indie rock outlet most known for their 2010 breakout hit, Big Echo . Same members, same songwriters, same saccharine vocal harmonies — and that’s about [...]

Following an 18-year hiatus, soul singer Bobby Womack returns to top this week's list of new releases with The Bravest Man In The Universe , which easily ranks among the legendary singer's best albums to date. Following the approach he took with the late Gil Scott-Heron’s excellent final record, producer and XL Recordings head Richard Russell, along with co-producer and Blur/Gorillaz-leader Damon Albarn, adds moody electronics and trip-hop beats to create, what our Music Director, Don Yates, calls "masterful set of electro-soul" whose "spacious, modern production makes a surprisingly effective showcase for Womack’s grainy, deeply soulful vocals [...]

For those of you who missed the news, the Morning Benders have made the bold decision to change their band name to POP ETC back in March. Their reasons were addressed in public letter to fans along with a free mixtape of warm, chiffon-soft electronic tunes on their new website. Running with the concept of turning over a new leaf, POP ETC now reveals "Live It Up," their first song off of their forthcoming self-titled album (slated for June 12 on Rough Trade). The song's band-directed clip features their lead vocalist intensely emoting underneath bouncing lights [...]

I was skeptical about The Morning Benders changing their name to POP ETC and starting down a new, different sounding path. I didn't know what to expect or if Chris Chu was just going through some musical identity crisis (not true), yet after talking to some friends at Beggars they told me to prepare for an exciting new sound. They then went on to tell me that Chu made a great modern-day pop record, somewhat tired of people paying lipservice to The-Dream and Dr. Luke but falling short. Challenge [...]

Bad Life are really making a name for themselves putting out some of the best electro and techno sounds around at the moment - they were the people to introduce MAO for starters. And now they are rounding off a pretty damn big year by putting out a compilation of some of their finest output from the likes of ZZT , autoKratz , Attaque , TWR72 , Burns , NT89 , and more. We've got a few of the highlights for your pleasure below, but if this doesn't start [...]
POP ETC (formerly The Morning Benders) have got a new sound and a new video. "Live It Up" is another taste of the band's forthcoming eponymous album that will be released on June... Read the rest on Speakerboxxx.com
We loved The Morning Benders and were a bit sad when they announced they were gonna change their name and especially their style of music. No more catchy indierock with tight guitars, like this great track ! But we were curious how POP ETC would sound like. Listen to the result in the above video: it's a soft and laidback pop track with a catchy chorus and a lot of auto tune. But just like Sufjan Stevens, these guys perfectly know how to handle auto tune and make a very cool pop tune. [...]

New music video from the band formerly known as The Morning Benders.

POP ETC is the new name for San Francisco band The Morning Benders whose 2010 sophomore album Big Echo gained them a lot of buzz and new fans. But, with this new name comes a new, more R&B-influenced sound. This is always a risky move for a new band to do, especially after a lot of people loved their last album. But, this is kind of becoming the band's thing. Their debut album was simple, Shins-knockoff indie rock, but with Big Echo they went a more colorful, experimental route, [...]
