Seattle's Telekinesis, otherwise known as Michael Benjamin Lerner, has an ear for dreamy pop music. With the help of Death Cab For Cutie guitarist Chris Walla, Lerner released his self-titled-with-exclamation-p oint debut Telekinesis! via Merge Records on April 7th. Vor einen Jahr waren sie "Band To Watch" bei Stereogum, Ende April ist ihr Label-Debüt bei Merge Records herausgekommen. Ein kleines, unbeachtetes Indie-Highlight. Star Wars-Fans werden diese Band lieben. Telekinese ist nämlich die Fähigkeit, Gegenstände durch Willenskraft zu bewegen. "Awkward Kisser" vermag mein Herz zu bewegen, mittels Schallwellen allerdings. Produziert wurde die Platte übrigens von Chris Walla (Death Cab for Cutie, The Decemberists, Tegan & Sara). Mannequins are generally underused in indie rock videos. Or just any rock videos really. This track, more reliant on persistent percussive piano than the previously publicized and satisfyingly crunchy guitar-led anthem "Coast Of Carolina," shows Telekinesis ' Michael Lerner to have a much broader range than we assumed based on that first preview single. "Coast Of Carolina" made us think, oh, we don't know, insert good lo-fi band name here. But "Awkward Kisser," makes us think Ben Folds , and not because of Mr. Lerner's eyeglasses. It's not uncommon for me to wake up with any number of Telekinesis songs in my head, such is the pull of its contagious pop. That was the case this morning, and wouldn't you know ... a new video for Awkward Kisser , from the full-length debut Telekinesis! , is out. Remember: Telekinesis plays the Rhythm Room on May 20 as support for Margot & the Nuclear So and Sos.
