KISS' third and shortest-lived guitarist, Mark St. John, passed away on April 5 from a brain hemorrhage. Replacing Vinnie Vincent in the band on their album Animalize , St. John was forced to retire from guitar playing due to Reiter's Syndrome, which is a form of arthritis that causes swelling in the hands and arms. Bruce Kulick replaced him in KISS. He did improve for a period of time, and was in a band called White Tiger with ex-Black Sabbath singer David Donato. He also teamed up with Peter Criss in the Mark St. John Project, [...]
First Place Winner - photo by Gabe Second Place Winner - photo by brianne Third Place Winner - photo by firehop After much debate it was decided that the staff has interacted with too many of the photographers in our photo contest and thus to eliminate any potential bias we would have a celebrity select each of our contest winners. Although we will be unable to provide you with Paula Abdul or Randy [...]
I interviewed filmmaker Stephen Kijak in Austin during SXSW last month (my review of his music doc Scott Walker: 30 Century Man will be out in the next few days, in time for you East Coasters to catch it at the Tribeca Film Festival in May), and in the midst of a long rambling discussion of basically every single bit of music he and I had listened to in our entire lives, he asked if I was familiar with Wrecking Ball by Emmylou Harris. Now, despite my anti-country black-nail-polish youth, I got the [...]
Of all the things Keith Richards has ingested in his life, it turns out his father is NOT on that extensive and long list. We held back on republishing claims from NME that Keith had snorted his fathers ashes until the furor had calmed down, thinking that the claims proximity to April Fool's Day was a bit too "fishy". Well it appears that we were right not to jump on this particular bandwagon, though just about every mainstream press outlet appears to have been sucked into this apparent joke. "It was an off-the-cuff remark, a joke, [...]

From the San Francisco Chronicle: Music fans will now be able to download songs from iTunes and play them on any digital music player - not just the iPod -- after Apple Inc. and EMI announced a new deal Monday. The new deal also means that consumers will be able to share the songs with their friends, without restrictions. In a press conference in London, Apple CEO Steve Jobs and record label EMI said that the record label will sell tracks that are free of digital rights management technology, or [...]

Ahhh nothing says rock 'n' roll like naked girls! Yep, you heard me right. Heart Breakers is an older neighborhood gentlemen's club and the manager, DJB , formerly ran the Rock Shop here in Milwaukee. I had all sorts of concerns and questions going into this one, but hey, we gave it a shot and had a damned good time. The venue is on the smaller side, but I have to hand it to DJB and the staff at Heart Breakers: It sounded damned good. And when going [...]
U2's The Edge has announced an auction of music memorabilia to benefit Gulf Coast musicians affected by Hurricane Katrina. Among other items, The Edge has ponied up his 1975 Gibson Les Paul Custom and his 1958 Gibson ES-295. Also featured in the Auction are items once belonging to Elvis, Buddy Holly, Bob Dylan and other music icons. More info can be found at the Music Rising Website and on [...]
Jeff Barringer Interviews Paul Collins and The Beat One of the world's great levelers is certainly the internet, and if that be true the music industries great leveler has got to be MySpace.com. Forget all the high school(and junior high) hijinks and shenanigans, if you really look deep into it's soul MySpace is an incredible resource for the music journalist, whether they are writing for Rolling Stone or writing for their own blog. In the old old days of web journalism, before the internet, to hook up with a band [...]
Well it looks like we are finally coming to the ends of our memory cards. Best I can determine is that we (the club kingsnake staff) got photos of at least 58 bands or musicians in one form or another (and Dan Rather) during SXSW 2007, as well as several hours of HD video, numerous interviews, and a whole lot of articles. We still have a lot of little things let to publish and post but the majority of our SXSW experience is now online. Enjoy! Pubic Enemy [...]
First Place Winner - photo by Gary Miller Second Place Winner - photo by Jay West club kingsnake is now accepting submissions for its 2007 concert photo contest. Last year's contest attracted over 500 photo entries. This year we timed the announcement to occur during Austin's SXSW festival and handed out about 1000 flyers to music photojournalists from around the world. The 2007 contest will be handled a bit differently, with monthly winners instead of weekly, and with larger prize incentives to [...]
