(only like 4 years)... as far as i can tell anyway, youtube and the official site only turn up 4 videos, including the 2 from yesterday (plus a cameo in aesop rock's "coffee" )... beginning with the sunset tree , which certainly makes some sense. did i miss any? this year woke up new

The Mountain Goats is actually John Darnielle, although, live, The Mountain Goats are John Darnielle and Peter Hughes. However, Darnielle's more important and has been The Mountain Goats ever since 1991. Snagging his name from the Screaming Jay Hawkins' song, "Big Yellow Coat," Darnielle began his longspanning musical project in Claremont, CA while attending Pitzer and working as a nurse. Sixteen years later, he now has over a dozen albums under his belt along with collaborations with the great John Vanderslice and The Bright Mountain Choir. Darnielle's voice reminds me of James Blunt's, especially on "New Monster Avenue." [...]

The strings in Moon Over Goldsboro make it. Darnielle's pathetic on Half Dead (Is it wrong for a breakup album to be pathetic - or is it a prerequisite?). Woke Up New is a sing-a-long of despair. I knew I would miss something whilst I was ill. Namely, the video for the first single off the Mountain Goats' Get Lonely , "Woke Up New." Directed by Rian Johnson ( Brick ), it's a gorgeous little film, full of ingenious camera trickery, that compliments the song wonderfully. Also note that bassist Peter Hughes is wearing all his favorite suits therein. We approve!

I swear I've been to a mountain goats show before, but they opened for someone else and I don't recall much about their performace. After seeing their new video for Woke Up New, now I wish I had paid more attention. If I recall correctly, the show they played pulled a fairly large crowd, so hopefully they'll return soon. "Get Lonely" is every bit as assured as its predecessor, "The Sunset Tree", but the mood is entirely different.
