Looking back on the year 2012, I've realized that you, as you read this, and I, as I write it, we are both survivors. We have averted forces which no doubt would have colluded to destroy us. The Mayans, the Fiscal Cliff, or Honey Boo Boo Child. And the fact that our national anthem has not been replaced with "Call Me Maybe" should alone be proof that someone up there likes us. And yet, as I finalized my list of the best videos by Portland bands, I noticed the recurring themes of birth, death and rebirth or afterife. [...]
We're at the end of the first year of Seen Your Video , and there's been an explosion of talent in music videos in 2012. Unlike some years that have been dominated by an elite group of ultra-talented directors, this year saw a much more diverse collection of incredible visual artists and a swarm of new talent taking center stage. Among the up-and-coming directors that impressed me this year are Emily Kai Bock , who's received much acclaim for her aesthetically cutting-edge work and Ninian Doff , who's incredibly inventive concept videos [...]
Someone once told me I look like The Shins' frontman James Mercer. I wish someone would tell me I'm as clever as him. Or as clever as Daniels, the directing team that apparently can't be stopped. What a video. The Shins - "Simple Song" from DANIELS on Vimeo .

Yesterday it was announced that The Shins would be the next in a seemingly growing line of indie-centric musical guests on Saturday Night Live , for better or for worse. Assuming the vocal majority of "nothing is good enough for me" internet commentators don't decide to unsympathetically rip them apart because they are who they are, the performance hopes to be solid. Check out the new video from the band's huge lead-single "Simple Song" below, starring a dead James Mercer and his jerkoff family.

Some bands fade away with time, and the idea of them making a comeback just seems silly . Other times, a comeback is welcome . And then there are times when it feels like the band never left in the first place. That's the case with The Shins . They haven't released an album since 20072s Wincing The Night Away , but the transition into Port Of Morrow , coming March 20th, seems natural, like, "Oh. New Shins. Of course." Maybe it's because James Mercer's familiar voice has stayed a part of our playlists through his [...]
