"I wish no public service of any kind." Those were George Carlin's wishes regarding his death. Burial rites and, well, rites of any kind, were exactly the kind of befuddlement that he would-and did-cut down to size with his unapologetic wit. Given the nature of the media and the congregation of the Internet today, publishing [...]
This week on The Needle Drop , we delve into two artists that have little to do with one another, or at least it appears to be that way on the surface. First up, we've got some wordy country-rock from Silver Jews. Lookout Mountain, Lookout Sea is something Gram Parsons fans will probably tip their hats to, and students of Nick Cave and Lou Reed might do the same. We've also got some cuts from the new Girl Talk album, Feed the Animals . Mash-up artist Greg Gillis has done it again [...]
It starts off with thunder and ends in a reverb-drenching, delayed dream rain. And in the middle of thunder and rain, "Disengaged," the first song off of Grouper's latest album, Dragging a Dead Deer Up A Hill . The album is not as Sisphyean as the title suggests. It's feet are firmly planted in bedroom pop and melancholy. "Heavy Water/I'd Rather Be Sleeping," showcases open-chord acoustic guitar, a soft drone, and Liz Harris' voice. The words are hard to make out, but the feeling of a deep current pulling one under water [...]
In terms of music, the United States has a lot going for it, but it's pretty obvious that Europe is holding it down in terms of dance music and electronica. France's Danger may come off as mere house music, but there's so much more going on. A subtle tremolo on the entire track, rich 8-bit melodies, and a slightly overmodulated rhythm track make more than four to the floor. There are some stylistic similarities with Jusice, and even though electro fans would probably love God to intervene on music's behalf--again--and give us another [...]
Brooklyn's Forest Fire have signed to New York's Catbird Records , and the label is releasing the band's first LP for free. Well, free? The label is putting fans and listeners on an honor system that allows them to pay whatever they wish for a download of the album. It's a move that's become known as "pulling a Radiohead," but if we're lucky, it will soon become known as "starting a Forest Fire." this video has become one of the most popular this week on YouTube.... i first remember George Carlin ( OBIT / official / wiki ) as the crazy-looking comedian on some old vinyl albums that my mom had. he actually looked funny. but for a kid like me it was not easy to understand all that adult humor with all those bad words. i knew that george was kinda like the white guy version of
London's Animals Talking sound like they've been hitting the studio a bit, and they're getting some catchy results. The band has three new tracks up on their MySpace, and the rock quartet doesn't sound like they've lost anything in their transition to a clearer mode of recording. Their songs still recall the rigidly danceable features of groups like Wire while pulling off the melody and nonchalance of The Strokes. As everyone has probably heard already, one of our lifetime's comedic titans, George Carlin , died yesterday afternoon. I grew up in a very Catholic family growing up and Mr. Carlin provided me with the balance that I needed in regards to religion, moral issues, and life in general. I remember plopping down in front of the TV as a young kid watching him, Eddie Murphy and Richard Pryor. Was I too young to watch these? Probably, but I like to think that Carlin's stand-up routines made me a more open-minded [...]

For a duo with almost indistinguishable lyrics, Allegories have a lot to say. Seriously, how many bands come out with a narrative of their albums? However, this tale of public fornication, acrobatics, and vegetable caverns doesn't lend much clarity to this opaque LP, but transparency doesn't seem to be in the interests of this Ontario duo. Rather than place their instruments into an easily separable mix, Allegories melds everything together into a wall of sound that is part ambient, part pop, and completely dynamic. Like any album that would fit under the [...]
