Frank Ocean - Channel Orange // “What was your favourite part?” A workmate inquired about my recent trip home to Oz. One might think a typical answer would include “sunshine, family, the beach” etc. Well… 1) The sun greeted me with 3rd degree burns within four hours of my arrival. 2) Family time is great, but is always accompanied by a heavy dose of Christmas dysfunction, which perhaps has nothing to do with Christmas at all. 3) The ocean is full of life-threatening predators that you suddenly become [...]

Some wise writer at The FADER wrote earlier this month that trying to sum up a year in music is something like "trying to talk about all the times you tied your shoelaces". That metaphor feels pretty on point, especially since I started whittling my list down from a solid 200 songs, and 100 albums or so, all of which I thought were fantastic. The resulting list you'll find below feels more than a little arbitrary, if not altogether a lost cause. But hey, the whole idea is appreciation-showing love, giving thanks, and hopefully handing off at least a few [...]
A couple of years back, we started what's become something of a December tradition on Flavorpill — looking at the year's most attention-grabbing music videos. As we noted the first time we did this, the decline of MTV and the rise of the internet has liberated directors to make videos that would have been unthinkable even a decade ago, and those same factors have also made it harder than ever for any given band's video to get noticed. The result is a seemingly endless stream of clips that play the NSFW card for all they're worth, and it's always interesting [...]

photo by Morgen Schuler Dum Dum Girls released a flowery new video for their song "Lord Knows" from the End of Daze album. In the video, Dee Dee, who came into our studios for an acoustic set a few weeks back, rocks a serious witch vibe. Kids these days. On another note, Dee Dee sent out an email to fans that she will start creating Spotify mixes! To suggest themes email info@wearedumdumgirls.com with the subject "mix me". Frank Ocean is famous for using his sexuality to 'get more buzz.' He basically said that one time he fooled around with another dude and fell in love, and then piggybacked that to the promise land, making every1 cover him like he was 'doing something new' even though plenty of artists have already come out in every genre. Anyways, I don't really 'get' his music, why it was so highly rated, and why any1 cares. They lyrics aren't even that #SWAG or #DEEP. They don't get me #HORNIE at all. Anyways, he has this [...]
Shortly after his performance on SNL, Frank Ocean dropped off the video for his song Pyramids which is off of his debut album Channel Orange . Would definitely love to see some visuals for some other tracks on that album as well but we shall see what comes forth.

Live performances exist as much for the artist as they do for the fan. It gives the artist an opportunity to elaborate on his or her work, embellishing and improvising it for the moment to create almost an entirely new work. Last weekend's edition of Saturday Night Live brought us a particularly notable live performance by arguably the most romantic Odd Future member, Frank Ocean , performing "Pyramids" and "Thinkin Bout You", off his critically acclaimed album, Channel Orange . With riveting instrumental support from John Mayer , who is featured on the album, Ocean draws us into [...]

You don't have to come here to know of Frank Ocean's performances on Saturday Night Live 's premiere last weekend because I've assumed you've seen them already. However, Ocean did release his official video for "Pyramids," which does feature SNL assistant John Mayer . It's nearly eight minutes long, which isn't that long when you remember the actual song is about 10 minutes long. Watch it below.
So this is a conflicting video on several levels... I don't really have the time or inclination to get into them but there ARE conflicts! I assure you.
