Dawes and Blitzen Trapper both build songs out of the stuff of American myth. Dawes sing in voices tinged with twang and dust; there are strumming guitars, tinkling pianos, and solid rhythm sections. Their songs are simple stories of love and loss, home and away, roots and rootlessness. The fuzzy electric guitar melodies sometimes evoke Neil Young, and multi-part harmonies add gravity and a sense of cohesion to the appealing looseness-the chorus of "When My Time Comes" almost rolls into gospel territory. Dawes usually doesn't move faster than a pleasant lope, but when things [...]

The good news just keeps on rolling in. The next few months will be absolutely insane. I'm officially ending my aggression towards those that were able to attend SXSW this year. Yesterday brought news of a slew of bands making their way to STL and today brings news of a few more making the trek. Off Broadway is the big winner today as they announced that Blitzen Trapper (pictured above) will be stopping [...]

After following this local Portland band's success these past few years and watching them go from a completely unknown band to one that was heralded as the best live show in town this past year, we finally got to witness the amazing boys of Blitzen Trapper personally. They performed before a sold out crowd last month here at the Doug Fir Lounge. As we anticipated, the band played their bread and butter songs, "Furr", "Black River Killer", and "Sleepytime In The Western World", which are the band's sweet spot, nice slower story telling folk songs. However, led [...]
Blitzen Trapper's modern day murder ballad "Black River Killer" follows a faceless man through an old timey world filled with rivers, roads, and jail cells. The music is fantastic, the production top notch, and if my opinion means anything to you, I order you to watch it now. Hope you like it.

This should be a great one. Blitzen Trapper 's Furr (Sub Pop) was one of my favorites from last year, and the Portland band has a new EP, Black River Killer , out on Oct. 6 (eponymous mp3 below). Songwriter Eric Earley says here that the EP is completely separate from Blitzen Trapper's upcoming album. A snippet: So there's been alot of questioning about the songs on the BRK EP, thought i'd do some explaining... Silver Moon is near four years old, recorded around three times in differing formats, [...]

Blitzen Trapper - Black River Killer
I'm not quite sure what to make of this track from Blitzen Trapper's upcoming EP, to be released on August 25th. And the music video? It has its odd moments, though these are nothing compared to the music video released for Jose Gonzales' "Killing for Love" last year (so creepy!). I'm glad Blitzen Trapper is making new music, but I'm not sure I'll be chilling out with the EP on my drive to Ohio like I did with Wild Mountain Nation . Furr , though, will probably make the cut. "Black River Killer" music [...]
Blitzen Trapper will be releasing a new 7 song EP on August 25th via Sub Pop. Black River Killer EP will contain the song "Black River Killer" which is taken from the band's incredible full-length Furr . Serial Killers and anything dark in nature has always piqued my curiosity, so the lyrics of the track make me feel all warm and fuzzy-like. You really can't go wrong with lyrics like "her mouth was sewn shut, but her eyes were still wide...gazing through the fog to the other side" can you? Check out the video for the [...]
I've been pretty big into Blitzen Trapper for a while now, but saw them live for the first time last night at the Picador. I was of course amazed and impressed and was left with a newfound love for Eric Earley. Of course I was super bummed I didn't get Sunday Pitchfork tickets to see them again, but thanks to slb, I discovered some Pfork vids. Check out a funny little interview about B.T. fashion. Here's one of my favorite tracks off of Furr (their first album on [...]

Aye, he's back! Please read this roundup in the voice of LeRoy, everyone's favorite hat wearing, green footed Rodeo instructor. And we swear that one of these days we'll finally get some sort of small link section so that we can write a short blog post without it looking incredibly awkward. - Time Magazine has a feature on the 50 most Authentic American Experiences , and Oregon is represented by Willamette Week 's very own MusicfestNW . Not so shabby, huh? Nowhere on the list? SXSW. Take that, Austin! [...]

Here's the brand new video for Blitzen Trapper's "Black River Killer" which appears on the band's 2008 Sub Pop Records release Furr and is one of my favorite tracks from one of my favorite albums from last year. I'm still hoping we can get these guys to come put on show for us here in Charlottesville one of these days. As an added bonus, I've thrown in a listening track for "Gold for Bread" (also found on Furr ) and I've also included [...]

A lot of things going on this week. For some reason Beck is on his game lately doing things that no other artist consider doing, but maybe he's just smarter than everyone else. Beck started a new section to go along with his Record Club. It's called Irrelevant Topics & he basically interviews other artists about whatever he feels like talking about. This week it's Tom Waits & it's a fascinating read if you've got the time. Trent Reznor changed his mind & decided to play more shows [...]
Blitzen Trapper 's last year full length effort " Furr "was with out a doubt their best work as of yet, as well as one of the best album put out in 2008. Since I first listened to it a long, long time ago, the Dylan-esque "Black River Killer" has always struck out to me as the definite stand out amongst the 12 other gems. The Daniel Elkayam directed video shot for it doesn't fall any shorter as well, impressing us with its stunning visual work, as well as with the amount of logistics poured into it - considering [...]
