Adverts and music go together like cold and flu medicine. You don't really want either of them but they're sometimes shoved down your throat anyway, and if you consume them recreationally there's probably something wrong with you. The trend recently has just been for TV commercials to half-inch a recognisable tune - whether it's the 'YMCA' or the Oompa-Loompa song - and simply sing the companies name to the tune. In those cases (you'd hope at least) the original songwriters are probably compensated in some way. Maybe with cheap car insurance [...]
"In a statement released after Beach House publicly protested the ad, a VW spokesperson said the corporation was seeking "something from the dream-pop genre" for the ad. Clearly, few people who would eventually see the ad are going to understand the cultural context of "dream-pop" or even know who Beach House are. This is the point. While for most, the music serves as pleasant-enough wallpaper for a weepy car ad, for a certain target demographic, it's a dog whistle. DDB is betting that those who do recognize the style of music will ideally transfer that positive feeling-- hip yuppie nostalgia-- [...]
When ad agency DDB was contracted by Volkswagen to to create a new commercial, conceptually, the ad was built around Beach House 's song, "Take Care". After all, what's the big deal? Indie bands selling their music to commercial producers is now part of the indie business model. The music biz ain't what it used to be, there's no MTV or radio to promote music. So fiscally, music revenue is dependent upon unit sales (which are down in the era of the download), touring, merchandising, and soundtracking the sales of other products [...]

Last year, a good friend of mine was officially hired in a New York hospital as a full-time nurse. As a congratulatory gift, I compiled a "nurse mixtape" collecting all the songs I knew that name checked aspects of her new profession. At the time I wanted to publish an edition of Mixtape Madness that used the songs from the mix but I wanted to wait until the official National Nurse Week to do so. Well, it turns out that was last week so rather than wait another 51 more, I figure the hell with it, let's roll out a [...]
Deathandtaxesmag and diffuser.fm have some info on why the new Volkswagen ad uses a song that sounds remarkably just like Beach House. Beach House was approached to license the song but they refused. So the ad agency apparently hired someone to recreate the song. This is what Beach House has to say on the matter: "Hate to have to address this VW ad story during our release week, but an important part of information wasn't included in the news story. The ad agency actively tried to license "take care" from [...]
