Thao Nguyen appears to have ditched her bag of hammers for a new bag of tricks. And it's a nice departure as her voice is now flanked by some equally spirited music. In other words the Get Down Stay Down aren't playing second fiddle (!) for once. Check them out! As a partially Vietnamese person, I have a soft spot for indie rocker Vietnamese chicks. But Thao actually can play guitars and banjo like a real musician and sing with a sort of haunting soft smoothness. Everyone seems to really enjoy Thao Nguyen [ Myspace ], but I can't really seem to classify what she does. The San Francisco-based musician (who tours and records as Thao and the Get Down Stay Down ) sounds an awful lot like Cat Power , but I think she's quite awesome and could just care less what we "should" call her and her posse.
