The Flaming Lips are everywhere this week with the support of their crazy album, Embryonic . My friend Theo had this to say about their album, "I think it's safe to say that Steve Drozd is back on the smack and everyone else upped the dosage. This album is fucking crazy." Don't live in LA? Don't have tickets to their secret Myspace show? You can stream their live show , here . The Flaming Lips-See the Leaves [mp3] [...]
Embryonic , the latest album by The Flaming Lips (#12!) , has renewed my faith in the band. This new album pushes boundaries in the way that Clouds Taste Metallic did 14 years ago. [CTM continues to by my 5 year old's favorite disc to put on when my wife is out of the house]. This is their biggest release since The Soft Bulletin . Check out Embryonic's cataclysmic closer "Watching the Planets" from Wednesday's "The Tonight Show With Conan O'Brien."

Seriously, who the hell saw this one coming? To be perfectly honest, when news surfaced a few months back about the new Flaming Lips album Embryonic I found myself pretty disinterested. Of course, I love The Soft Bulletin , but that was, like, 10 years ago - an eternity here at the end of the “ download->listen->recycle bin ” decade. Beyond a handful of great singles, I was never that into the entirety of Yoshimi , and I walked away from At War With The Mystics after one [...]

Embryonic is out, Conan's a living legend, and the Flaming Lips brought the gong banging, fuzzed out vocal having, spaced out extravaganza known as "Watching The Planets" to The Tonight Show last night to teach us the art of the freak out. Thanks guys. This performance is so good and so energetic that might you wonder if you have tuned into an attempt to cement icon status outside of the underground hero medals they already proudly wear. They continue to amaze and deserve the best in show ribbon I'm awarding them right now. Watch this and tell [...]
Embryonic is out, and this is on it. The album version features Karen O--no such luck for the still-lovely Conan performance:
The Flaming Lips last visited The Colbert Report with their brand of weirdness. For The Tonigh Show with Conan O'Brien they did all of that and even came with a gong. The band performed 'Watching the Planets'. You can watch the performance below.Beck & the Flaming Lips -... Click the link to read more
Lots of interesting random stuff popping up this morning. Figure that means it's time for another Odds and Ends post. Just a day after I wondered out loud on Twitter if we might expect to see Mew in Chicago in early December comes confirmation that the band will be playing at the Metro on Monday, December 7th. Tickets go on sale via eTix this Saturday at noon Central. NPR continues its recent streak of scoring high-profile, exclusive album streams with two big "gets" - [...]
A day before the scheduled release of The Flaming Lips upcoming 12th studio album, Embryonic , the Oklahoma legends brought their alternative psyche waves to the Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien stage to perform the abrasively noisy and adventurous "Watching the Planets." Considering the Tonight Show is still in it's, well, embryonic stage, seeing a show so invigorating and energetic can be considered nothing more than a delightful change of pace, especially for those who decide to trudge right through [...]

The Flaming Lips have already done Colbert in support of their recently released, return-to-freak LP Embryonic , but there's something particularly amusing about seeing the Coyne company bring the gong-banging soundtrack to a bad-acid flashback "Watching The Planets"' to NBC's 11:30 time slot. But then again, the network's viewers were just slogging through the 10PM-slot mindfuck of passing off Jay Leno as "comedy," which is even trippier. Wayne's collapse in a put-on '60s psych stupor at song's end being immediately succeeded by Conan's sunny salutation is fun, but not as much as the juxtaposition of this [...]

Conan has had one hell of a musical lineup this week, kicking off Monday with Grizzly Bear and special guest Victoria Legrand . While I was hoping everyone's favorite Bear band would perform their achingly beautiful new track "Slow Life" off of the New Moon soundtrack (also featuring Victoria), but played it safe with the sure-fire "Two Weeks". Last night, however, The Flaming Lips were in full-on new album mode, promoting the distortedly dark Embryonic by playing "Watching The Planets" - a song on the [...]
The Flaming Lips are in full-on promo mode for their new album, Embryonic, and they showed up to perform "Watching the Planets" on Conan O'Brien's show last night (Oct. 13). The band was bolstered by a new guitarist and an auxiliary gong player for this performance. As most reviews have noted, the tone of Embryonic is darker and more krautrock driven than the Flaming Lips' recent excursions. "Watching the Planets" continues in this vein, building a big wall of distorted vocals and keyboards over a circuitous guitar riff while Wayne [...]
