"Sure, we wanna party after the show. You like lemon and honey?" Holy Ghost! frontman Alex Frankel was downing tea between every song last night at Mercury Lounge, clearly not feeling so well, and I don't think the band have played very many shows yet anyway. There were other problems too. More than one false start, and Guitarist Chris Maher broke like three strings during their short set, pretty amazing given the light, Nile Rogers style rhythm playing. So I'm not gonna be too hard on their performance. That said, but I [...]
If the singer in your band suddenly died, would you call it quits? New Order did the opposite, proving in an endless stream of brilliant music that Joy Division was merely a warm-up on the path to pop greatness. There's one important fact that should not be neglected when commemorating the 30-year anniversary of Joy Division's premature demise. Pretty much within a day of the suicide of Joy Division singer Ian Curtis, his remaining bandmates decided to carry on under a new name. Thus was born New Order, an ensemble that gradually shed Joy Division's rock essence to become [...]
On the record, New Order are not only one of the most influential groups in music history's timeline, but my personal favorite act, of all time. At this point I've probably heard everything they've ever recorded and 1983's Power, Corruption & Lies remains my vote for their best release. Confusion was one of the most important tracks New Order would produce over their nearly three decade long career, establishing the dancier side of the group's sound and inspiring the scope of electronic music through today. The heydey of nightlife, for [...]

Uh oh, someone's been geekin' out over Holy Ghost(!). Info about HG!, Arthur Baker, New Order, Nancy Whang, and Madonna wannabes along with mp3s after the jump.>> Holy Ghost has had a couple of my favorite remixes over the past few years, the most recent being Phoenix's Listzomania (officially titled the "Holy Ghost Loves Paris Remixomania" remix, now who's gonna pass *that* up?). Go find it now. They gave Moby's I Like to Move In Here the same treatment back last year. [...]

Here's the New Video for the long overdue New Single by Holy Ghost! , 'I Will Come Back'. An homage to NYC nightlife and a remake of New Order's 'Confusion' video. NYC pizza how I miss thee... That's also the legendary producer Arthur Baker reprising his role in the original New Order video. Apparently they met him a night out on the town and after telling him what they planned on doing he insisted on playing himself. They were gonna have [...]

Thinking back... Our first proper music review/rant on this blog came a couple years ago when these duo of New Yorkers released "Hold On" on DFA. Around the same time t hey played at the AKult Disco here in Boston's own Goodlife Bar . It was a packed house and quite a memorable one for me because it was the same day of the Dondi White Sneaker Release at Bodega. But to be honest the best memory of that night was the morning after, waking up in Chinatown to a massive New England Snow Storm. But let's talk music, [...]

Holy Ghost!: I Will Come Back . Directed by Ben Fries. New Order: Confusion
Directed by Ben Fries. Such a nice tribute to New Order.

Nobody would have guessed, in the years before MTV, that the children of the United States would surrender so much of their waking life to experimental art. But, during the 1980s, that's essentially what music videos were. And few videos were as unrelentingly experimental as those by Manchester band New Order. It didn't hurt that the band had actual, pedigreed artists at work behind the camera Blue Monday (1983) New Order's original video for "Blue Monday" was an early masterpiece. It brought war, Warhol, and video games to the nascent music video. [...]

Still no word on Hooky and the rest of New Order kissing an making up, there's the old saying that familiarity breeds contempt and that's obviously the case here. Apparently, they'll all be attending the premiere of 'Control' at The Cornerhouse in Manchester tonight, and for no other reason than that here's the classic Fac 93 in all it's extended 80's glory, plus the 2007 Dirty South reworking. mp3: new order - confusion (12" extended mix). mp3: new order - confusion (dirty south electrofried remix).
