Fresh from releasing his excellent debut record Battery through Matthew Herbert ‘s Accidental Records , an album described recently by The Line of Best Fit as "a meandering collage of old school hip-hop and floor-shaking electronics, equipped with a twisted pop coating,” we’re set to take a deeper look into the musical musings of Rowdy Superstar today. His album in a melting pot of eclectic influences and stylistic fusions, so we caught up with the grime-pop maestro and Atari Teenage Riot member [...]

I usually associate the summer months with fun, good times, and some of the best hip hop events our city has to offer, and the end of the summer of 2012 will be no exception. With our altogether-too-long winters, we have a limited time to enjoy the good weather and laid-back vibes of summertime in the city, but there's an array of upcoming shows, events, and festivals featuring both local and international acts to still look forward to before the mercury takes a dive. What better way to enjoy the final weeks of summer than with some boom-bap festivities? [...]

Not just another Tuesday… the lineup for the 2012 Treasure Island Music Festival is out of the bag!

This week, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (RRHOF) announced its list of inductees for 2012. To be eligible, performers must have recorded their first album 25 years ago, and exhibit criteria that demonstrate “influence and significance of the artists’ contributions to the development and perpetuation of rock and roll.” There are categories for sidemen, non-performers, and early influences, but the category of prestige is performer and that’s where this rambling is focused. The 2012 performer inductees include Guns ‘n Roses , The Beastie Boys , Red Hot [...]

Considered by some - including VH1 - to be the greatest rap song of all time, Public Enemy's "Fight the Power" was a groundbreaking song in the history of hip-hop. Flava Flav was an absolute nut back in the day, and Public Enemy as a whole had a flow unlike anything we hear today. And yes, the video is really fucking tight. Enjoy.

Pronti? Cypress Hill , Public Enemy e House Of Pain . Insieme. Un live che possiamo già da ora [...]
Twenty years ago, two albums addressed a man made environmental disaster and a racial divide that never seemed to close. You'd think these albums would sound dated today... "Nineteen eighty-nine! / The number another summer", Chuck D declared on "Fight the Power", the pinnacle song from that summer's most incendiary movie, Spike Lee's Do The Right Thing. But that summer was far from just another summer. The summer began with the protests in Tiananmen Square, which at first looked peaceful, but then turned shockingly violent as thousands of demonstrators were killed during China's brutal crackdown. Also during that summer, [...]

(Music Before 1990) Chuck D August 1 is something of an ignominious date in the history of popular music. It was on this day in 1971 that keyboardist Rick Wakeman joined the band Yes , in the process beginning a career-long effort to bring jousting on ice to rock 'n roll. Furthermore, on August 1 1980, Def Leppard made their United States debut, in the process contributing to our country's now-rampant obesity epidemic by instructing us to [...]
When Rocks Off received word last week that indie duo The Big Pink was embarking on a 2010 tour with NYC's A Place to Bury Strangers, our initial thought was, "Cool," followed closely by, "Ew." ... Continue reading "(Don't) Book 'Em, Dano: Artists Who Have Absolutely No Business Touring Together" >
