I have really been enjoying Victoria Bergsman's aka Taken By Trees's debut album East Of Eden recently. Besides having a lovely Scandinavian voice that lazily croons throughout every track (ahhh!..love) and besides being named after one of my favorite books , the album includes a rather creative take on the decades 9th best song . "My Boys," sticks with the repetition of the original but this time it sounds like hand claps and bongo drums. The insistent bass in the original becomes a synth key here, and the whole thing suggest tropicalia. [...]

Is it 'too gimmicky' to cover AnCo's "My Girls" from the perspective of a female? I just listened to the Taken By Trees cover of Animal Collective's "My Girls" except she changed the words to "My Boys." Seems like a 'gender switching' gimmick that happens a lot in modern music [via ' No Scrubs ' --> ' No Pigeons '] I feel like this song 'isn't as powerful' from a woman's perspective. The original 'My Girls' is a declaration of 'actually wanting to provide for your family' even though you are a male, and u naturally want to 'plant ur seed in tons of bitches' and abandon your [...]

Taken By Trees - My Boys
A song as nearly perfect as Animal Collective's "My Girls" probably doesn't need to be covered. But that didn't stop Taken By Trees from taking a stab at it. Victoria Bergsman not only regenders the original, but strips it down with some oddball Pakistani instrumentation and in the process renders it shockingly unique. Kudos for taking a risk that *gasp* actually pays off. We think you'll agree.
