She may be one of the best songwriters around, but Fiona Apple also knows her way around a great cover rendition. To wit: Apple has fearlessly taken on classics by the likes of Bill Withers, Jimi Hendrix, and The Beatles, while — perhaps with a bit of endearing trepidation — performed jazz standards made famous by Nina Simone, Billie Holiday, and other legends with ease, not to mention a little help from the great multi-instrumentalist Jon Brion on guitar. That said, nothing would beat hearing new material sometime soon. While we wait for Apple’s fourth studio album [...]

It's been an eternity since we had any new material from Fiona Apple. That streak continues here, but it is new music, in the form of a cover. "Why Try To Change Me Now" is a Cy Coleman cover from...
It's been some four years since the release of Fiona Apple's mildly controversial Extraordinary Machine , but if you consider the fact that that album was actually shelved for sometime before it got to the fans, it's been a little longer since we've had our hands on truly new Fiona Apple. Apple's cover of "Why Try to Change Me Now" was recorded for the That Was Then And This Is Now: A Tribute to Cy Coleman EP, and while it's not original [...]
Found this on Stereogum , and I gotta say it's pretty incredible. Sorry, no download's yet.

It can be overlooked it, but underneath all that angst, Fiona Apple has a beautiful voice. Here she is with a cover of "Why Try To Change Me Now?"

Fiona Apple seems like the sort who has issues with excess life drama. Also, she makes a living on it. So the Jon Brion/Mike Elizando fiasco surrounding her last release Extraordinary Machine may have been jarring, but also perversely satisfying? (I took psych as an undergrad, don't worry about it.) Either way, aside from a one-off soundtrack contribution to Tim Burton's Nightmare Before Christmas 3-D (and who knows when she hit the studio for that), and a couple of comfy interviews with friends Quentin Tarantino and Zach Galfiananananakis , it's been all quiet [...]
Everyone knows crazy girls make the hottest most interesting musicians, and Fiona Apple takes that cliche to the power of hyperbole. I'm a big fan of her musical meltdowns, even if she's reigned in the crazy ever so slightly over the last few years. This is her first scrap of new material since Extraordinary Machine vaulted through myriad hoops and controversies back in 2005. Apple is taking part in a tribute record for jazz and Broadway composer Cy Coleman . Her cover of Coleman's "Why Try To Change Me Now?" suits [...]
Fiona's cover of Cy Coleman will be featured on the tribute EP Then Was Then and Now is Now - A Tribute to Cy Coleman . Also includes tracks by Patty Griffinm Nikka Costa, Missy Higgins. gettin his fix - tabloid junkie.
