Nothing like a little suicide plot twist as we watch the Okkervil investigators take on the case, in room #1972. Interesting how the video plays out, with the band playing all parts. The great album, The Stage Names is out...

I'm really thrilled Austin based Okkervil River finally decided to make a video for this epic song, filled with melodic twists and aggressive choruses, off a, what seems, a clear winner so far of album of the year: Stage Names . As the video goes it's somewhat confusing with frame-in-frame action, or TV-in-TV if you wish. Frontman Will Sheff enters a room number 1972 (the year his favorite poet John Berryman committed suicide), where a man apparently killed himself through over-medication. There's policemen investigating, a young wedded couple having sex, a maid secretly enjoying a cigarette, [...]

I simply can't help but enjoy an upbeat folk song once in a while. Alas, can anyone? Although ostensibly a little off-center as far as my "standard-fare" goes, there's something about Okkervil River that draws me in. Their brand of Indie folk/rock has a little more of an edge than my favourite folk song of the year, Iron and Wine's untouchable "Boy With a Coin" . Somehow "Our Life Is Not A Movie Or Maybe" got a big ol' corporate intro, but eventually we get the goods: A suicide scene in hotel room #1972, and the suits (played/worn ably by Okkervil) investigate, then become the band, then become the film crew, and then their performance is on a TV which is on a TV which is on a TV ... shit, just got dizzy.
