Album #15: Embryonic by The Flaming Lips I really disliked the previous Flaming Lips record so I wasn't expecting much from Embryonic . I put it on for the first time without any idea of what I was about to hear and I proceeded to have my mind blown. This record may not be insanely good...but it is, without a doubt, totally insane. The new Flaming Lips video clip is a celebration of a back-to-nature/back-to-the-wom b fantasy. The one above is not that video. This is one of their previous one, but it give a sense of where the Watching the Planets video came from and what stands behind it. In my opinion though, it's much better. how would i describe the flaming lips?  front man wayne coyne is a cross betwixt jesus and doc brown from back to the future.  a haphazard hairy shaman leading us not into temptation, but delivering us from evil.  in a giant man-sized hamster ball.  musically they're a heady mix somewhere between religion and science, as much studio as instrument, as much sky as earth. embryonic is another musical paradigm shift from the lips, a steady transmogrification from noisy psyche rock to swooning technicolour pop to this, which references everything from miles davis' bitches brew to can, skip spence, [...]
