Graphic by Katherine Speelman. As the seasons change, so do our listening habits. In much the same way we stuff our summer clothes to the back of our closets come winter, the shift in temperatures and scenery prompts us to dig up old favorites at specific points throughout the year. Autumn, a season where the leaves begin to crackle and the heat of summer gives way to breeze and chill, is no exception. At One Thirty BPM, we've already begun plucking old fall favorites from our collections. This is our seasonal soundtrack. [...]

Cass McCombs, a dour, gifted, California born singer songwriter, cultivated his wandering sound (garage-folk, dollop of alt-country, as eclectic as Beck) living at campsites, on couches, and in cars from Northern California to Baltimore, Maryland. His lyrics weigh heavy but his delivery lightens the load. One of my favorites: "Cast out of eden/tricked by a snake/brother killing brother/the mighty flood's wake/glad I was not among/those kept off that boat/boy, they was much badder times/when the bible was wrote/then come slavery/then come curse/then come death-cloud/for the first birth/glad I was not living/I don't mean to gloat/but boy! Cass McCombs (whose MySpace says he is from Chicago/New York) was in NYC in July and August , playing two shows of his own (at Joe's Pub and Union Hall) and appearing unannounced ( sort of ) with Mike Bones at the Cameo on August 13th. At that gig, Cass played behind Mike Bones along with Doug Shaw aka Highlife aka Sleepy Doug Shaw from White Magic . He'll be back (or is he [...]
In honor of Labor Day-sadly I am not the only Mercury word drone spending his holiday at the office-we present you with this Cass McCombs music video for "The Executioner's Song" that is all about working. What great timing, since McCombs is in town tonight-performing at Mississippi Studios-which means you can watch this clip and then question him on his favorite knot-tying techniques. Sure, the hangman's noose is an old favorite, but I'm more of a highwayman's hitch type of guy. End Hits : I'd sell my soul [...]
'The Executioner's Song' taken from Cass McCombs' great record 'CATACOMBS.Directed by Aaron Brown

Cass McCombs fourth LP Catacombs is a stunner on its own (add it to yesterday's list of Domino's 2009 triumphs), and now is two-for-two in yielding beautifully compelling videos. Aaron Brown directs the clip for Cass's Norman Mailer- repurposing "The Executioner's Song," a crisply rendered portrait of a working man's passion for his job, showing the quiet details -- and then the one loud one -- that make his a creepy labor of love. (If you re-read that song title this will all make some sense, but even more so after you watch this video [...]
One of my favorite albums of the year is easily Cass McCombs' Catacombs , from which "The Executioner's Song" is drawn. Neo-folk weirdo Cass McCombs has just released a new video for his track "The Executioner's Song". Both the song and video are a pretty funny take on a grim gig.Check it out here:Cass McCombs' websiteCass McCombs' Myspace
Here's 'The Executioner's Song' taken from Cass McCombs' record 'CATACOMBS'
This video depicts a man driving his Dodge, pitchforking sticks, and otherwise getting an honest day of work done in the woods. All is benign until he starts to tie a noose. Death's face appears wholesome, sinister intentions cloaked not in black but in flannel. Depending on how much credit you want to give to Cass McCombs, he could be questioning the current politics of power: a system that hides its destructive greed behind what is plain and good. Produced by Aaron Brown, this song is off McCombs' recent album, Catacombs .

"Catacombs", último disco del trovador Cass Mccombs, ha sonado todo el verano en los reproductores de PlayGround, una y otra vez, meciendo nuestros sueños, durmiendo nuestras ansias en el calor estático del mediodía. "You Saved My Live", "Harmonia", y "The Executioners Song", han sido la banda...

Cass McCombs - "The Executioner's Song"
Cass McCombs' Catacomb s is one of our favorite records of the year thus forth. This Aaron Brown-directed clip for "The Executioner's Song" is its most recent to surface. Side note: how cute are those sheep when they run in slow-mo like that? Fuck, this video is sad and beautiful.
