I really liked the few tracks that Magistrates put out over the past 18 months -- Make This Work and Heartbreak were modern day beauties and after signing to XL Recordings, you would have thought that things couldn't have gotten any better. Well that's not the case unfortunately as it seems Christmas shopping, mince pies and the thought of mainstream success has gotten all but too much for the five piece from essex. Their MySpace message read... The End Magistrates is over, thanks for everything, we [...]

I first heard this band back in the summer of '08. I can't recall HOW I came across their music, but I definitely know WHY... As much as I identify as a hardcore Hip-Hop maniac, secretly I love great Pop tunes and Magistrates deliver that goodness. The lads from Essex are set to drop their debut single Heartbreak next month and will be performing in the New Musical Express Radar tour. NME, as a publication, has broken past groups such as The Strokes, The White Stripes, Franz Ferdinand and Artic Monkeys, so if the past repeats [...]

Introducing Magistrates, one of XL Recordings bands for 2009 (they've got so many promising artists this years it's a joke). It looks like Essex is fighting off it's bad reputation and chucking out some good music. I think the image of nagging blondes and souped-up hatchbacks will always remain in many of our hearts however. I saw these guys at the Camden Crawl last year and hoped to see them again at Bestival but the stage sank in the Glastonbury-esque mud! Heartbreak is the new single expected to drop in early May. [...]

Oi! Oioioi! Magistrates - Make This Work [...]
Magistrates hail from South Woodham, Essex. The lineup includes Paul Usher (vocals, keyboards), Mark Brandon (guitar), Thom Galbally (bass) and Andy Grant (drums). These guys play an interesting fusion of funk and pop. Imagine the early Prince, The Ohio Players and Kool & the Gang. It's funk of the scratchy and organic variety rather than the outrageous p-funk of say Funkadelic or Parliament. Chicken-scratch guitars and nervy cymbal clashes rather than outargeous basslines and synths. They have a distinctive lo-fi sound, probably down to the fact that 'Make This Work' was recorded in the guitarists bedroom on a [...]
