Video: [newport folk festival] Mavis Staples with Colin Meloy of The Decemberists

Gospel singer Mavis Staples played this past weekend's Outside Lands Festival in San Francisco. During her set Staples performed her track, " The Weight ", joined by Arcade Fire 's Win Butler . Butler sang backup vocals and played guitar on the song. Earlier this summer Staples also played the same song joined by the Decemberists ' Colin Meloy at the Newport Folk Festival . Tegan & Sara made their Newport Folk Festival debut over the weekend. "We made it to Newport!! What a lovely and quaint little place!" Tegan blogged upon arrival. "Rhode Island is adorable and reminds me a lot of the East Coast of Canada." The acoustic performance was the duo's only scheduled US gig this year. You can stream the set at NPR . The Newport Folk Festival took place this past weekend, with artists including Elvis Costello, M. Ward, Wanda Jackson and Emmylou Harris among the lineup. The Decemberists were also there, and Colin Meloy took the time to appear with Mavis Staples to perform a version of "The Weight" by the Band during the festival. You can see a shaky fan-shot clip of that song above, which captures the spirit of the collaboration despite the low budget feel—Staples in particular seems to be having a blast. [via CoS ]
