Filed under: Concerts and Tours , Exclusive , Q + A Yep Roc Records There have been baseball songs before, but the Baseball Project are the only indie-rock supergroup that writes songs exclusively about America's pasttime. Hatched during a boozy night in New York, the concept has since led to Scott McCaughey, Steve Wynn, Linda Pitmon and Peter Buck recording a pair [...]
Those who know me are aware that I am possibly the least athletic person on the planet. This is partly because of physical limitations: I was born with double vision (no Foreigner songs, please), since corrected by surgery, which impeded my ability to catch or throw a ball, frequently a large component of athletic endeavors. Similarly, I was, uh, gifted? cursed? with a relatively, well, stacked bod, and thus running is also more trouble than it's worth for me. And my generation of girls was not expected to be athletic, so there was no pressure on that end, either. [...]
Sure, the name The Baseball Project may not spill off the lips as easily as say, Franz Ferdinand, but with key guys like members like Steve Wynn (Dream Syndicate, Steve Wynn and the Miracle 3) and Scott McCaughey (Young Fresh Fellows, Minus 5, and R.E.M), along with REM's Peter Buck and foxy drummer Linda Pitmon, you can count on some a-tastic rock show action comin' your way. The band is gonna follow up last year's Frozen Ropes and Dying Quails with another record and a six-week US tour! Whoo-hoo! (But will Peter Buck be playing bass [...]
Scott McCaughey (Young Fresh Fellows/Minus 5) recently teamed up with fellow baseball fanatic Steve Wynn (Dream Syndicate/Steve Wynn and the Miracle 3) to form The Baseball Project along with Peter Buck (Minus 5/R.E.M.) on bass and Linda Pitmon (Miracle 3) on drums. They've got a pretty great album called Volume One: Frozen Ropes and Dying Quails coming out July 8th on the fabulous Yep Roc Records. 13 hits, every single one of 'em about baseball. You can read all about it and stream the whole record over at Yep Roc . The Baseball Project played [...]
I'm curious about this whole Baseball Project thing. Now, I know nothing about baseball (though I did once posses a Ken Griffey Jr. rookie card ), but there's certainly something special about attending a game. And the band is Peter Buck from R.E.M., Steve Wynn from Dream Syndicate and Portland's own Scott McCaughey from the Minus Five (and, y'know, R.E.M. also) playing songs about baseball mythology and history. People who know a lot about baseball are interesting to me. The Yep Roc-signed power pop group appeared on Letterman last Friday. Not a big deal for these guys individually, perhaps, [...]
