Slumberland Records has two 7"s they released in March that I'm excited about. The first one comes from the band Crystal Stilts. Are these guys 60's retro? Are they post-punk? Are they 80's jangle? Yes they are. Is it possible to say yes to ...
Crystal Stilts comprises of JB Townsend, Brad Hargett, Andy Adler, Frankie Rose and Kyle Forester and together they have created some of the most endearing music to hit the scene in many, many years. The group are currently on tour in and around the UK to promote their debut album Alight of Night (SG Review HERE) which was released last year in the US but only recently over here in the UK on their label Slumberland.

Women , the band, not the sex, will be playing Al's Bar in Lexington in March (3/16)...the season for good concerts. Women made out Top Album of July last year. The troupe from Alberta who broke onto the scene in a big way at SXSW last year and again with the release of their s/t album. Alongside Women is another of our favorite bands, Crystal Stilts , who received an 8.3 from Pitchfork . I could be wrong, but I [...]

Crystal Stilts "Prismatic Room"

The wet dream of a moody 80s teenager, New York's Crystal Stilts have their debut album 'Alight Of Night' given a UK release by Angular Recordings . Haphazard 6Ts girl group influenced garage rock meets nonchalant, sombre vocals, resulting in an amalgamation of Jesus & The Mary Chain, Velvet Underground, The Cure and Joy Division. Detached introspection rules, with vocals buried deep in the mix of trashy guitars, elastic band bass and not-played-by-a-drummer-really drums. Blessed with the ability to write catchy pop songs and then destroy them, Crystal Stilts satisfy without appearing too bothered about it. Brilliant. [...]
The grower. Crystal Stilts are one of a handful of acts re-energizing the legendary pop label Slumberland Records . Their debut album Alight of Night mixes fuzzy, vintage reverb jingles with simple propulsive drumming and aloof, deadpan vocals. I managed to check them out last month at a Part Time Punks event with label mates Cause Co-Motion! and was generally pleased. I know that's not the greatest compliment, but there you [...]

Though I thought they were great the first time I saw them, Crystal Stilts have gotten so much better over the last six months in which they've gigged almost constantly. I've seen them upwards of ten times since June (which is kind of crazy I know, I know) and it's been interesting to see them come out of their shell. Singer Brad Hargett not only smiled and talked to the audience Wednesday night at Le Poisson Rouge, but he even took the mike off the stand for a couple songs. [...]
The Crystal Stilts' debut LP Alight of Night will go down as being one of my very favorite records of the year. It's become my go-to record for walking around the city this Winter and it's given me even more appreciation for how well tremelo and reverb work together when covered in fuzz. When I saw them back in October they were amazing and life-affirming and damn well blew Vivian Girls right out of the water. But anyway, they've just released a brand new video for "Prismatic Room." I kinda wish they would have made a video for [...]
