What’s left to say about The Beastie Boys? The three Brooklynites were pioneers of Hip-Hop, dropping their genre-shaking Licensed to Ill the same year Larry Bird’s Celtics won their second [...] The post The Primer: 11 Beastie Boys Songs Everyone Should Know appeared first on The Smoking Section .

There are the essential albums that need to be in everyone's collection. There are the personal favorites, the ones that aren't highly acclaimed but still get played every once in a while. And then there are the albums that you stick in the back of your collection because you want to forget that you spent money on them. "Own It or Disown It" gives the writer the opportunity to look at such discarded albums and determine if they are diamonds in the rough or if they deserve to be used as mini-frisbees. [...]
Now that we've come to grips with the fact that we live in a world where a Beastie Boy died of cancer, it's time to move on in celebration. As with any celebrity death, the bright side of MCA's passing ... Continue reading ’

Most of you I'd believe at this point have heard of the untimely passing of Adam Yauch aka MCA who made up 1/3 of the Beastie Boys , this past weekend. It really came as a surprise even though the emcee has been battling cancer since 2009, and it really took a couple days to sink in. The reason it seemed to hit me more was because the Beastie Boys are what got me into hip hop music, as I'm sure plenty of others out there. The Beasties are no more, [...]

MCA had nothing to prove  Adam Yauch always seemed like the coolest guy in the room. He did not resemble a hip hop icon. He was the punk rocker in the Beastie Boys' early days, a billy goat bearded snowboarder in the late eighties/early nineties, a Buddhist and social activist for the remainder of his career, and then a middle-aged hip hop godfather who left before the curtain dropped. Yauch and his mates, Mike Diamond and Adam Horowitz, could have packed [...]
As someone who grew up with the Beastie Boys constantly playing on MTV, the group was one of few who left an indelible mark on my listening habits over the years. Growing up in Kentucky where the genre of choice was largely country music, the Beastie Boys essentially served as my transition in to real hip-hop. Ad Rock was the wild, party guy and Mike D always seemed like the more intelligent, laid-back member of the group, but MCA was just cool. He was always so confident in himself, giving off this energy that he was who he was and [...]

by BBG The first two hip hop records that I ever heard in full were nothing less than classics. I'll always remember having the cassette-dubs of the harder-than-hard leather-clad Run DMC, whose Raising Hell was the pinnacle of hip hop badassery. On the other side of the coin was the boyish, obnoxious, beer-soaked young lads responsible for the oh-so-fun Licensed to Ill . It was the perfect yin-and-yang, but I latched onto the Beastie Boys more, partly due to their cartoonish antics [...]
The first Between the Grooves series of 2012 focuses on the new Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees Beastie Boys' postmodern, sample-heavy masterpiece Paul's Boutique (1989). First, Jacob Adams explores how "To All the Girls" establishes a deceptively mellow vibe only to have "Shake Your Rump" groove the listener into a funky reality. Nineteen eight-nine. Only 10 years after the Sugarhill Gang introduced the world to hip-hop, a genre of music only previously heard by a small group of urban kids. About 15 years before a Pittsburgh DJ named Greg Gillis (AKA Girl Talk) would create [...]
