by Black Bubblegum Golden Triangle with the "W" (Photo by Van Ditthavong ) To the victor go the spoils and on 3/20 at the Dickies Battle Of The Bands in Austin, the winner was the feisty Golden Triangle and the spoils were TEN Gs of cold hard cash... or at least a really big posterboard check certifying said payment. I ( Black Bubblegum ) was one of the "judges" (hate that term, everything is [...]
Mediocre buzz bands? Irrelevant blog posts? Grainy iPhone pictures? No thanks. If SXSW has produced anything of value it's this live performance which finally unites The Wu Tang Clan and The Black Lips. I was either gonna end with "prepare to GZA in your pants" or "Bring Da Rawkus" but I think I'll go with - I just hope GZA doesn't get naked and make out with the guitarist...
Yes, you read the title correctly. GZA of the Wu-Tang Clan collaborated with the Black Lips for a secret show at a venue called The Compound during SXSW this past Friday. It's kinda hard to explain this incredulous collaboration, which in theory sounds incredible, but in practice kind of falls flat. I think the following quote sums it up nicely: "Worlds are colliding!" -George Costanza "Living In The World Today" Continue reading for videos of "Shimmy Shimmy Ya", "Triumph", and "Duel of the [...]
Playing only a few tracks together, and sounding rightfully out of sync, Gza of the Wu-Tang Clan and garage punkers the Black Lips took the stage at this week's South By Southwest Festival. The footage comes courtesy of adkenc, and for being the middle of the crowd, picks up the audio very well. Gza spits [...]
The idea of GZA and Black Lips teaming up is an idea that doesn't even look that tantalizing on paper--GZA is a cold, methodical lyrical swordsman, and Black Lips are unhinged, raucuous and messy garage rockers. So it's not surprising that when the two parties got together last week at SXSW for a mercifully short performance that included "Living in the World Today" from Liquid Swords and O.D.B.'s "Shimmy Shimmy Ya" (which GZA often performs) it was a discordant mess. Black Lips looked moderately confused as to what their function was, [...]

The Black Lips' songs, especially on 200 Million Thousand , possess a nice fuzzy texture and the Atlantans appropriate great garage-isms, but I've always been less than enthused by the band, because from carefully marketing their "escape" from India to embodying every clichéd Vice signifier on earth and the "we are loose cannons" live antics, they just try too hard. Whelp, looks like they didn't try hard enough during this SXSW on-stage collaboration with GZA. Or maybe it's just that flower punks were a bit out of their comfort zone? It [...]
