The Shins are back with a new album titled Port of Morrow which will be released in March, 2012. Port of Morrow was recorded in Los Angeles and Portland over the course of 2011 with James Mercer as usual handling all songwriting duties, lead vocals and the majority of instrumentation. It's titled Port of Morrow and will hit stores March 2012 via frontman James Mercer's own label Aural Apothecary and Columbia Records. As you may know Martin Crandall (keyboard/bass) and Jesse Sandoval (drums) are gone, replaced with Ron Lewis (bass) and Modest Mouse drummer Joe Plummer, because front-man James Mercer is going for a new sound with his new tunes. The sauntering "The Rifle's Spiral," which the band performed in Oakland this week, is the second track we've heard from the newly configured Shins , and I really can't understand what necessitated a lineup change. "The Rifle's Spiral" would have fit well on Chutes Too Narrow , and it isn't the rhythmic and percussive vibe that James Mercer said was coming from the band. This is the second of that pair of new songs that the Shins are performing with their revamped lineup these days. The first was " Double Bubble ," which Mercer described to us as a new wave sort of thing; together he says "they're just a bit more rhythmic and "about the percussion" than the Shins previous incarnation. That said, "The Rifle's Spiral" doesn't sound very different from Shins past, just with chords being jabbed instead of strummed.
