FP @ SXSW 2012 It’s no secret that SXSW is no secret. What was (supposedly) once an event for industry types to rub elbows and get exclusive looks at the year’s hottest acts, has just become one damn good corporate sponsored party. While SXSW’s mainstream status may upset some, it’s still the best place to catch as much rising music (and tacos) as possible. We’ll be there, and we’ve got some great coverage planned. Below are five bands (and one film) you can count on us covering, among many others. While other sites attempt to be [...]

BADBADNOTGOOD covers That Pretty Mother Fucker

Chris Daly is prettyprettygood. And here I was thinking Tumblr was only good for Star Wars nerds, boobie aficionados and proving Drake has fucking lost it. Toronto jazz trio BADBADNOTGOOD have been using it to feed the world some oh so tasty hip hop jams. Dropping covers of J. Dilla’s “Fall in Love” and Gucci Mane’s “Lemonade,” it’s been a non-stop musical love fest for a minute now. What better way to keep the hip hop heads interested? How about a DOOM jam session featuring the "Supervillian Theme" by [...]

BADBADNOTGOOD , the group responsible for some of the best jazz covers of artists you wouldn't ever associate with jazz, are back with a nine minute rap cover assault, which sees them take on Madvillain ('Supervillian Theme'), MF DOOM ('Vomitspit') and King Geedorah 'Fazers'. They're definitely on the right end of the 'quirky cover' spectrum, with Richard Cheese being on the other end, but their work with Tyler The Creator (below) is much better than this.

Tyler went up North to TO to have a studio session with BBNG. He spits "Seven" from Goblin with the in-house band. BBNG is 3 scrawny white dudes from Toronto that Tyler is putting on real big. There sound is "NU-Jazz" and it smooth as shit. The drummer wears a Pig Head and their mixtape below is covers of classics from Gangstarr to Joy Division . Prediction: Relaxation is a key to success and BBNG will be played in lounge bars and wine parties. [...]

I was spending my night endlessly clicking around various corners of the internet the other night and managed to discover one of my best finds of recent times. I found BADBADNOTGOOD through the videos of the sessions they recorded with Tyler, The Creator and was immediately intrigued. I started to dig a little deeper and realized these guys had recorded jazz versions of some pretty amazing cover tracks and even had a mixtape with some original stuff on it. I'm a huge fan of jazz and am thrilled when I hear something that's current, as it [...]
This is sick as fuck. I knew Tyler was a producer, but I'm still fucking amazed at how he plays the keys. I grew up with a lot of kids who'd play instruments, and loved sitting in on their jam sessions. This took me back to junior year in high school. Hit the jump to see Tyler perform "Seven" with BADBADNOTGOOD .
Tyler the Creator teams up with Toronto Jazz trio Badbadnotgood for two Jam Sessions. Badbadnotgood surfaced through the internet with their Odd Future sessions Part 1 and 2 in the spring. They recently collaborated with Tyler the Creator to produce a live version of his track Seven and instrumental jam session over the track Fish . Tyler demonstrates why he is more than just an outlandish character by showing off some skills on the keys. This dude just keeps on doing cool shit. Both are embedded above. "Fuck yeah, I'm having a moment!" Tyler the Creator exclaims after getting up from behind the keyboard of another jam session with the bad boys of Bad Bad Not Good . In the words of our own Jahn P., you better fucking recognize . OFWGKTA 's gang leader is trying his hand at jazz and proving he's pretty damn good at it. Today, he and the BBNG boys covered "Fish", off OFWGKTA's album Goblin , marking the second day of the OFWGKTABBNG collaboration. Tyler the Creator x Bad Bad Not [...]

Canadian Jazz trio BadBadNotGood link up with Tyler, The Creator for this basement recording of "Seven". The master of unconventional offers a somewhat improvised but pretty damn tight rendition of the track, punctuated nicely by a dope T-Rex shirt, mic/dick slappin', and some torturous wails.
While in Toronto, Tyler decided to collab with jazz trio Badbadnotgood. The result was a mash up of Tyler's sadistic lyrics on top of a jazz foundation. Below are some covers by the trio of Tyler's original compositions.
We've posted BBNG a few times on MJF. The other night at OF's stop in Toronto Drake City , Tyler joined Matt, Alex & Chester to perform "Seven" from his first album "Bastard." For more BBNG get the Bad Bad Not Good EP . 6 covers from the talented trio ranging from Earl Sweatshirt to ATCQ. drink the kool aid:
What happens when Potholes favorites BADBADNOTGOOD collide with Tyler the Creator ? Magic. Okay, not hocus pocus shit, but a killer jazz backdrop with a dude who loves talking about killing. It's good music mixed in the cauldron with some nasty lyrics. "Seven" is off of Tyler's Bastard and probably one of the realest tracks from the album. At one point (3:23) the Odd Future frontman starts improvising as they do. It's playful or as playful as the rape, "suck my dick," fuck all speaking emcee gets. It was only a matter of time until Tyler worked [...]

A video of BADBADNOTGOOD performing with Tyler, The Creator. Y'all know I wasn't a huge fan of Tyler's last album , but playing Odd Future covers is what made BADBADNOTGOOD the internet following they currently have. Plus, "Seven" is one of my favorite songs on Tyler's album Bastard , so I've got no reason to complain. If you haven't heard BADBADNOTGOOD's latest album yet, find a review here and listen to it here .
Tyler, The Creator was in Toronto last week with his crew when he met up with Badbadnotgood to record a live session. A Toronto post-bop jazz trio, Badbadnotgood have been gaining popularity for their hip-hop covers, including arrangements for the likes of Gucci Mane and Waka Flocka. The three Humber College students bonded over their mutual dissatisfaction with traditional jazz, and out of that frustration rose their amazing hip-hop/jazz fusion project. The video for "Seven" captures these young musicians in a graffiti-marked basement with Tyler. The unhinged, purposely beaten tones of their instrumentals serve to [...]
