My lovely cousin reminded me of these guys recently and since then they have been a regular feature on my iPod. Tilly and the Wall are an indie-pop band from Nebraska who are particularly identifiable for their percussion sound, which comes from a tap dancing bandmember as opposed to a drum kit. The band- consisting of husband and wife Derek and Jamie Pressnall , Neely Jenkins , Nick White and Kianna Alarid - came together in 2001 and have since released three full-length studio albums. You may [...]

The bestest thing about birthdays are the presents. I celebrated the passing of another year just a few days ago (I'm guessing your birthday messages were lost in cyberspace somewhere?), and received the rather wonderful 'O' by Tilly & The Wall as a way of dampening the existential fear as I slowly creep closer to death... Anywho, the album is their best yet, with twelve good songs rather than the normal ratio of two great songs, four good songs and five bad ones. If you listen to Radio 1 (God help you child) then you [...]
Russell Crowe wrote a letter to the Australian government assuring them that Snoop Dogg doesn't pose a threat to the country, since Snoop wasn't going to get a visa to enter the country and get his tour on, due to his criminal record. Well, that is funny. Tilly and the Wall are back and they are really fierce! Before, they were fierce in a tapping, hand clapping kind of way. But now they're fierce like..handclaps and tapping plus swearwords and dirty guitars and bitches and hoes.

I remember two years back when listening to Tilly And The Wall was something so innocent and nostalgic. It's amazing what two years can do to a band, and their music, it's not so clean and fun now; this band is serious. With their third album (O) , they have so much more attitude and angst it's really hard to believe your actually listening to them. There's still the sing-a-longs, the fun loving, and dance-crazed toe-taps but there's just so much more layers now. It's phenomenal to listen too. They've transformed their energy of declarative exuberance in [...]
Omaha, NE's tap dancing five-piece, Tilly and The Wall will be performing on the series premiere episode of the newly revamped 90210 , airing September 2nd, 2008, on The CW. The band will be performing "Pot Kettle Black" at a character's not-so-sweet sixteen. "Pot Kettle Black" is off Tilly's latest album with no title, simply called O due to the frame on its cover. This incredible record is out now on Team Love Records and in celebration of these exciting times, Team Love [...]

This Omaha band is still in favor of step dancing for beats instead of the standard drum kit. Check out their new video from the freshly released album O . Tilly & The Wall's Pot Kettle Black: =From One, *Haute Mess*
All you tap-dance aficionados and cacophonous-music lovers, the time is nigh. So what the fuck am I talking about, you're thinking I don't know where the cranberries are or something similarly dementia-d. Well, Omaha-bred Tilly & the Wall and their indie-tap assault will be hitting Toronto's Mod Club on Aug. 2nd and our friends at ATG are hooking us up with one pair of tickets to give away. Adding to the spectacle, straight outta Auckland, kiwi's The Ruby Suns will open the show with their terrifically [...]

By now, those of you who were eager to nab Girl Talk's 300 sample-fest, Feed The Animals , have done so thanks to the latest trend: Pay What You Want. It just so happens Illegal Art (home to Girl Talk and 11 other artists) is slowly turning the trend into a label business model. By the end of July, the entire label will operate via the pay-what-you-want ideal. Will increased buzz and webtraffic cancel out those who don't pay? Will eliminating extra costs in packaging and publicity sustain smaller labels? For those asking [...]
The War on Drugs Wagonwheel Blues ( Secretly Canadian ) Wagonwheel Blues is a throwback to the days of FM radio that was dominated by the endless, classic sounds of road rock. The days when simple guitar solos and three chord melodies were enough to invoke a restless spirit to get up, get moving, and get going. It was an easy notion: as long as your car would drive and as long as you had a pocket full of gas money, you had [...]
Matt Sweeney will likely go down as a member of Zwan and as one-half of Superwolf 's kick assery before anyone acknowledges his work with Chavez (or even Skunk for that matter). Chavez happened to be lost in the shuffle of mid-90s guitar bands that weren't as crunchy as Nirvana, as mainstream as Pearl Jam, or as lo-fi as Dinosaur Jr./Sebadoh/Folk Implosion. "Unreal is Here," is not only a classic Chavez jam showcasing the band's ability to build to a blissful crescendo, but it highlights the beauty of mid-90s alterna-videos with a little grandiose humor, a pinch [...]
'Raw' is the buzzword following Ten Kens wherever they go. The Toronto four-piece, set to release their self-titled debut via FatCat September 23rd, are drawing wide comparisons and garnering praise from all angles. Listen for yourself, by streaming two new tracks via the band's MySpace page: Ten Kens - "Bear Fight" and "Y'All Come Back Now" Ten Kens combine raw vocal delivery, driving rhythms, and heavy, reverb-laden guitars with idiosyncratic song structures, creating a fresh, immediate sound. The Toronto quartet's volatile mix of bittersweet melody and [...]
Willamette Week's Musicfest NW is set to take Portland by storm. The burgeoning scene just unleashed a long list of confirmed acts, headed by Nada Surf, Vampire Weekend, TV on the Radio, M. Ward, and Steel Pole Bathtub. Seeing as the fest is $50 for four days of entertainment, Northwesterners not burnt out from Seattle's Bumbershoot may have just found themselves a bargain and a new early September ritual. As with any music festival, you can expect more artists to be added to Willamette Week's Musicfest NW as the weeks lead up to the September 3-6 [...]
We've come to the conclusion that there's a lack of great modern videos--so much so that it's getting harder and harder to have one per week. Rather than make you suffer through dry spells, we've decided on two conclusions: 1) VOTW will no longer be utilized to provide you with excellent modern music videos. When we find one, we'll give it a proper article and be done with it. 2) From now on, VOTW will be used to jog your memory on awesome music videos from the past. We promise not to do it up cheesy [...]
On the heels of the seventh avant-skewed release via Sonic Youth's SYR imprint, the group unveiled details on Andre Sider Af Sonic Youth , AKA SYR 8 . The latest SYR release features a 2005 live performance from the Roskilde Festival which included the services of Jim O'Rourke (at the time, still a member of Sonic Youth), Mats Gustaffson, and Merzbow. Merzbow shows up everywhere. If we didn't know any better, we'd think he can either teleport, time travel, or materialize at will. If you want more information, check out Sonic Youth's [...]

What hasn't been said about Ariel Pink? I don't think we can convince anyone who doesn't give two shits to go see Pink--which is sad. We frown for you naysayers but smile when we get word that Pink is traversing North America to give fans and curious on-lookers a show. 07/21 - Salt Lake City, UT @ Urban Lounge 07/22 - Denver, CO @ Larimer Lounge 07/24 - Omaha, NE @ Slowdown 07/25 - Minneapolis, MN @ 7th Street Entry 07/26 - Chicago, IL @ Empty Bottle 07/27 - Toronto, ON @ The Drake [...]
While Best Buy's latest experiment won't resemble the picture above (notice the lack of refrigerators and Guitar Hero-playing nerds), perhaps your personal record collection can. Thanks to Best Buy raking in the cash on appliances and an executive whose children collect vinyl, the conglomerate is trying its hand at moving LPs in a few stores (the exact number has yet to be released). This isn't a new experiment, as Circuit City dared--and failed--to move vinyl a mere decade ago, but that LPs sold one million units in 2007, up 15% from 2006, the temptation seemed too great for [...]
EVP will be taking a three-day weekend, so don't expect any goodies to be posted on Friday, July 4th unless something monumental is announced and we just have to get it out to you. Those of you unaware, America celebrates the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4th (though it was signed July 2nd--American logic for ya) with wasteful displays of fireworks, BBQs, and drunken debauchery--something we wouldn't miss out on no matter the circumstance. For our non-American readers, we sincerely apologize for the day off and our boisterous celebration. Please don't let it, [...]
