Disco dance act Hercules and Love Affair are set to perform a DJ set at the Record Bar on February 5. Their 2008 self-titled release on DFA was a critical success, with the Village Voice calling ... Continue reading "Incoming: Hercules and Love Affair (DJ set) at the Record Bar, February 5" >

2008 CDS by Jamie Watson 1. ONLY BY THE NIGHT by THE KINGS OF LEON OK, this is my least favorite of the 4 KOL albums, and it's still hot enough to be #1. It has the usual rockers, also ballads. (What I have always referred to as "fast then slow." or "quiet then loud.") I am now willing to say that they are nearly equal to the Afghan Whigs in my heart. There are so many similarities - the [...]
Dig this#2 It's that time of year. Blogs, magazines, websites and your idiot friends are all making their lists and checking it twice, making sure they didn't miss anything. It's the best of 2008, according to some of us, here at I wanna listen to this . Enjoy. Shannon Webb-Campbell makes some of us envious by constantly getting published and interviewing cool people. 1. FLEET FOXES Fleet Foxes [...]

Ok, let's finish this - I know I've been milking it this last week. 5. Hercules & Love Affair: Blind Of my entire 40 (41 - I really meant to include Ting Tings), this track will probably be the least controversial. It's one of those tracks that pretty much everyone agrees is magnificent. The indie heads will dig it because it's way cred. The disco bunnies love it because you can shuffle to it. It's got Antony in it. [...]
One of my favorite tracks of 2008 (entire list coming soonish). Video isn't all that good but track is so good. Get the self entitled record if you haven't. Awesome disco type stuff.

Hercules and Love Affair: Hercules & Love Affair - типичное имя для диско-группы из 70-х.
New York native Hercules and Love Affair just released their CD this Tuesday; although their CD has actually been in circulation for quite a while specially in Europe. This release kind of excites me specially cause I always wanted to learn to dance disco and lately form what I've been seeing there is a great deal of artist that are experimenting with a modified version of this genre. Hercules and Love Affair's music is electro 70s if I had to describe it, the are beautifully tied it with the voice of Antony Hegarty, lead vocalist for Antony & [...]
Besides The Saturday Knights' first full-length, Mingle , which you can stream in its entirety between the KEXP Blog and My Old Kentucky Blog ( see below ), there are plenty of other new releases this week worth squandering your money on in this downfalling economy. Beggars imprint XL has unveiled Get Damaged , an EP of songs by Be Your Own Pet that their parent label, Universal, refused to put out. Other exciting releases include the self-titled debut by Seun Kuti & Egypt 80, new long-players by Love As Laughter and The Watson Twins, a terrific album [...]
Pitchfork referred to Hercules and Love Affair as "a compelling new voice in American dance music." The act's music is so deeply rooted in club culture that with its debut release it has retreated into club's history to find what may be the next great sound. Surely disco is an influence, but is it the band's singular driving focus? Would we be ready for it if it were? Here are four reactions, four impressions, four takes on Hercules and Love Affair's Hercules and Love Affair . Pull out [...]
Release Date: 05.27.08 Already the toast of the bloggersphere, Hercules & Love Affair's eponymous debut is one of the most fawned-over releases of the year, but for all the wrong reasons, it seems. Andrew Butler, the producer/brainchild behind H&LA, has modest skills and a vast knowledge of '80s electro and Chicago house, yet not a gripping album does that alone make. By and large, his throbbing beats and organic flow are less than compelling, suffering the major pitfalls of its chosen ilk, i.e. wonky sequencing, predictable structures and a noticeable dearth of hooks. While [...]
Those three blue pictures (by Ryan Muir ) are of James Murphy deejaying Webster Hall on Friday night (the same party MSTRKRFT & Grandmaster Flash played). Stay tuned for details of James Murphy's new DFA party coming to Santos' Party House . A different DFA party happens on Tuesdays at 205. Tonight (May 20) @ 205 Tuesdays is... HORSE MEAT DISCO (The Eagle London), TYLER POPE (!!! / LCD Soundsystem), JUSTIN MILLER (DFA) & JACQUES RENAULT. To quote David [...]
Here's a couple bands/albums that might have, but shouldn't have, slipped by you. Hercules and Love Affair Hercules and Love Affair features the perfect team up of the distinctive vocals of Antony Hegarty (of Antony and the Johnsons) and DJ Andrew Butler. The album is on DFA Records. Oh, and that reminds me, as a last minute [...]

Say hello to your new favourite band... The brainchild of DJ Andy Butler, Hercules And Love Affair is Butler's multi layered and ominous brand of dark disco manifested by players as diverse as Antony Hegarty (Antony and The Johnsons), Tyler Pope (!!!), and Tim Goldsworthy of DFA. As measured and confident a debut as you'll see all year this eponymous debut boldly straddles the line between an album of "set the mood" party jams and a headphone album of 5am bliss outs. Such is the album's appeal and its core contradiction - I happened to hear tracks from [...]
A little late to getting to Hercules and Love Affair (at least by Off the Radar standards). My partner Jonathan has been spinning these guys as well as a tons of the new disco stuff for months. Keeps telling me that's 'the new thing' . We shall see. One thing's for sure Hercules and Love Affair self titled debut is pretty impressive. They have a disco sound that reminds you of the classic stuff (horns and all), but with a modern twist all their own. In particular the single 'Blind' [...]
Damaged emotion, carnal frenzies, and genuine club bangers mark an exceptional debut from Andy Butler and his myriad guests.
The producer behind Hercules & Love Affair , Andrew Butler, began DJ'ing at a leather bar as a teen in his native Denver. After a move to New York, he became further immersed in club culture as a party promoter and began to make his own music. Butler's first 12" for the DFA label, 2007's "Classique"/"Roar" -- a co-production with Tim Goldsworthy -- featured vocals from close associate Kim Ann Foxman and friend Antony Hegarty, bearing his deep affinity for electro-disco and early Chicago house. "Blind," an early 2008 follow-up, preceded a self-titled full-length released on DFA that March. [...]
