Let fighting commence. 10. The Girl And The Robot: Röyksopp feat. Robyn Baffling non-hit of 2009. It's got Robyn, it's got violins, it's got urgent futuristic synthy squiggles and lyrics about robots (see also Girls Aloud's 'beautiful robots dancing' in Untouchable). Sometimes one despairs of the public... 09. Never Turn Your Back On Mother Earth: Neko Case (fan video) [...]
The best debuts are exciting not only for what they promise, but for what they deliver, too. Think of these ten albums not as what could be, but also what already is: the best debut records of 2009. Debuts are special. Novel, gig, published poem, stage show, exhibition, album -- that first exposure of any artwork will in one sense always cast a happy shadow over its creative descendants. Debuts -- debut anythings -- are special most obviously for their creators, who experience a thrilling surreality quite like no other when they see their hitherto (and often intensely) private [...]

by Bill Pearis While this year's Mercury Prize winner Speech Debelle canceled her CMJ appearances last week due to Visa issues, one of her fellow Mercury nominees, The Invisible , have managed to get their ducks in order and will be playing three NYC shows next week: a free show at Brooklyn Bowl on Wednesday (11/4), Santos on Thursday (11/5) opening for Dragonette, and Friday (11/6) at Pianos. The Invisible were named part [...]
Tonight sees the annual awarding of the Mercury Music Prize with its now traditionally eclectic list of nominees. Following the victory of bookies' favourite Elbow last year, the judges may well plump for something a little more left field but the general consensus seems to be that the prize will go to a female artist in general and Florence Welch in particular. What do you think? To remind you here are the albums in contention, plus links to State's reviews of and features on some of the records up for consideration and video evidence of their merits. Dig those crazy [...]
The nominees for the annual Barclaycard Mercury Prize were just announced this morning across the pond. Wait, what is the Barclaycard Mercury Prize? You may have recognized it as simply the "Mercury Prize", the prestigious honor awarded to the BEST album of the year from the United Kingdom or Ireland. This year's nominees are (as always) an eclectic bunch, see them all below (arranged alphabetically, click on the band name to visit their site) along with a video and tell us who you fancy, eh? Bat For Lashes - [...]

Possibly the most exciting band emerging this year - funky soul tinged pop from an unsuspecting trio. Dave Okumu, Tom Herbert and Leo Taylor make up The Invisible and have created our very own TV On The Radio not to mention a breath of fresh air into this slightly dull period of the year. Bit of a rush unfortunately so that's all I can write. The music will speak for itself here though! The Invisible - OK - download Download audio file (The Invisible [...]

MICACHU & THE SHAPES. Played their Cologne gig last Saturday. Great concert. I especially liked their unagitatedness and...ahemm...their légère outfit. Micachu & The Shapes Lips (DL) Micachu [...]
it's no doubt been said by a lot of people before me, but I need to have my turn. these guys are next level. The Invisible Single out Monday. Album soonafter. Very sooonafter. Mr. Matthew Herbert stand up!
TV On The Radio's last album, Dear Science, was a joy to behold, a perfect blend of the experimental and the listenable. Our personal favourite was the keening, funky 'Golden Age', a song that featured more then a passing nod to a certain man called Prince . The Invisible have taken 'Golden Age' as the sonic template for an entire album (not literally, if TVOTR's lawyers are reading this) and created a joyful, expansive debut album that flits from the mesmeric single 'London Girl' to the cacophony of beats that is 'Climate [...]
