Friends, It saddens me to have to tell you of the tragic passing of Justin "Chachi" Benoit . As many of you know we lived together in my Philadelphia house, and he continued to live there until his passing. He was my friend and band member. He was a genius with impeccable taste. He loved his family, his friends, The Fall and when he would see broken umbrellas on the street. We love him and miss him dearly. Rest In Peace. Please let's be respectful of everyone's privacy to grieve. The [...]

There are a lot of little indie labels doing great things these days, but one of the most consistently impressive is What’s Your Rupture? Records based in NYC. Run by Kevin (“no big deal”) Pedersen, the label has remained defiantly independent and impeccably curated since its inception in 2003. Iceage. Cold Cave. Love Is All. Comet Gain. These are all bands that bear the What’s Your Rupture? imprimatur. When asked what makes him decide to sign certain bands, Kevin once said it’s when, “You’re sure that a song is the best thing [...]

With the release of new material, I am re-visiting the last album by Cold Cave. I thought I should share a bit of it with you. For fans of Joy Division / Ian Curtis / New Order and the many bands so inspired. I find it to be insane how many acts are capturing what was "old" music when I was a kid. By "old", I meant anything I was too young to listen to when it came out. Mind you, I was in high school 1995-1989, so even Joy Division was "old" or the older goth's music. I felt [...]

Cold Cave is the experimental synthpop vessel of Wesley Eisold, Dominick Fernow, and Jennifer Clavin. Taking cues from 80's post-punk, goth and synthpop household names such as The Cure , New Order , Joy Division , and Depeche Mode , the NYC-based band's dark outings provide an aural tour-de-force of pounding synths, muscular rhytmhs, resonant baritone vocals, atmospheric industrial beats, and post-punk vibes. Cherish The Light Years , the follow-up to the critically acclaimed Love Comes Close , comes out on April the 5th and boasts an eclectic line-up of [...]

" Love comes close But chooses to spare me Death comes close But ceases to take me I want to twist, the knife a bit deeper To siphon the love from the hearts I believed in Look outside, world is exploding, Stay inside, still never knowing. Taking cover, with each other, Sleeping off the century of hope" It was only a matter of time before the electronic pop resurgence we are currently basking in took a sharp turn for the dark and depressing. The thing about Cold Cave is, not only are they indie rock stars, but they've got pilots' licenses. Imagine that! In a lot of ways, it's surprising it took shitgaze this long to embrace the synth. On the one hand, synths never sat too well with the punk or early '90s lo-fi scenes -- shitgaze's two biggest influences -- but on the other hand there is the constant sense that shitgaze acts care more about their textures than a lot of their clean-sounding peers, and few things help with texture better than synthesizers. Nonetheless, poor...
I warmed more and more to Cold Cave 's debut LP after the initial disappointment subsided. Here is the feel goodish single that's ring out like New Order covering Q Lazzarus yup, sounds good to me. This is a rather lovely slice of synthpop from Matador-signings, Cold Cave . It's the title track from their new album. No, that is literally it. One post made from copying and pasting a link from one website to another.
My friend Art Boonparn directed this one so I thought it would be good to post. Very 80s sound. Makes me miss One Eyed Jacks on Thursday nights.

cold cave - love comes close [from pitchfork: Wesley Eisold, the man behind Philadelphia's Cold Cave, is the former frontman for hardcore bands like Some Girls, American Nightmare, and Give Up the Ghost. He was also involved in a plagiarism controversy with Pete Wentz and receives songwriting credit on a Fall Out Boy album. Not exactly the first person you'd expect to be making beautiful, experimental synthpop. Cold Cave weaves incomprehensibly distorted vocals with bits of synthetic feedback. But songs like "Love Comes Close" and "Life Magazine" also come bearing serious hooks. That mixture of postpunk unease [...]
