The now pretty much legendary band Bon Iver and its front man, Justin Vernon , were the musical guests on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday night, and if you missed it, you missed out. Lucky for you we live in the youtube generation. Although my first reaction when I watched this video was to say that this is the best performance ever to air on TV, I'll restrain myself. I'll just say that this performance of their song "Holocene" from their awesome new album Bon Iver, Bon Iver [...]
Somewhat by their own doing, Freelance Whales seem to have quite the mythologized background. They were assembled, not formed, as if if destiny brought its members together. They played in subways and abandoned farm colonies to build a fanbase, emerging from both figurative and literal depths to make a name for themselves. The result has [...]

When you interview a band that's been on the road, virtually non-stop for a year, you frequently find a musician that's burned out. Interview a band who's become a media darling and doing dozens of interviews a day and you frequently find a musician that's bored, ambivalent and tired of hearing the same questions. When I got an opportunity to talk to Doris Cellar, my experience was the complete opposite. Much like her band, Freelance Whales, she was filled with energy, passion and fun. There are some bands that are a flash in the pan and [...]
After a strangely sparse crowd the last time I was at Maxwell's, it was great to get back to the famed Hoboken venue for a completely sold out show. Kicking off the tour that night, Miniature Tigers definitely upped the attendance record. Songs off their quirky and carefree Fortress album are a bit more subdued in person, but enthralling nonetheless. Their sound is whimsical and fun, mixing acoustic strumming with marching beats and experimental synth lines. Charlie Brand was a sweet and humble front man, chatting graciously with the crowd between songs, indulging a [...]

We must have fallen asleep on this one, it's been around since april. Putting all that aside, check out this video for the outstanding Freelance Whales with 'Generator 2nd Floor'. Be sure to check out their LP 'Weathervanes' it's excellent.... Enjoy
1. Janelle Monae (Friday) Catching this lady in her ascendency is quite a coup for Electric Picnic. Her recent album The ArchAndroid is scoring well deserved rave reviews. With her trademark tuxedo and quiff, expect psychedelic funk, hip-hop, pop, even rock. Watch out for 'Tightrope', her collaboration with Big Boi, along with 'Cold War' and 'Faster'. Janelle Monáe - Tightrope [feat. Big Boi] 2. MNDR (Friday) New York's electro-pop duo MNDR, aka Amanda Warner and Pete Wade, are a late but very [...]
They may be known to a lot of people already, having been featured on Stereogum back in September. But Freelance Whales only released their debut album, Weathervanes on this side of the pond last Friday. It has been out in America for a few months now, and the hold-up is [Read more]
