During the infancy of 'indie', back when it was something that individual fans felt that they could 'be proud of', a Grammy nomination was met with astonishment and validation. However, in the post-Arcade-Fire-wins-the-nigh t-and-validates-indie era, it seems like random ass indie bands will get nominated every year, and no1 really cares, and we all already know that 'indie went mainstream'. Gonna be a weird era, but we will still see the same tweets/half-assed 'thought pieces' about 'what indie means' & other gimmicky over-analysis of 'the most coveted prize in American music.' The most stunning development of the [...]
![DEATH CAB, SUFJAN STEVENS, LYKKE LI [SUGGESTED NYC CONCERTS]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3607845_lg.jpg)
Be excited because this week might just be the best week of indie concerts in New York City in recent history. Not only is Death Cab for Cutie playing Williamsburg Waterfront, but Sufjan Stevens has two dates at Prospect Park, Lykke Li is playing Central Park, and we're putting on a show for Body Language and Port St. Willow (featuring Peter Silberman of The Antlers ) at Cameo Gallery . It's going to be an amazing week. Go see some music! [...]
WOODSMAN, TAPE DECK MOUNTAIN, HOSANNAS ( Someday Lounge , 125 NW 5th) From the first seconds of "Insects," the opening track on Woodsman's Rare Forms record, it's clear the Denver band is onto some dark magic. A heavy drumbeat that somehow both swings and sounds totally nailed to the floor, a repeating arpeggio that sounds pulled straight off Toto's "Africa," a thunderous guitar chord that reverberates fearsomely, an echoed shouted vocal that's more or less incomprehensible. From there, the rest of the record gets weirder, with sound experiments that juxtapose ambient noise against deliberately off-kilter playing. [...]
Looks like everyone in Los Angeles are still chasing the elusive secret shows around town, and one in particular is driving everyone nuts (you know who you are). In the meantime, check out the other shows going on tonight. Friendly Fires are in town tonight to play at The Roxy for a sold out show, and might be the evenings hottest ticket. Mona will be at The Echo along with L.A. locals Vanaprasta and Polls . Lucha Vavoom will be [...]

Good friend Michael over at MixxedTapes and I were chatting on the twitters the other day after I posted a little " video mixtape ", a string of youtube videos that act as a kinda mixtape for yer eyes & ears... Well, Michael got inspired and built us a sweet yet "loose" narrative. According to Michael, it goes a little something like dis... Earth is invaded by space invaders. In the wake of destruction [...]
We're going to kick off this years annual round-up with the Mahogany Best Music Video. I scoured for ages and I thought about which ones to shortlist and a pattern emerged with most of the videos that emerged this year. BUDGET LIMITATIONS. The recession hit hard in this area -- whether it be limited location or scenes, I definitely could see cutbacks. Nevertheless, there were some amazing videos from some equally amazing bands and here are our favs. People Under The Stairs -- Trippin' At The Disco [...]
Both the Friendly Fires and The XX debut albums have been consistently dominating my music playlist. As it turns out the two groups are touring together and will do a short west coast stint in the next coming weeks. I already bought my tickets to see them at the Doug Fir in Portland just in time for the Thanksgiving visit back home. They are also playing a show here in Los Angeles at the Henry Fonda Nov. 21, which I'm tempted to attend as well to get a double dosage of UK grooveness++ [...]
The Mercury Prize is a perennial British music award which affords winners a year's worth of bragging rights, a spike in media coverage and album sales, £20,000 cash and undeniable proof they're better than Radiohead . The albums shortlisted this year, released between July 2008 and July 2009 by a British or Irish artist, are certainly diverse with self-important stadium rockers (Kasabian) sitting alongside sophomore chameleons (The Horrors) and relative unknowns who live up to their name (The Invisible). Just kidding The Invisible are great. As to who will win the damn thing our money's [...]

Bat For Lashes' Two Suns , Florence & The Machine's Lungs , and the self-titled debuts from Glasvegas and La Roux are among the nominees for the Barclaycard Mercury Prize, awarded annually to the best album from the United Kingdom or Ireland. While there are some glaring omissions as always (um, Micachu????? ), digging around for videos by the nominees revealed a couple of new-to-me acts-the hip-hop artist Speech Debelle, the experimental jazz outfit Led Bib-who proved intriguing on first listen. (Oddsmakers currently have Lungs as the favorite .) The nominees, and representative videos, [...]
Was listening heaps to the Air France the past few weeks cos their second album No Way Down is so bloody beautiful. Then the horrible accident happened with the Air France flight and it became sorta eerie to listen to these tracks. Sure, this 23 minutes of laid back groove filled electronica has nothing other than a name in common with the tragedy, but it still feels a little sad somehow. I have been walking around Sydney streets listening to the second track June Evenings quietly [...]

God, this is good too. Even heavy rotation on Radios One and Six hasn't diminished its considerable charms.

We shared White Lies' new video the other day , and today we have FF's Skeleton Boy remixed by P4K/GvB favorite Air France . Friendly Fires were arguably one of the most exciting British bands to emerge last year and many people were shocked their self-titled album wasn't nominated for a Mercury Music Prize. Anyhow they're about to release their new single which has been given the single treatment by XL Recordings and it's gorgeous. The single version is punchy, funky and all other words that end in a 'y'. Friendly Fires - Skeleton Boy (The music video speaks for itself as well)
