Filed under: The Hit List , Canada 2009 was another typically diverse year for Canadian music, with standout songs running the gamut from spooky blues and booty beats to post-hardcore screamo and heart-pounding electro. Even our rap stars ranged from promoting perseverance to declaring ambivalence. But what these songs have in common is an innate greatness that should see them remain in playlists well into the next year, if not decade. Here's our list of the ten best Canadian songs of 2009. Tonight's post needs to be short and sweet, as I will be riding my new $99 mountain bike to band practice; I have managed to "convince" myself that riding a bike will completely negate the negative effects of smoking. The tune I chose for this evening continues with my efforts to place more focus on Canadian acts. Pulling on a Line can be found on the Wainfleet, Ontario indie/folk-rock band Great Lake Swimmers ' fourth studio album Lost Channels . Pulling on a Line was the first single released in support of the album in January [...]

Album: Lost Channels

Today's a Thursday, that feels like a Friday (thanks to tomorrow being Good Friday - Good? When it ends the long weekend drought those of us without a holiday in February or March have just endured, they should call it Great Friday! Or is that the kind of thing that would upset religious types? On the other hand, what doesn't upset religious types? HI-O! Ok, digression time...), and if there's anything a Friday-ish Thursday afternoon needs, it's a healthy dose of Canadian music video content. What better place to start than with some Canadian hip [...]

These guys have helped me fall asleep for years and that's a good thing. Their easy/breezy singer-songwriter stuff is so kind, so gentle, and like a bath in Calgon , it helps set your mind at ease and put your worries aside. I've never seen the Great Lake Swimmers live so I can't tell you if they'll lull you to sleep, but I'm hoping to experience their stuff in person some day. They're touring now to support the recently-released Lost Channels , an album that the New York Press says "belong to a dreamtime" (See! [...]

Toronto's Great Lake Swimmers released their new album, Lost Channels , last week on Nettwerk. The record features twelve tracks of melodic folk from the mindscapes of songwriter/frontman Tony Dekker done in rich grey tones with overcast backdrop. Played at the right time (contemplation, meditation, reflection, whatever you call it), Lost Channels , is an exquisite piece seen through a big clean spacious recording. These beautiful episodes are done up with rustic banjo tinges adding searing texture, seen most prominently on the finely sculpted piece, "The Chorus In The Underground," which stands the closest GLS get to mountain [...]

The Great Lake Swimmers kicked off the release of their new album Lost Channels with a Spring US tour on March 31 in Seattle. The Toronto band will be in fine form having spent the better part of March playing to sold out venues across their home country of Canada. Great Lake Swimmers dip down south of the 49th just as buzz for their fourth album hits a new peak. Lead single " Pulling on a Line " was recently the 2nd Most Added song at [...]

This is very good news that you hopefully have heard by now, but for the unaware, Great Lake Swimmers have a new album out tomorrow entitled Lost Channels . The record is a followup to the band's excellent 2007 release, Ongiara . The new single, "Pulling on a Line" is an extremely infectious alt-folk tune with banjo and mandolin adding a sweet touch to frontman Tony Dekker's world-weary tenor voice. You can check out the video for the song below. Keep an eye out for Great Lake Swimmers on tour in support of their new album, [...]

I promise that some substantive recs are forthcoming, but I couldn't resist sharing these headlines from the music blogosphere: Head over to My Old Kentucky Blog to hear the Killers cover the Bright Eyes song "Four Winds." I really don't know how to respond to this, because like Keith Murray, I can't mention the Killers without cracking a joke about Brandon Flowers. The cover is weird. Really weird. Also, it's been two years since Conor Oberst was Bright Eyes instead of Conor Oberst & the Mystic Valley Band. (Additional W-T-F: According to Stereogum, this [...]

Oh man. This video for "Pulling on a Line" totally looks like it could be a cut scene from Where the Wild Things Are, but with guest appearances by Peter Pan's lost boys. Lost Channels will be out March 31st, but you can use that as time to soak in this first single.
The Great Lake Swimmers' new album, Lost Channels , is dropping on 3/31 and I cannot wait. From the tracks I've heard, it sounds amazing. Enjoy, TDTD
With all the references to nature on the new Great Lake Swimmers album this video fits right in. Out in the woods, wings made of broken limbs, smoke and lamps(!). If I haven't convinced you already, Lost Channels is a fantastic album . MP3: Great Lake Swimmers - Pulling On A Line

Pretty cool little video for the new Great Lake Swimmers track Pulling On A Line . We like the imagery of the lamps in the misty forest. Pulling On A Line is taken from the new album Lost Channels due next week on the 31st. Listen to the full album now by clicking here .
