Tonight's song comes to us from the Winnipeg, Manitoba indie/folk-rock band The Weakerthans . Civil Twilight can be found on the band's fourth full-length album Reunion Tour , released in September of 2007. The album was among an impressive group of short-listed releases for the 2008 Polaris Prize , which would ultimately be awarded to Caribou 's Andorra. Though my love of The Weakerthans tends to ebb and flow, I've always felt a strong familiarity with the band's lyrics. Civil Twilight is no different, as it delves into the disgusting experience of not being [...]

The shortlist of nominees for Canada's Polaris Prize was rolled out yesterday; the winner gets a $20,000 check (Canadian, which is like $2.5 million here now, right?), , while bloggers get something to write about during the dog days of July. The nominees—other than the Weakerthans' Reunion Tour , which includes "Civil Twilight" (above)—and as many representative YouTube clips as I could find are below the cut. The Weakerthans are John Samson's baby. His matter of fact nasal vocals are lent a heft through his novelist's eye for detail and his short story writer's editing skill. If you like, or love, the sparkle of John Darnielle's lyrics you have to give The Weakerthans a good listen. Here's a video for Civil Twilight from the band's latest record on Epitaph Records , Night Windows from Reunion Tour [...]
Who needs Saturday morning cartoons anymore when you've got a high-speed connection and YouTube? The latest videos will bring you back to simpler times of lying on your livingroom floor in your pj's watching Creature Double Feature (Bloc Party), Hannah-Barbera (Tullycraft), or some strange 60s-inspired Saturday morning programming (Mum), all the while your parents wonder how they ended up in the suburban trap they find themselves in (Editors) with their two cars (!!!) and meaningless jobs (The Weakerthans). Whether you're more a kid or a grownup, you'll find much to enjoy with this week's videos: The video for [...]
I've been listening to The Weakerthan's Reunion Tour off and on for a few weeks now, and I gotta tell you, this record just makes me feel good and relaxed. Lyrically the narratives are not all full of feelings of warmth - more melancholy, yearning and disorientation really. We can all relate at times, so maybe that's what I like. Throughout the tunes though, there is a steady uplifting feeling. It's got the feel of Fall record - a season I love. [...]
