OK, I finally listened to some songs from this band Hello Seahorse!. I think I first took notice of them from their name because it was so similar to the band name Hello Saferide. Then I'd notice that it wasn't Hello Saferide, so I'd get grumpy and not ...
So, checking SXSW's lineup so far I noticed a lot of Mexican bands were playing and thought it would be fun to highlight some of them here because they probably won't get much press anywhere. First off we have the decidedly non-Spanish named group Hello Seahorse! from Mexico City. Late last year the group was signed to Portland's Magic Marker Records (home of other groups former and present like Dear Nora, BOAT, Tullycraft, and All Girl Summer Fun Band). Their bright and poppy bilingual tunes are hooky and cheery. The stand-out single [...]
By the looks of the video, Hello Seahorse could easily pass for a classic Swedish indie-pop band who record their video in the Pacific Northwest. But, no, they recorded their most excellent US debut in Mexico City, MX and a handful of songs on their album are song in Spanish. read more
Canada? Done did it. Sweden, Norway, etc.? Yeah, I'd heard they could hum a decent tune or two. Wales' Los Campesinos! don't even go to Fujiya & Miyagi-like lengths in pretending to be Spanish, but Mexico City-based Hello Seahorse! have enough low-key hooks and likable enthusiasm on "Won't Say Anything" to merit an exclamation point of their own (and maybe an upside-down one, too?). The trio of Burgos, Denise (aka Vanilla Face) and Bonno already released an album, ...And the Jellyfish Parade , south of the border a couple years ago; Portland, Ore.-based [...]

Popop

Hello Seahorse! - Won't Say Anything
Holy moly! Mexico's Hello Seahorse! have just made my week a very happy one. After watching their video for their new song, "Won't Say Anything", I am excited out of my mind to hear the rest of the new EP that Magic Marker will be bringing to us on November 11th!!! Seriously, this song has got to be one of the most infectious things I've heard in a while. The vocal melodies are so genious, and the acoustic guitar in the chorus is so tremendously catchy I just can't handle it! The video is totally fun, [...]
Hello Seahorse! - "Won't Say Anything" A thousand thanks go out to Stereogum for posting today about Hello Seahorse! . A thousand more thanks go out to local label Magik Marker for putting out Hello Seahorse!'s new record, and for consistently being so damn awesome. Everything, absolutely everything, about this -- the amazingly cute video, the hand-claps, the harmonies, the piano line, the orange T-shirt with the face on it, the Los Campesinos!-esque shouting, the boy-girl vocals, the awkward dancing -- is perfect. So perfect, [...]
Hello Seahorse!, the Mexican trio of Burgos, Denise (aka Vanilla Face), and Bonno T, mix a twee sensibility and artsy DIY visual aesthetic with unexpected instrumental interludes (lapping ocean waves, jumbled voices over piano) and spacier, darker, non-twee moments. They have a knack for writing pop songs that hit you immediately. You could think of them as a scaled down Los Campesinos! (note shared exclamation point), an even more scaled down I'm From Barcelona, or, maybe, a Sarah Records band singing in Spanish. (On a track like "Antardecer En Parapent" you'll even hear Stereolab in the vocal patterns.) HS!'s catchiest [...]
