Battles came barreling out of the indie gates in 2007 with Mirrored , a spastic debut that defied genre. Make no mistake: "Atlas", from Mirrored , will shake you to your very core. Not that Battles haven't released other noteworthy, eclectic songs since then - but oh man, "Atlas." It just rips. Battles released their latest, Gloss Drop , back in June via Warp . While Battles shrunk from four members to three since Mirrored 's release, Glass Drop still manages to [...]

I had already read a handful of reviews for Gloss Drop , the follow-up record to Battles 2007 genre-defying debut LP Mirrored, and each one said exactly what I had hoped they wouldn't - basically, that the departure of the bands vocalist, Tyondai Braxton, had affected the band so much that Gloss Drop not only lacked the inventiveness of Mirrored , but that it was a genuine disappointment. After finally listening to the record, it was hard to see exactly what those reviewers were expecting or hoping for. [...]

In 2007 Battles blew a lot of people away with the release of Mirrored . They had released a few EPs prior to that but Mirrored was a new introduction for most folks, and an amazing one at that. I went in thinking, members of Helmet and Don Caballero working together? This should be interesting . I had no idea how groundbreaking it would actually be. It took one listen to the single "Atlas" to make me realize. Take a listen now if you [...]
Filed under: News , Exclusive , New Releases Ethan Miller, Getty Images Battles are finally set to return later this year with the long-awaited follow-up to their 2007 debut, 'Mirrors.' The math-rock pioneers are set to release 'Gloss Drop' through Warp Records on June 6. The trio are also due to to play an intimate, sold-out date at London's ICA next month before returning to the UK in June to play further [...]
Have you heard the one about Tyondai Braxton leaving Battles? Well probably not because this is no joke. Due to clashes with his own solo work and the band's desires to tour along with finishing their much-antcipated second album. The official statement on the Warp Records site describes it as 'a sad but amicable split'. As much as Braxton was the closet thing Battles had to a proper front man I don't like to think this latest development will damage the quality of the band's output. If anything, John Stanier will just makes the drums even louder and [...]

(photo via P4K ) The world can be a funny place. Yesterday morning my friend Chris decided to put the always excellent "Atlas" by Battles on in my car right before I dropped him off. It was the first time in a while that I had played the song and I made a mental note to give Mirrored my attention this weekend. I went home a few hours later to see that Tyondai Braxton, the singer for Battles, had officially split from the band as of yesterday. Fuck me, right? The announcement came [...]

Just a few hours after my fifth "when the hell is the new Battles record coming out?" conversation comes the answer: No idea, but you can hear scraps of it for the first time anywhere, as the press ... Ok, to start off, I have two corrections to make. First, in the post " Atlanta Album Preview: Nomen Novum " I had listed what I believed to be a possible tracklisting to Nomen Novum 's upcoming debut album, November , but I in fact gave you the possible tracklist Nomen Novum 's second album comprised of songs they are performing live already. The tracklist for November looks like this: intro / new coke permanent makeup I collect things/pow-pow little witches don't look up my face her body [...]
Last year, I wrote this about Battles while putting their "Mirrored" album on my year-end top 10 list: Battles, "Mirrored." Prog rock too often slips into grandiose, hysterical boredom; math rock can get too, well, math-y and academic to...

So this was some sort of celebration for MySpace's 150th "Secret Show," a designation I quibble with given that they have a public website, but never mind. We arrived just after Battles had started their set. For those unfamiliar with the band, their sound is a little bit of doom electro apocalypse anarchy. Honestly, I have no idea how you would even think to write these songs, but they're brilliant. On stage, the intensity on their faces matches the relentless, frantic droning of the guitar and various noises that they're creating. They are [...]

"Tere, lapsed, täna räägime ebaõiglusest. Kuulake tähelepanelikult, see on väga oluline, sest see on teie tulevase elu põhiline märksõna." Jaa, eriti lastekaitsepäeval on igati tore meie lootusrikast tulevikku pisut hirmutada. Aga kuidas teisiti kui ebaõigluseks nimetada tõsiasja, et kui mõnest bändist jooksen ma kirjutama juba peale ühe loo kuulmist, jäävad mõned, tihti kõige paremad, hoopis väljateenitud [...]
