When I think of New York hip hop,I think of peerless wordplay and colourful and vivid story-telling. I think of razor-sharp deliveries and battle cries. Party anthems and tales of street woe. We realize that the compilers of the recent Mass Appeal: Best of Gang Starr compilation had a lot of material to choose from, but how could they have left off 1998's seemingly-everywhere-at-the-ti me single "You Know My Steez"?
