I remember being first introduced to Gang Starr by a classmate of mine back in my early high school days. At that point Gang Starr wasn't really officially releasing new material anymore, but their stuff was new to me. I was always a fan of most 90's hip hop, and how I missed the duo of Guru (rapper) and DJ Premier (producer) was beyond me. Technically, I had heard some of their tracks, but never knew who the artist was. While Gang Starr [...]

In honor of the late Gang Starr emcee, who passed this week after a lengthy cancer battle, we have collected clips of some of his greatest rhymes. "I come with mad love and plus the illest warlike tactics The wilderness is filled with this; so many people searching for false lift, I'm here with the skills you've missed The rejected stone is now the cornerstone Sort of like the master builder when I make my...

When I think of New York hip hop,I think of peerless wordplay and colourful and vivid story-telling. I think of razor-sharp deliveries and battle cries. Party anthems and tales of street woe. Very few could deliver all of the above and it's safe to say no one did with such bravado, grace and sheer ease as Guru aka the mouthpiece of iconic rap duo Gangstarr. Together with his partner, DJ Premier (an all-timer in his own right), Gangstarr were the conscience of hip-hop. Prem provided the pulpit that Guru would deliver street sermons to everyone within earshot. Never preachy. Never [...]
Guru is dead....long live Guru. I grew up with this guys music and will never forget tracks like these. Whats with the video? One of the strangest I have seen in hip hop. Lx
Keith Edward Elam aka GURU 17.07.1966 - 19.04.2010 Rest in Peace [edit] Rip Guru (Gangstarr) - Tribute Mix by Dj Mayhem on Mixcloud
Gangstarr - You Know My Steez (1997) Dir. Terry Heller Coming in at #2 is DJ Premier (birthname Christopher Martin). This guy has at least one thing in "common" with the previously mentioned producers in the Top 5 ... COMMON. Yes Premier and producers #3-5 have all worked with Common. But when he is not making beats for Common, DJ Premier is better known as one half of the Hip-Hop group Gangstarr. Guru does the rapping and Premier does the producing. Gangstarr has been around since the 80s and Premier and Guru have worked with some [...]

We realize that the compilers of the recent Mass Appeal: Best of Gang Starr compilation had a lot of material to choose from, but how could they have left off 1998's seemingly-everywhere-at-the-ti me single "You Know My Steez"? Not only was it one of the group's biggest '90s tracks, but it was accompanied by a video that pays extensive homage to George Lucas' THX 1138 , complete with row after row of fake-looking "futuristic" computers.
